A Spying Eye by Michelle Cox @suzyapbooktours @michellecox33 #bookreview #mystery #fiction

Overview

In this sixth book of the series, Clive and Henrietta return to Europe in an attempt to resurrect their failed honeymoon. While in London, they are approached by their old friend, Inspector John Hartle, who convinces them to search for the missing panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, a famous Renaissance painting, of which Hitler’s top men are also in pursuit.

Meanwhile, back in Chicago, Oldrich Exley threatens to cut off financial support for the entire Von Harmon brood if Elsie continues with her plan to marry Gunther—a situation made worse by the sudden appearance of one Heinrich Meyer, who claims to be little Anna’s father and threatens to take her away. Desperate, Elsie seeks the help of Clive’s sister, Julia, who is herself the victim of domestic abuse and who has fallen under the spell of a handsome Texas millionaire bent on acquiring a rare painting from the Howard collection.

Clive and Henrietta’s search takes them to Chateau du Freudeneck in Strasbourg, France—the ancient seat of the Von Harmons and home to three eccentric distant relatives. What begins as a wild goose chase turns decidedly more deadly when several Nazi officers also arrive at the chateau in search of a “valuable item.” When Henrietta and Clive attempt to flee after Henrietta uncovers a shocking truth, they are forced to trust themselves to a suspicious French servant who seems all-too willing to help . . .

Review

Clive and Henrietta have decided to go on a second honeymoon. Their first one was cut short and Clive is just not having it. But, this one is in danger of being a working honeymoon. Not exactly what he had in mind. Clive is approached about the missing piece to the Ghent Altarpiece. So, he and Henrietta decide to take the case!

Give me a book in which I start to do research and I am hooked. I loved learning about the Ghent Altarpiece. You can read more about it here. What a great piece of history to put in a book. And Clive and Henrietta are on the case!

Clive and Henrietta are great together. I enjoy his wit and her quickness. She can think on her feet better than any character I know. So, they make a fabulous combination. Plus, they have a great connection and definitely have each other’s backs! They are just adorable.

I have only read one of the other books in this series. You can read my review here. So, it is not necessary to have read any of the other books. They can stand on their own and I bet they are all as enjoyable as this one!

The Rising Tide by Anne Cleeves @macmillanaudio #audiblebook #audiobook #bookreview

Overview

From Ann Cleeves—New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of the Vera and Shetlandseries, both of which are hit TV shows—comes the stunning tenth Vera Stanhope audiobook, The Rising Tide, a powerful story about guilt, betrayal, and the longheld secrets people keep.

“Ann Cleeves is one of my favorite mystery writers.”—Louise Penny

For fifty years a group of friends have been meeting regularly for reunions on Holy Island, celebrating the school trip where they met, and the friend that they lost to the rising causeway tide five years later. Now, when one of them is found hanged, Vera is called in. Learning that the dead man had recently been fired after misconduct allegations, Vera knows she must discover what the friends are hiding, and whether the events of many years before could have led to murder then, and now . . .

But with the tide rising, secrets long-hidden are finding their way to the surface, and Vera and the team may find themselves in more danger than they could have believed possible . . .

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Review

There has been a murder. Vera is called in to investigate. But, it is not as cut and dried as she first thought. The evidence keeps leading her back to a night 50 years ago. The night a group of friends meet for their regular evening on Holy Island. But, someone died that night as well! Can Vera unravel all the deceptions and solve this case?

As most of y’all know, I do not write bad reviews. It is hard work to write a book. So, I try not to damage an author’s hard work based on my opinion. But, this author is just not for me. This is the 3rd book by her that I have read and I am just not a fan.

This story just went on and on. It has quite a few characters and it just seemed to be stuck in the middle for a while and never went anywhere. And for the life of me, I do not know why I did not DNF. I guess, I kept hoping there would be a twist..nope!

The narrator, Janine Birkett, did a good job with what she had to work with. She is probably the reason I completed this book

The Mother I Never Had by Gary Goldstein #fiction #bookreview @suzyapbooktours

Overview

It’s tough enough for L.A. landscape designer Nate Cronin when his professor father, Jim, who raised him alone since birth, dies, leaving Nate an orphan at thirty years old. But when the provocative and mysterious Amy enters Nate’s life soon after, it sends him on a devastating journey to unravel the truth about his past, the veracity of Amy’s claims, and the history of the father he adored.

At the same time, Nate must come to terms with his commitment to his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer, a dance instructor whose patience with the resistant Nate frays as she attempts to help him navigate the psychological minefield set off by Amy’s arrival.

The Mother I Never Had asks readers to consider what they would do if they found themselves faced with a parent they never knew existed—and if they could accept the secrets and lies that kept her away for a lifetime.

Review

Nate’s father has passed away. Nate is in the process of getting on with his life and dealing with his father’s things, when a lady, Amy, enters his life. And it is not the way you think…it is a secret his dad kept hidden from Nate. And Nate does not quite know what to do with this information. He is reeling!

