“This one’s an absolute gem.” —Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Stolen Queen

She loves the calm and order in the shelves of books and walls of art. But Tildy’s life takes an unexpected turn when she, first, learns the library is on the verge of bankruptcy and, second, discovers two exquisite never-before-seen dollhouses.

After finding clues hidden within these remarkable miniatures, Tildy sets out to decipher the secret history of the dollhouses, aiming to salvage her cherished library in the process. Her journey introduces her to a world of ambitious and gifted women in Belle Époque Paris, a group of scarred World War I veterans in the English countryside, and Walt Disney’s bustling Burbank studio in the 1950s. As Tildy unravels the mystery, she finds not only inspiring, hidden history, but also a future for herself—and an astonishing familial revelation.

Bright Little Girls by Lorna Hollifield #bookreview

Overview

A wannabe author. A narcissistic musician. A serial killer. An average girl. Someone tells the story. Someone is the story. Someone steals the story. Someone won’t make it out of the story.

Eliane Pangolin isn’t like anyone her mysterious follower has ever met. She’s a 27-year-old struggling writer and wannabe dancer fighting obsessive-compulsive disorder while coping with her connection to a brutal crime. When she isn’t defying a restraining order by writing letters to an old friend, she’s trying to navigate feelings of both betrayal and beguile toward her lifelong male best friend. Everything in her life pulls from two directions, creating a tug-o-war she isn’t sure to escape.

Hollifield masterfully paints a character of conflicting attributes, a girl who lies underneath fake palm trees in her living room, but who also has an old soul that she swears once rubbed elbows with the Fitzgerald’s on some Parisian street. Broken and brilliant, antagonizing and alluring, readers will love following Eliane just as much as her narrator in the shadows.

A story about art, obsession, guilt, crime, and lust for… everything, Bright Little Girls is about learning to cope by finding the self, the most elusive character of all. This story will seep into the soul then invite it to come out and play.

This story is a quick, short read. It is a bit wordy in places and is a bit long between suspenseful situations.

But…I loved Elaine. She is a bit unpredictable and this kept the story moving for me. Plus, She has a connection to a serial killer! This will definitely keep you captivated! And just wait till the twisted ending…you won’t forget it!

The English Wife by Anna Stuart #historicalfiction #audiobook @bookouture

Overview

A completely gripping and inspirational World War 2 historical novel

1940, England: Clementine Churchill is standing alone on a rooftop in London as bombs rain down on the city when a nearby explosion almost knocks her off her feet. Shaking, she rushes homewards to 10 Downing Street and breathes a sigh of relief when she sees the famous building is still there. It means the Prime Minister–her husband–is still alive.

Stepping into Winston’s reassuring arms, she hears his steady heartbeat. She knew from the day they married thirty years ago that he wanted to lead the country. Since then, they’ve been a partnership in love and in politics. Tragedy once almost tore them apart… but now, Winston is Prime Minister, just as he always dreamed. Except, with the war against Hitler, it’s a much bigger responsibility than either of them ever expected: The world needs Winston, and Winston needs her.

While Winston co-ordinates battles across Europe, Clementine finds herself in the spotlight for the first time. Her husband’s name may be on the lips of every soldier and politician but she knows as she visits hospitals and campaigns for better conditions in air raid shelters, that the ordinary people speak her name just as much. She realises she has the potential to make a difference–not as Winston’s shadow in the background but as Clementine Churchill.

One evening, as she looks into Winston’s dear face, Clementine can tell his bravery comes at a cost. But can she overcome the heartbreaking loss in her past to help the man she loves succeed? And, together, can they finish the fight for freedom?

This is a fictional novel inspired by the remarkable life of Clementine Churchill. It is a story of the power of love and courage. It is the story of how a husband and wife saved the world. It is a story like no other…

This story is very well researched and I loved Clementine from start to finish. I have read quite a lot about the Churchill family. Clementine has always been in the back ground. Well, this novel brings her front and center. And she was an amazing woman. She is so strong. And her courage and intelligence comes out in every page of this novel. And let me tell you…Winston would have been nowhere without her!

The narrator,  Jane McDowell, has such a calming, smooth voice. I really enjoyed her!

I Would Die For You by Sandie Jones @macmillanaudio @minotaurbooks #bookreview

Overview

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Reese’s Book Club Pick The Other Woman and The Guilt Trip comes an electrifying next novel.

