The Witness by Terry Lynn Thomas @suzyapbooktours @tlthomasbooks #fiction #review

About The Book:

HE SAW WHAT YOU DID…

Teenager Ebby Engstrom witnesses a murder – and then passes out. The next morning, he wakes in his bed with no memory of how he got there, and is told his mother was stabbed to death the previous night.

Thirty years later, the case has gone cold, with numerous suspects but no new clues – until Ebby starts having uncontrollable flashbacks to that night. As repressed memories surface, he questions his own role in the murder, leading to a dramatic confession and Ebby’s arrest.

Family friend and attorney Olivia Sinclair is convinced of Ebby’s innocence, but the only way to clear his name is to find the real killer herself. And it seems almost everyone connected to the Engstrom family had a reason to want Cynthia dead…

An unputdownable thriller full of suspense, perfect for fans of Gillian McAllister, Alafair Burke and The Good Fight.

Review

Ebby is a successful restaurant owner. He has begun having terrible flashbacks. They are so terrifying that he completely blacks out. The flashbacks include the murder of his mother, which happened 30 years ago. Ebby thinks he did it. He enlists a family friend, Olivia, to help solve his mother’s murder and to pull him back to the present.

Terry Lynn Thomas has woven a unique tale. With all these twists and turns, she kept me guessing until the end. And her characters are spot on. I love Olivia. She is smart and takes no prisoners. Plus, my heart goes out to Ebby. He was just a child when this occurred. So, you can just imagine his pain and trauma.

Need a good legal mystery which keeps you guessing…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!

Far Gone By Danielle Girard @suzyapbooktours @danielle1girard #thriller #fiction #bookreview

About The Book:

From the USA Today bestselling author of White Out comes a story of two heroines with shattered pasts and a town with blood on its hands.

When a North Dakota couple is shot down in their home in cold blood, the sleepy town of Hagen wakes with a jolt. After all, it’s usually such a peaceful place. But Detective Kylie Milliard knows better.

Despite not handling a homicide investigation in years, Kylie is on the case. A drop of blood found at the scene at first blush promises to be her best evidence. But it ultimately only proves that someone else witnessed the murder—and the results are shocking: the DNA reveals a familial match to a crime involving local nurse Lily Baker from over a decade ago. This unveiling stirs new nightmares for Lily as she’s forced to reckon with the most traumatic time in her life.

Haunted by their pasts and hunting the killer, Kylie and Lily uncover hellish secrets and impossible truths, finding answers that put both their lives in jeopardy.

Review

A local couple has been murdered in their home and their baby is missing. A spot of blood at the crime scene is found related to another case. It is a match to past victim. Kylie is now determined to discover the truth about both cases.

This story had me enthralled from the start! Talk about intense. I fell for the characters, especially Hannah.

Hannah is a young teenager in trouble. She is doing drugs and she just witnessed a double murder. And now the killer is after her. Kylie is the local cop investigating these double murders. The blood droplet at the crime scene leads to Lily, a local nurse. What all three of these ladies have in common…you will have to read the story to find out. And trust me…you will be glad you did!

I am definitely going to pick up the first book in this series. Heck, I am adding all of this author’s book to my tbr list.

Need a fast paced thriller that just won’t quit…THIS IS IT!

About the Author

When Emmy read the best series of her childhood, Nancy Drew, she cheered for her favorite titian- haired detective to solve the mysteries that plagued River Heights while reading the books featuring Nancy’s boyfriend Ned Nickerson over and over again. Fast forward a few years later to when Emmy found a copy of A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss, and she was hooked on romance. Thirteen years after she submitted her first novel, and received her first rejection, from Harlequin, Emmy got the call from editors Flo and Charlotte with Harlequin Presents.