I enjoyed Nate. I felt he could be more of…something…but he is down to earth and just an overall nice guy. But, and this is just a bit weird, Nate never calls his dad, Dad. He calls him Jim, even in his thoughts or when he is talking about him. This creates a bit of distance between these two characters in the mind of the reader. Which is probably the author’s intent. It just caught my attention.

This novel had me an emotional wreck in places. One minute I am just coming along and the next minute…BOOM! I am teary eyed! Boy! Secrets can cause a multitude of damage and regret.

The Winter Guest by W. C. Ryan #mystery #audiobook @dreamscapeaudio

Overview

January 1921. Though the Great War is over, in Ireland a new civil war is raging. The once-grand Kilcolgan House, a crumbling bastion shrouded in sea mist, lies half empty and filled with ghosts, both real and imagined, while it shelters the surviving members of the Prendeville family. Then, when an IRA ambush goes terribly wrong, Maud Prendeville, Lord Kilcolgan’s eldest daughter, is killed, leaving the family reeling. Yet the IRA column behind the attack insists they left her alive, that someone else must be responsible for her terrible fate. Captain Tom Harkin, an IRA intelligence officer and Maud’s former fiancé, is sent to investigate. He becomes an unwelcome guest in this strange, gloomy household.

Working undercover, Harkin must delve into the house’s secrets—and discover where, in this fractured, embattled town, allegiances truly lie. But Harkin too is haunted by the ghosts of the past and by his terrible experiences on the battlefields. Can he find the truth about Maud’s death before the past—and his strange, unnerving surroundings—overwhelm him?

Review

Maud has been found dead. The family is leaving no stone unturned. They have even called in her old lover, Tom Harkin, to help them decipher all the evidence.

Tom is a character I enjoyed. He is just matter of fact until the situation demands more…then he is unstoppable! I loved how he felt about the situation. His heart is broken but that is not going to stop him from doing his job and finding out what happened to Maud.

This book started out so strong. But the further I got into the story the more characters introduced…just sort of lost gusto. But, it kept me entertained enough to keep going. I did want to know more about the house and the history. But the mystery of who did what to whom…quite a good guessing game!

Liam Hourican is the narrator. He did a very good job with all the characters and his tone fit every situation.

A Place to Land by Laura K. Denton #audiobook #audiblebook #fiction @harpermusebooks

Overview

Violet Figg and her sister Trudy have lived a quiet life in Sugar Bend, Alabama, since a night forty years ago that stole Trudy’s voice and cemented Violet’s role as her sister’s fierce and loyal protector. Now Trudy spends her days making sculptures from found objects and speaking through notes written on scraps of paper, while Violet runs their art shop, monitors bird activity up and down the water, and tries not to think of the one great love she gave up to keep her sister safe.

Eighteen-year-old Maya knows where everyone else belongs, but she’s been searching for her own place since her grandmother died seven years ago. Moving in and out of strangers’ houses has left her exhausted. After seeing a flyer on a gas station window for a place called Sugar Bend, Maya chooses to follow the strange pull she feels and finds herself on the doorstep of an art shop called Two Sisters.

When a boat rises to the surface of Little River in the middle of the night, the present and no-longer-buried past collide, and the future becomes uncertain for Maya, Violet, and Trudy. As history creeps continuously closer to the present and old secrets come to light, the sisters must decide to face the truth of what happened that night forty years ago, or risk losing each other and those they’ve come to love.

Review

Violet and Trudy have a secret. They are living a quiet life in Sugar Bend, AL. But, things are changing. A boat has been found, a bracelet has turned up, and there is a missing person still missing. Can they ride out this storm?!

First off, I loved the setting of this book. We have visited the Alabama coast numerous times and I enjoyed reading about this area. It is almost feels like home!

I also adored Trudy and Violet. They have a unique bond and believe me, Violet is not going to let anything break it. Then, there is Maya. She is a lost, young lady just looking for a place to call her own. These ladies step up and take her in.

But, there is the secret…what part of the past are Violet and Trudy not sharing? I figured it out, as will any of the readers. But, the way it plays out is intense and really kept me locked into the story!

Brittany Presley is the narrator. And I adored her! All her voices were spot on and her intensity was definitely on target!

Overview

But when a schoolgirl vanishes and her backpack is found in a sex offender’s backseat, the weary lawman drags himself into action and vows to nail one last sociopath.

But as the desperate cop frantically hunts down a mysterious relative in search of a suspect, the girl’s time keeps ticking away…

Can the jaded sheriff take down the culprit in time to bring the young girl home alive?

Review

Sheriff Jax has a missing girl in his town. The more he follows the leads the more convoluted the case becomes. Then the case twists again. Could it be possible? Is it tied to one of his very first missing persons’ crimes?