California, 2011: Nicole Forbes lives a quiet life in the small seaside town of Coronado with her husband and daughter. She is not expecting a writer to knock on her door asking for her personal insight into the downfall of the biggest British band of the 1980s—unveiling the threads of a life she left behind years ago. The same day, her daughter goes missing and the school claims her aunt picked her up . . . but she doesn’t have an aunt. Convinced of a link between the two, Nicole is forced to revisit long-abandoned memories from her past to protect everything she now holds dear.

London, 1986: Sixteen-year-old Cassie is obsessed with Secret Oktober, the hottest band of the moment. Harboring an intense crush on the leading man, Ben Edwards, she will do anything she can to capture his attention among the throngs of groupies at the band’s scandalous backstage parties. But when Ben discovers her older sister Nicole singing at a local bar one night, he can’t help but feel drawn to her, setting in motion a collision course that could tear their family apart.

Infused with the sounds of the 80s, this thrilling novel from the inimitable Sandie Jones explores the chaos that the frenzy of fandom can provoke.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Review

Nicole has a past that she has kept hidden from her husband. But it is now coming back to haunt her. Cassie, her sister, has been out of Nicole’s life for years and now….it appears..She is back and intends to get revenge.

This is a tale which took a while to get where it needed to be. It was a bit long and drawn out but I did enjoy the past history and learning what actually happened.

I sort of knew where this story was headed and who was doing what…but I did not see the twist at the end. And it is almost like there just might be a sequel. Time will tell!

The narrator, Imogen Wilde, did a good job. There are a lot of voices and she handles it well, except for the child. Y’all know this is something that drives me nuts. 😜😂

Review

I am usually not a big fan of this author. Some of her books are a bit too sweet for me. But this cover and this setting had me intrigued. And yes, this story is a bit on the sweet side but I enjoyed it! I loved this remote island and these characters!

Witness 8 by Steve Cavanagh @atriabooks #bookreview #thriller

Overview

This riveting psychological thriller from master of twists Steve Cavanagh, author of the “unguessable and unputdownable” (Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author) Kill For Me, Kill for You, asks: What if the witness was more twisted than the killer?

Something is wrong with Ruby Johnson.

A former resident of the ultra-elite Manhattan upper class, Ruby now works as a maid in the type of houses she used to live in. Unassuming, she sees everyone’s dirty secrets from the inside of their beautiful, renovated brownstones. But when Ruby witnesses a murder, she has wicked plans in mind that don’t involve telling the authorities the truth.

Eddie Flynn, streetwise ex con-artist-turned-defense attorney, is the only lawyer in New York City willing to take on hopeless cases. And none is more hopeless than John Jackson’s—the gun that killed his neighbor found, with Jackson’s DNA, in his own home. Flynn and his unconventional team will need to use every trick they know to keep an innocent man from being locked up. But to save his client’s life, Eddie must first protect his own, as the scariest organized criminals in the city are out for his head.

Well, I am in the minority on this one. I do have to say, it is full of diversity. I enjoyed that it is part organized crime, law thriller and psychological thriller. But, since the story is ALL THIS, it felt a bit disjointed in places.

I loved Eddie and his intellect. He is one smart lawyer and he takes no prisoners. Now, Ruby, I could have done without. And yes, I know she is a main part of the story. And yes, she is elemental to this tale. I just had a bit of issue with her part of this novel. I think I would have loved this story much better if it was just a law thriller…I know, I know! Like I always say, read this for yourself.

Overview

Tempest Raj couldn’t be happier that the family business, Secret Staircase Construction, is finally getting the recognition it deserves. But when a rehearsal ends with an actor murdered and the body vanishes, Tempest is witness to a seemingly impossible crime. Multiple award winning author Gigi Pandian masterfully weaves wit and warmth in the Secret Staircase Mysteries. Readers will delight in the surprises Secret Staircase Construction uncovers behind the next locked door.

Review

Though the work is far from done, Gray House Library’s new owner is eager to host a murder mystery dinner and literary themed escape room. But when a rehearsal ends with an actor murdered and the body vanishes, Tempest is witness to a seemingly impossible crime.

This is a bit like playing the game Clue! There are lots of guesses, suspects and suggestions, especially with the magician’s equipment and the secret stairs. This just adds to the “whodunnit” element.

