Patriarch Run by Benjamin Dancer

Overview

“A breathless thriller…a literary meditation clutching a straight razor behind its back. Bold, beautifully written, and surprising.” – Marcus Sakey, bestselling author of THE BRILLIANCE TRILOGY

Nine years ago, Jack Erikson was deployed to China to protect the United States from a cyberattack. Now, suffering from a drug-induced amnesia, he is unable to recognize his own son. What Jack knows for sure is that an elite group of operators is determined to kill him. What he does not yet remember is that he controls a cyber-weapon powerful enough to return human civilization to the Stone Age. If Jack lives long enough to piece together his mission and his identity, he will be forced to choose between the fate of humankind and that of his own family.

Readers of Cormac McCarthy and Peter Heller will appreciate both the suspense and the Western setting. In his thrilling literary debut, Benjamin Dancer also explores the timeless themes of fatherhood and the fraying fabric of global stability.

Review

Jack is under attack and so is his estranged family. Rachel, his wife is kidnapped. Billy, his son is part of a shoot out.  All of this is because of something Jack has done in the past. He just cannot remember what it is.

Jack has a magnetism which draws the reader in. He is damaged yet, he is strong and protective. He could be a “new book boyfriend”. I love the strong silent type. I love the way he and Rachel interact, before AND after he loses his memory. Rachel is a tough lady and when Jack busts back into her life, she becomes almost vicious.  This is her strength coming out to protect her son and herself.

It is choppy in places.  However, I feel this is by design. It creates a way for the reader to experience Jack’s amnesia, makes it extremely real life.

This story has so many levels it is hard to realize what is going on till the end. I thought I had it figured out when it shifted on me. The betrayal, the espionage and the action never stop. I was a little disappointed in the ending. The tale could have ended a little differently.  Oh well, I will live with it and move on!

This is a good shoot’em up, car chasing, espionage, fast paced thriller which never slows down. This would make a fabulous action/adventure film.

This novel is set for release in October.  Place this on preorder status!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

All is not Forgotten by Wendy Walker

Overview

In the small, affluent town of Fairview, Connecticut everything seems picture perfect.

Until one night when young Jenny Kramer is attacked at a local party. In the hours immediately after, she is given a controversial drug to medically erase her memory of the violent assault. But, in the weeks and months that follow, as she heals from her physical wounds, and with no factual recall of the attack, Jenny struggles with her raging emotional memory. Her father, Tom, becomes obsessed with his inability to find her attacker and seek justice while her mother, Charlotte, prefers to pretend this horrific event did not touch her perfect country club world.

As they seek help for their daughter, the fault lines within their marriage and their close-knit community emerge from the shadows where they have been hidden for years, and the relentless quest to find the monster who invaded their town – or perhaps lives among them – drive this psychological thriller to a shocking and unexpected conclusion.

Review

This is a hard book to read, mainly because of the subject matter. That being said, the story was completely engrossing.  I could not stop reading. And when I did have to stop, because life does tend to get in the way, the story stayed with me. Jenny, Adam, Charlotte and Tom all suffer in different ways and create a gripping story which I will not soon forget.

The writing is very unusual and unique. There are areas the story jumps ahead and then backs up to meld the whole tale together. This novel is told by a narrator which is the psychiatrist. He seems a little detached, especially when he is describing Jenny’s attack. This helps the reader get through the emotional aspects of this harrowing scene. However, it is still a very tragic and haunting experience. And the perpetrator is a guess till the very end!

This tale is not for every one. It is not a happy read and has some grisly activity. It is however, a read which will stay with me for a very long time!

I received this novel from Netgalley for a honest review.

Everywhere and Every Way by Jennifer Probst #XOXperts

Overview

Hot on the heels of her beloved Marriage to a Billionaire novels, New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst nails it with the first in an all-new sexy romance series featuring red-hot contractor siblings who give the Property Brothers a run for their money!

Ever the responsible eldest brother, Caleb Pierce started working for his father’s luxury contracting business at a young age, dreaming of one day sitting in the boss’s chair. But his father’s will throws a wrench in his plans by stipulating that Caleb share control of the family business with his two estranged brothers.

Things only get more complicated when demanding high-end home designer Morgan hires Caleb to build her a customized dream house that matches her specifications to a T—or she’ll use her powerful connections to poison the Pierce brothers’ reputation. Not one to ignore a challenge, Caleb vows to get the job done—if only he can stop getting distracted by his new client’s perfect…amenities.

But there’s more to icy Morgan than meets the eye. And Caleb’s not the only one who knows how to use a stud-finder. In fact, Morgan is pretty sure she’s found hers—and he looks quite enticing in a hard hat. As sparks fly between Morgan and Caleb despite his best intentions not to mix business and pleasure, will she finally warm up and help him lay the foundation for everlasting love?