I fell for Jax right away. As a matter of fact, I fell for most of these characters. Some are broken, like Jax. And some are so real, they live in my town…I just know them.

I also enjoyed the hunt in this one! I did figure it out and there are a lot of coincidences which led to me figuring out who did what. But, with the characters and the chase, it is a pretty dang good mystery.

This is the first book in the Misty Pines series. I will definitely be on the look out for the others in this series. There is a backstory which is bound to be revealed and I want to know more!

The Color of Ice by Barbara Linn Probst @suzyapbooktours #bookreview #fiction

Overview

Exquisite” (Lisa Barr, New York Times best-selling author of Woman on Fire) and “utterly engrossing” (Katherine Gray, cohost of the Netflix series Blown Away), The Color of Ice will wrap you in its spell, all the way to its unforgettable ending.

Set among the glaciers and thermal lagoons of Iceland, and framed by the magical art of glassblowing, The Color of Ice is the breathtaking story of a woman’s awakening to passion, beauty, and the redemptive power of unconditional love.

The stunning new novel by the author of award-winning novels Queen of the Owls and The Sound Between the Notes . . .

Cathryn McAllister, a freelance photographer, travels to Iceland for a photo shoot with an enigmatic artist who wants to capture the country’s iconic blue icebergs in glass. Her plan is to head out, when the job is done, on a carefully curated “best of Iceland” solo vacation. Widowed young, Cathryn has raised two children while achieving professional success. If the price of that efficiency has been the dimming of her fire—well, she hasn’t let herself think about it. Until now.

Bit by bit, Cathryn abandons her itinerary to remain with Mack, the glassblower, who awakens a hunger for all the things she’s told herself she doesn’t need anymore. Passion. Vulnerability. Risk. Cathryn finds herself torn between the life—and self—she’s come to know and the new world Mack offers. Commitments await her back in America. But if she walks away, she’ll lose this chance to feel deeply again. Just when her path seems clear, she’s faced with a shocking discovery—and a devastating choice that shows her what love really is.

Review

Cathryn has been asked to travel to Iceland to photograph a very talented glass blower. She decides to turn this trip into a much needed vacation. But, as we all know, life throws us curve balls.

I loved Cathryn from the start. She has been just existing in her life for a while. So, she has decided to do for her and this vacation is sort of a life changing decision. Then she meets Mack, the glass blower, and sparks do not fly. Their connection smolders and slowly grows into an undeniable bond.

Now, at first, I was not a big fan of Mack. I found him borderline rude. But, his gruffness grew in me. And his talent is something else! I loved learning about the glass blowing process. I figured this would be a boring part of the book. But, this author is powerful in her descriptions.

This was very close to a 5 star read for me. The plot is just a little thin. But my word, the scenery and the prose! It just keeps you coming back for more! I fell for Iceland and much as I did this story. It is now in my bucket list!

Built to Last by Erin Hahn #romance #fiction #bookreview @stmartinspress

Overview

“I loved this delightful romance about makeovers of old homes, old personas, and relationships that never had a chance to launch. A sweet, charming reminder of what you can build with a strong foundation.” – Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Two Ways

Erin Hahn’s Built to Last is a sparkling second chance romance about owning what you’re worth and fighting for the one who got away.

Shelby Springfield has spent the last ten years trying to overcome her past, sanding it away like she does the rough spots on the vintage furniture finds she makes over. But as a former child star, it’s hard to forget a mediocre pop career, a meltdown widely documented by the paparazzi, and a huge public break with her former co-star Lyle Jessup. It’s also hard to forget her other co-star and childhood sweetheart, Cameron Riggs—the one who got away.

Anytime Shelby has called, Cameron has come running… And then he runs right off again to chase stories around the world by making documentaries, too scared to admit what he really wants. But when Lyle stirs the pot, getting the two back in the spotlight with a home renovation show, Cameron can’t help but come on board.

There’s something in it for everyone—almost. Cameron wants to come home and set down some roots. Shelby wants to prove to the world she’s not the messy party girl anymore. And Lyle wants to twist the screws on his two childhood friends who had more chemistry than he could dream of with anyone. Sparks and sawdust fly as Shelby and Cameron film the pilot for “Homemade” and battle Lyle’s shenanigans at every turn.

Review

Shelby has decided to leave the Hollywood scene. She has been dumped by her long time boyfriend, Lyle and she is just over all the drama. She calls her old friend Cameron. He comes running to Shelby’s side. But, then Lyle decides to create some havoc and interfere.

At first, I was not real sure I was going to like Shelby. She came across as insincere and superficial. But after she left Hollywood and became a woodworker and a carpenter, I found her very charming. As for Cameron, he is just an all around good guy. You can’t help but fall for him. He has excellent magnetism!!!

I enjoyed the history between Shelby and Cameron. The connection between these two really made the story…plus their hate for Lyle. Lyle is something else…I just wanted to smack him!