Excerpt

His Billion Dollar Takeover Temptation- Excerpt
Emmy Grayson
A skintight orange gown enhanced Jackie’s slender figure, including the generous amount of cleavage that threatened to burst free at any second. Dark curls fell in an artfully arranged waterfall over her shoulder, accentuating sharp cheekbones and a large, blindingly white smile any model would envy.
But, other than the vaguest stirring of a physical response to her amply displayed breasts, he felt nothing. After years of entertaining himself with models, politicians, business leaders and actresses, he was very selective in his choice of bedmate. Married women and overly attentive ladies who wore their greed on their sleeves topped his off-limits list.
“I’d love to know more about your winery.” She smiled again and pressed her breasts flush against him.
The move jostled his arm. Ruby-red wine sloshed out of his glass onto the white cuff of his dress shirt. His mild irritation flared into icy displeasure.
“Oh, no! I’m so sorry…” Her voice trailed off as their eyes met. “Um… I’ll just let you get cleaned up.”
She scuttled down the length of the balcony and hurried down the stairs. He watched as she reached the ballroom floor and disappeared into a sea of evening gowns and tuxedos.
A glance down at his shirt made him sigh. He had plenty of dress shirts in his closet upstairs in the Roosevelt Penthouse Suite. It would only take ten minutes to change and rejoin the party. But the deviation to his routine annoyed him. He always spent the first half-hour of a wine release alone, surveying whatever grand room his event planner had booked and savoring the success that had brought him to this moment.
From evaluating the mineral levels in the soils of the vineyards to collaborating with his head of marketing on the international campaigns that had taken Cabrera Wine to the top of the industry, each wine release marked the end of a long, demanding journey.
As a Cabrera, he could have asked for much more by way of reward. All he wanted was thirty minutes to himself.
She’s gone. Focus on the party. Don’t let her ruin your night.
Tiffany chandeliers cast a sparkle over the golden ceiling as partygoers milled about the ballroom. Waiters expertly danced in and out of the guests with silver trays full of culinary treats like brie-stuffed mini burgers and pork chop bites with a tangy orange barbeque sauce.
Adrian’s blood had curdled when Cabrera Wine’s event planner, Calandra Smythe, had read the menu to him. Did Americans have to put barbeque sauce on everything?
Yesterday’s final tasting had altered his view somewhat, when he’d been forced to admit that the unique recipes brought out the velvety flavors of the Merlot. And the surprisingly tasty offerings had been a hit with both his American and international clients.

Down below, he watched Calandra flit through the crowd, her eagle eyes seeking out every tiny imperfection with laser precision. From relighting candles to adjusting the angle of the tall vases overflowing with Spanish bluebells and white carnations, she had everything under control. As always.
He’d started to turn back to the arched window, to pull the curtain aside and take just a moment longer to enjoy the sight of the skyline, when he caught sight of a woman gliding in and out of the hordes of people. Her confident, graceful movements, coupled with the tumble of blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, piqued his interest. Elegant, yes, but something about her seemed out of place compared to the stiff-necked men and women milling about.
The crowd broke for a moment. He could see her below him, illuminated by the golden light of the chandeliers and the glow of the hundreds of candles that lit the ballroom. Her head snapped up and their gazes collided, caught and held.

A Distant Grave by Sarah Stewart Taylor #audiblebook #audible #audiobook

Overview

In the follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Mountains Wild, Detective Maggie D’arcy tackles another intricate case that bridges Long Island and Ireland in A Distant Grave.

Long Island homicide detective Maggie D’arcy and her teenage daughter, Lilly, are still recovering from the events of last fall when a strange new case demands Maggie’s attention. The body of an unidentified Irish national turns up in a wealthy Long Island beach community, and with little to go on but the scars on his back, Maggie once again teams up with Garda detectives in Ireland to find out who the man was and what he was doing on Long Island. The strands of the mystery take Maggie to a quiet village in rural County Clare that’s full of secrets and introduce her to the world of humanitarian aid workers half a world away. And as she gets closer to the truth about the murder, what she learns leads her back to her home turf and into range of a dangerous and determined killer who will do anything to keep the victim’s story hidden forever.

With the lyrical prose, deeply drawn characters, and atmospheric setting that put The Mountains Wild on multiple best of the year lists, Sarah Stewart Taylor delivers another gripping mystery novel about family, survival, and the meaning of home.

Review

Maggie has been called into a case. A murder has occurred and the victim is an Irish national. Maggie and her daughter are supposed to leave for Ireland for vacation. So, Maggie decides to do a little investigation while she is there. But this murder turns into more than she bargained for.