Review

Morgan is a designer who gives as good as she gets. Cal is ooolala on a stick!! He is the “symbol of construction hotness.”

These two fight, fuss and all around bicker. But as with most romances, they have the hots for one another and just cannot keep their hands off!

This is a lightening fast read with a few surprises.  Some keep you in stitches and some make you so frustrated you just want to beat the characters senseless.

I love the way Cal and Morgan relate to each other. She is prim and proper. He is rough and tough. They are perfect for each other. He steps up to the plate to help her when she gets arrested…yes, I said arrested…OOOPS!! Probably should not have said that!! SPOILER ALERT..too late.

This is a wonderful beach read! HECK!! It’s a wonderful read no matter where you read it!!

I received this novel as part of Simon and Schuster’s XOXperts

By Victoria Bolton

Genre: Crime Fiction

Book Description

Say good-bye to the era of godfathers. The Chimera Group has put a new face on organized crime.

Mob boss Bernie Banks and his associates—John, Ben, and Jerome—differ from your ordinary Sicilian and Irish mob families. Two white, two black, they style themselves after the Rude Boy culture made popular in Jamaica.

Operating as a shell investment company supported by illegal activities, the Chimera Group hopes to become as powerful as other crime families and gain respect from the Cosa Nostra. Bernie, a war veteran of Jewish and Greek descent, begins his business in his apartment and grows it into a multimillion-dollar empire. He and his crew resemble a more sophisticated subculture of urban street gangsters with their Ray-Ban sunglasses, loafers, and debonair style. But they want fear and admiration.

Their efforts draw the attention of the rival Ambrosino family, and they face internal strife when one of the associates begins dating a former Playboy Club waitress who wants in on the group.

She also begins dating an unlikely suitor: creative Syd Blackman.

Just when her love life and career are looking up, Veronica is tossed back to square one by an event that makes her question all her new choices.

Review

This novel is about being happy. Basically, if you do not like something within your life, do something about it. This is exactly what Veronica eventually does. She is in a dead end lawyer job. She hates her boss, plus her work is boring! The choices you make in life have many consequences. Veronica finds this out every day of her life. She tries to “do right” by a client. Her boss throws a hissy fit!

Her boyfriend is moving to Europe. She can go “if she wants.” Not exactly the invitation she is looking for. She decides to dump her boyfriend and take a journalism class. She also signs up for Match.com

Through many twists and turns Veronica eventually finds her happy!! It is a struggle with many failed attempts. But, what fun is was to read about how she got there.

This is a wonderful book to take to the beach. Through all of Veronica’s ups and downs, the story just keeps unfolding. A very enticing and charming read from beginning to end!

I received this from the author for a honest review.

Megan Tayte bio

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess fireman. ‘Write, Megan,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did.
Thirty-odd years later, Megan is a professional writer and published author by day, and an indie novelist by night. Her fiction – young adult romance with soul – recently earned her the SPR’s Independent Woman Author of the Year award.
Megan grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in the village of Standish, Greater Manchester. She lives with her husband, a proud Scot who occasionally kicks back in a kilt; her son, a budding artist with the soul of a palaeontologist; and her baby daughter, a keen pan-and-spoon drummer who sings in her sleep. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her walking someplace green, reading by the fire, or creating carnage in the kitchen as she pursues her impossible dream: of baking something edible.

Murder in A-Minor

By Janis Thomas

Genre: Murder Mystery

 OVERVIEW

Former detective Samantha Wedlock is having a bad year. After botching a huge case with the New York PD, Sam flees to her childhood home of Southern California and escapes her demons with the Internet and booze. Her career is over, her instincts have taken a vay-cay, and her music—the songs she composes in her head to help her solve puzzles and the challenges of her life—has abandoned her. When her old flame, sexy Lieutenant Jack Hudson, shows up on her doorstep to ask for her help with the case of two murdered college coeds, Sam refuses. But she can’t resist Jack, and she can’t resist the hunt, and soon becomes enmeshed in the investigation. The more involved she becomes, the more she sees the case as a means of rediscovering the things she’s lost: her purpose, her drive, and her hope for the future. With her music playing at full volume, Sam must re-sharpen her wits and learn to trust her instincts again in order to catch a cunning killer.

REVIEW

Sam is a self-destructive, down on her luck cop. Until Jack shows up at her door with a serial murder case. With someone stalking her and someone killing women, Sam must come out of her shell and back to the real world.

I adore Sam! She is funny, sarcastic and down right rude at times. I love how she handles herself and Jack!
This is part romance, part suspense and mostly chick-lit. I laughed in places till I nearly fell off the couch. Other places, I was holding on for dear life!

I love the mystery, the thrills and the wit in this tale. I love how the author keeps the killer a secret till the end. I had my suspicions, but never really figured it out.

I hope there is another book with these same characters soon! This is a very entertaining read all the way to the end.  Hold on for a very interesting ride!
