Sex Hell by Joe Canzano  AUTHOR INTERVIEW.

Genre: Comic Fantasy

Book Description

When Debbie de La Fontaine tries to spice up her love life by supernaturally tampering with her sex life, she is cursed to spend every future encounter in a magical place called “Sex Hell,” where the sex is ludicrous and amazing but the romance is scarce.

Her only chance for escape is through the stingy clues supplied by an obnoxious demon, and the only way to obtain the clues is by returning to Sex Hell again and again to have outrageous sexcapades with the man she most wants to avoid—or does she?

Sex Hell is an absurd comic fantasy about the confusion of relationships. How is love related to sex, and how is sex related to love—and do love and sex need to be related at all?

*This book contains profanity and adult situations*

Interview

Who or what inspires you the most?

Wile E. Coyote. He never gives up, regardless of how many times a big rock falls on his head.

2. Dan Brown needs his gravity boots. Susan Elizabeth Phillips has to take off her bra. What do you need to do to write?

Nothing special. I just need to sit my butt down in a chair and get started. I need to turn off The Walking Dead or whatever and get to it.

3. Have you ever written anything except fantasy? If so, what and why?

I write comedy that happens to have fantasy elements. I also write sci-fi that has comic elements. I’ve written other things but the tone is always comic.

4. How do you do your research? Mostly Internet or travel?

The internet is great but I tend to write about places I’ve visited (usually many times), so I guess you could say travel, too. I think my best ideas are places that don’t actually exist – like Sex Hell. I’ve never been there.

5. What is the most interesting encounter you have had with one of your readers?

Usually, the most interesting encounters involve people who think the characters in the books are based on real people – and they don’t believe me when I tell them they are not. They think I’m either lying or I just don’t realize it.

REVIEW

I only had to read one story from this anthology to do my review. I read The Light we Found. However, being the rebel I am, I also read several more. So, this is going to be a review about the three I read.

These stories are about strength to overcome obstacles life throws at you. The strength of family to get through these trials comes out in each of these novellas.

Family is the true backbone of these tales. And the mother is at the heart of every one. I loved the medley of stories and how each one was different with the basic premise, family is everything.

Everyone of us in this world faces life and it’s challenges  differently. It is tough to face these by ourselves. These novellas show the true meaning of family and the diversity to withstand all!

I enjoyed these so much, I cannot wait to delve into the other tales. Highly recommend!

A Lowcountry Wedding by Mary Alice Monroe #XOXperts

OVERVIEW

Wedding season has arrived in New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe’s next novel in the “distinct, complex, and endearing” (Charleston Magazine) Lowcountry Summer series, set against the romantic, charming Charleston Lowcountry.

Nothing could be more enchanting than a summer wedding—or two!—in Charleston’s fabled lowcountry. A centuries-old plantation, an avenue of ancient oaks dripping moss, a storied ballroom, a sand dune at sunset…

Yet when a stranger arrives, a long held family secret could silence the bells ringing for the Muir sisters. Scandals surface, family bonds are questioned, and promises are broken and renewed. In A Lowcountry Wedding Monroe delves into the heart of marriage, commitment, and family ties. Huffington Post calls the Lowcountry Summer series “the perfect beach read and a whole lot more.”

REVIEW

It is wedding season in Charleston and the Lowcountry. And boy, is it a treat. A wonderful beach or a fascinating old plantation….decisions, decisions, decisions.

These three half sisters, Carson, Harper and Dora, meld so well together and infuse the story with such charm and grace. The complexities of each character and their relationships seem to compliment and bring diversity to this novel. I was enraptured with where this story was going and where it ended. I so hope there is another novel in this series. This was like visiting with old friends.

I do not want to give away a spoiler. Let’s just say, Carson and Harper are coveting each other’s wedding. This brings on some classic turmoil and squabbles, like you can only see in a family. But, it also brings the sisters closer to  each other and strengthens their family bond.

I fell in love with this series in the first book, The Summer Girls.  I love the setting of the Lowcountry.  I feel like I am there, experiencing the wildlife, the smells and the view.

To say Mary Alice Monroe does a fantastic job is an understatement. I can relate to each sister and I so want to go visit the Lowcountry. I just want to crawl inside this series and live!

I received this novel as part of Simon and Schusters XOXPERTS.