I enjoyed the secrecy and the hunt for what the devil is going on. However, there are a lot of characters and sometimes the hidden secret is a bit too easy to guess.

The narrator, Soneela Nankani, did a very good job. Tons of voices in this novel and there is a distinct voice for everyone.

Love and loyalty collide with secrets and betrayal in this witty and emotional tale about the lengths we’ll go to for family, from Susan Mallery, New York Times bestselling author of The Boardwalk Bookshop.

Review

Beth and her brother, Rick, were raised in foster care. Rick is now a surgeon and Beth owns her own business. Beth becomes even happier when she learns Rick is now dating her best friend, Jana. Life seems to be going just right. Then Beth discovers a secret about Rick. Does she tell?

This is 3 and 1/2 stars rounded up, basically because I felt the conversations were a bit stilted. This is not my favorite Susan Mallery book. But it is a quick read, perfect for a trip to the beach.

I did enjoy Beth…up to a point. She is a bit beaten down by certain people in her life. But she comes into her own. Then there is Rick…you will have to read this find out…but boy did I want to beat him up!

A Map to Paradise by Susan Meissner #bookreview #historicalfiction @berkleypub

Overview

1956, Malibu, California: Something is not right on Paradise Circle.

With her name on the Hollywood blacklist and her life on hold, starlet Melanie Cole has little choice in company. There is her next-door neighbor, Elwood, but the screenwriter’s agoraphobia allows for just short chats through open windows. He’s her sole confidante, though, as she and her housekeeper, Eva, an immigrant from war-torn Europe, rarely make conversation.

Then one early morning Melanie and Eva spot Elwood’s sister-in-law and caretaker, June, digging in his beloved rose garden. After that they don’t see Elwood at all anymore. Where could a man who never leaves the house possibly have gone?

As they try to find out if something has happened to him, unexpected secrets are revealed among all three women, leading to an alliance that seems the only way for any of them to hold on to what they can still call their own. But it’s a fragile pact and one little spark could send it all up in smoke…

Review

Melanie Cole is on the blacklist in Hollywood, through no fault of her own. Everyone thinks since she is “dating” her costar that she is a communist. So, she has very few friends at the present time, except for her maid, Eva, and her next door neighbor, Elmwood.

Elmwood has agoraphobia and refuses to leave his house. So, when he goes radio silent and his sister-in-law has some strange behavior, it sends up warning signals to Melanie. And she does not take this sitting down…She is all up in June’s business.

This is not your typical Susan Meissner book. This one is missing her emotional kick. But y’all! I still enjoyed it. I loved the characters and I enjoyed the setting of the McCarthy era.

And don’t think that Melanie is just a dumb starlet. She has her moments! Add in Eva’s secrets and June’s lies…and you have a pretty entertaining read!

The Story She Left Behind by Patti Callahan Henry @atriabooks #bookreview

Overview

Indie Next April 2025 Pick • LibraryReads March 2025 Pick

“Brilliant, riveting, so beautifully written, impossible to put down.” —Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Inspired by a true literary mystery, New York Times bestselling author of the mesmerizing The Secret Book of Flora Lea returns with the sweeping story of a legendary book, a lost mother, and a daughter’s search for them both.

In 1927, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother, renowned author, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother.

By 1952, Clara is an illustrator raising her own daughter, Wynnie. When a stranger named Charlie Jameson contacts her from London claiming to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical. Compelled by the tragedy of her mother’s vanishing, she crosses the Atlantic with Wynnie only to arrive during one of London’s most deadly natural disasters—the Great Smog. With asthmatic Wynnie in peril, they escape the city with Charlie and find refuge in the Jameson’s family retreat nestled in the Lake District. It is there that Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind.

Told in Patti Callahan Henry’s lyrical, enchanting prose, The Story She Left Behind is a captivating novel of mystery and family legacy that captures the profound longing for a mother and the evergreen allure of secrets.

Review

Y’all! This book is pure magic!

This story captivated me. It has a little bit of everything…history, mystery, great characters and drama.

I loved Clara! She has great hope even though she fights this hope every day. This is the reason she sails to Europe to hunt for her mother one last time. She has hope!

Now, I don’t want to give anything away. Did I guess it? Yes and no! You will need to read this to find out. But, I swear, every time a new female character was introduced, I was sure it was going to be Clara’s mother.

Need a tale which will have you engrossed from start to finish…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!
