Jennie is working as a runner in the Diamond District when a friend’s sudden death leaves her with a cryptic note: “Not Safe.” Her search for answers leads her to an antique jewelry box, a clue to a century-old mystery and the legend of the Midnight Diamond—a rare blue gem rumored to bring ruin to all who possess it.
This is told in two different voices, Jennie and Marcella. And in two different timelines, 2010 and 1910. I loved them both.
Jennie in 2010 is struggling to find out what happened to her friend. And Marcella in 1910 is just struggling since the loss of her family’s fortune…all because of a diamond. Is it cursed? Did it cause Marcella’s downfall? Is it the reason Jennie’s friend died? All of these questions surround this diamond and will keep you fascinated with what is going to happen next.
I love a book that has historical mysteries. This story started out so strong. I was captivated! However, it did slow down a bit in the middle. Or rather, it became a bit monotonous. But don’t worry…it picks up again and takes you through multiple twists!