The House by the Lake by Ella Carey

OVERVIEW

Anna is content with her well-ordered life in San Francisco. But her world is turned upside down when her beloved grandfather, Max, reveals a startling secret: Anna is part of an aristocratic family who lost everything during World War II. What’s more, Max was forced to leave behind a precious item over seventy years ago in their estate in old Prussia. It’s now his ardent wish that Anna retrieve it.

Anna burns with questions as she heads for Germany: What memento could be so important to her grandfather? And why did he keep their history hidden? As she searches for answers, she finds herself drawn to Wil, a man who may hold the key to unlock the mystery. Together they discover that her family’s secrets are linked with an abandoned apartment in Paris, and these secrets go deeper than she ever imagined.

Alternating between 1930s Europe and the present, The House by the Lake illuminates the destiny of a family caught in the tumult of history.

REVIEW

Anna’s grandfather asks her to go to Germany and retrieve something from his childhood home. She has a very cool reception from the town. Come to find out, her grandfather may not be the person she thought.

This story kept me reading late into the night and thinking about it during the day at work!!! GASP!! I could visualize the house in Germany and I so wanted to be there. And to know the story is loosely based on a real house made it all the more intriguing.

The characters kept me coming back for more. I loved Anna from the start. When she met Wil….that just took me over the edge. I could just picture them exploring the house working together to overcome the obstacles ahead.

The ending is a little too tidy for me. Anna needs to struggle a little more to find out what happened to her grandfather during WWWII. Instead she finds out in one visit with someone. It would have added a lot to the tale if she had more of an adventure to figure out the mystery. But…..this is just a minor observation and completely my opinion.

I loved, loved, loved this book. The mystery, the house, the setting, the characters all meld together to make a tale I could not stop thinking about.

The Old World – By the Hands of Men Book #1 by Roy M. Griffis

Overview

Lieutenant Robert Fitzgerald has managed to retain his sanity, his humanity, and his honor during the hell of WWI’s trench warfare. Charlotte Braninov fled the shifting storm of the impending Russian Revolution for the less-threatening world of field camp medicine, serving as a nurse in the most hopeless of fronts. Their friendship creates a sanctuary both could cling to in the most desperate of times. Historical fiction about life, loss, and love, By the Hands of Men explores the power that lies within each of us to harm – or to heal – all those we touch.

Review

Charlotte is a nurse in WWI. She experiences all the tragedy and the horrors of war. And then her “knight”, as she likes to refer to him, helps her through a horrible experience.  Their love grows….until….

I love the time period of this story. I have not read many novels set in WWI so, this was a real treat. I enjoyed reading  about the hospital and the aid station. The struggles of the men and the women to overcome all obstacles to save a life are really amazing to read and the author did a fabulous job expressing this.

Anna is a strong woman character and I love those. She is hard working, even though she is a Russian aristocrat. She and Robert have a remarkable connection right from the start. Then something…and I will not reveal a spoiler… happens and leaves them estranged.  I cannot wait to read the second book in this series. I must know how everything turns out.

There are a few places in the story where I wanted to know more. There should have been more. Then there are places the author expounds and it is not relevant to the story. However, the ending is perfect. A great lead in to the next in the series.

I received this novel from the author for a honest review.

Blurb:

Dead or alive. Good or evil. Hero or fugitive.

Valo needs a specific solution to a grave problem. The human Claimfold and prigon Torzsi draw apart. War is promised in the West. Worst of all, the magi of Nagyevo are meddling with the dead.

Perin is an apprentice Gravedigger: uneducated, unwanted, unsure. He may be the answer Valo needs, if he doesn’t get killed before he works out what’s going on. But of course there’s the chance that fate hasn’t called him after all. The gods are nameless and silent and the best laid plans have a way of going badly wrong.

Enter the spade and sorcery world of Valo.

Gravedigger subverts the expectations of that oldest of foes in fantasy, the dead that walk, in a fast-paced adventure through a world of culture, intrigue, magic and blood.

Endorsements:

“His storytelling is impeccable. I have no doubt Gravedigger only scratches the surface of what he has in store for us.” —Tom Barczak, author of the Prophecy of the Evarun series of fantasy novels.

“Masterful world-building from a rising talent – Perin is the most iconic fantasy protagonist since Bilbo Baggins.” – J. G. Clay, author of Tales of Blood and Sulphur