Ok…I really struggled with this read. I try hard not to write bad reviews. But this book just did not cut it. The story moved slowly but I believe most of the problem is with the narrator, Marisa Calin. She is very breathy, overly dramatic and her accents were atrocious. There were times I actually rolled my eyes.

The only thing that kept me listening was the mystery. But to be honest…I only vaguely cared about that.

Please forgive the bad review…I just hate to write them. The author spent a lot of time on this book and this is just one person’s opinion.

The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel @kristinharmel @gallerybooks #5starread #historicalfiction #review

Overview

Indie Next List pick for July 2021 * Parade “Best Books of Summer” pick * Real Simple summer reading pick * SheReads “Best WWII Fiction of Summer 2021” pick

The New York Times bestselling author of the “heart-stopping tale of survival and heroism” (PeopleThe Book of Lost Names returns with an evocative coming-of-age World War II story about a young woman who uses her knowledge of the wilderness to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis—until a secret from her past threatens everything.

After being stolen from her wealthy German parents and raised in the unforgiving wilderness of eastern Europe, a young woman finds herself alone in 1941 after her kidnapper dies. Her solitary existence is interrupted, however, when she happens upon a group of Jews fleeing the Nazi terror. Stunned to learn what’s happening in the outside world, she vows to teach the group all she can about surviving in the forest—and in turn, they teach her some surprising lessons about opening her heart after years of isolation. But when she is betrayed and escapes into a German-occupied village, her past and present come together in a shocking collision that could change everything.

Inspired by incredible true stories of survival against staggering odds, and suffused with the journey-from-the-wilderness elements that made Where the Crawdads Sing a worldwide phenomenon, The Forest of Vanishing Stars is a heart-wrenching and suspenseful novel from the #1 internationally bestselling author whose writing has been hailed as “sweeping and magnificent” (Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author), “immersive and evocative” (Publishers Weekly), and “gripping” (Tampa Bay Times).

Review

Yona was stolen from her rich, German parents when she was just 2 years old. She was raised by an old woman in the forest. She learned how to survive and how to hide. So when she encounters some Jews who have escaped the ghetto, she does everything in her power to save their lives, including contacting her real father.

Yona is a character I adore. She is tough and has a big heart. She struggles to overcome her fear of people and of situations she has never experienced to keep everyone safe. Even though so much is out of her control, this does not stop her.

This is a a bit of a new take on WWII for me…and I have read them all! I have read a few stories about people living in the forest. But, I have not read one as detailed and as interesting as this one. I was completely captivated by the setting, the intensity and the characters!

The Stranger in the Mirror by Liv Constantine @suzyapbooktours @livconstatine2 #fiction #5starread

About The Book:

A diabolically twisty, psychologically unsettling novel about a woman with no recollection of her past.

Addison’s about to get married, but she’s not looking forward to the big day. It’s not her fiancé; he’s a wonderful man. It’s because Addison doesn’t know who she really is. A few years ago, a kind driver found her bleeding next to a New Jersey highway and rescued her. While her physical wounds healed, Addison’s memory never returned. She doesn’t know her real name. Or how she ended up injured on the side of a road. Or why she can’t shake the notion that she may have done something very, very bad . . .

In a posh home in the Boston suburbs, Julian tries to figure out what happened to his loving, caring wife, Cassandra, who disappeared without a trace two years ago. She would never have left him and their seven-year-old daughter Valentina of her own free will—or would she?

As these two lives intersect, The Stranger in the Mirror hooks readers with riveting drama, told with Liv Constantine’s hallmark blend of glamour, tense psychological thrills, and jaw-dropping twists

Review

Addison is picked up by a truck driver. She is confused, lost and hurt. She has no idea who she is or where she has come from. She ends up in Pennsylvania with a new life. She is about to be married and have her first every photography show. Then…just like that…the husband from her past has found her.

Addison is a character which stole my heart. I was captivated by her mysterious past and her flashbacks. When her past catches up to her, that is really where her story twists. Her convoluted past will haunt any reader for days!

Talk about a story that just won’t quit! I have loved all of Liv Constatine’s books. But this is by far the best! There were places in this story where I had to actually lay the book down a minute and breathe!

Audible reads for June #audiobooks #audiblebooks #wrapup

Here we go!

Ethel Rosenberg An American Tragedy
The Book of Longings
