Midnight Knock by John Fram #bookreview @atriabooks

Overview

A locked-room mystery meets white-knuckle horror in this mind-bending thriller, where strangers must survive a deadly night in a remote Texas motel.

In the frigid west Texas desert, weary travelers converge at a lonely roadside motel nestled at the foot of a massive mountain. Ethan and Hunter have left behind a corpse, a fire, and a horrific act of violence. Kyla and Fernanda are fleeing for the border. Stanley and his granddaughter are returning from Mexico with a mysterious man in hot pursuit. All of them are on the run from something. All of them are hiding something.

And somehow, they’re all connected to the motel’s other guest, an enigmatic woman named Sarah Powers.

Within hours, Sarah is dead. The strange twins who run the Brake Inn Motel inform the surviving guests that her murder demands justice. The guests are given an ultimatum: uncover the killer by midnight—or die when the protective lights around the motel go out.

Because something very old and very dangerous lurks in this corner of the desert. And it’s hungry.

But nothing at the Brake Inn Motel is quite as it seems. As time ticks away, alliances fracture, secrets unravel, and the guests will not only have to confront the violence of the past—they will need to face the darkness within themselves.

A masterful blend of psychological tension, supernatural horror, and layered storytelling, The Midnight Knock pushes the boundaries of what a mystery can be. And with its unforgettable climax, this novel cements John Fram as a contemporary master of the genre.

In the frigid west Texas desert, weary travelers converge at a lonely roadside motel nestled at the foot of a massive mountain. Stanley and his granddaughter are returning from Mexico with a mysterious man in hot pursuit. All of them are on the run from something. All of them are hiding something.

This story has a great premise. It is horror driven with a captured audience in an old hotel. And it has some terror filled moments. But, it just moved so slow. It took forever for the intensity to get where I needed it to be.

And as with some characters in a horror film…they make dumb decisions. And that is true in this book as well. It also has some weird Sci-Fi elements that just didn’t seem to fit.

This is 2.5 stars rounded up.

The Graceview Patient by Caitlin Starling #bookreview #thriller #audiobook @dreamscapeaudio

Overview

Misery meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers in this genre-bending, claustrophobic hospital gothic from the bestselling author of The Death of Jane Lawrence.

Margaret’s rare autoimmune condition has destroyed her life, leaving her isolated and in pain. It has no cure, but she’s making do as best she can—until she’s offered a fully paid-for spot in an experimental medical trial at Graceview Memorial.

The conditions are simple, if grueling: she will live at the hospital as a full-time patient, subjecting herself to the near-total destruction of her immune system and its subsequent regeneration. The trial will essentially kill most of, but not all of her. But as the treatment progresses and her body begins to fail, she stumbles upon something sinister living and spreading within the hospital.

Unsure of what’s real and what is just medication-induced delusion, Margaret struggles to find a way out as her body and mind succumb further to the darkness lurking throughout Graceview’s halls.

Review

Margaret’s rare autoimmune condition has destroyed her life, leaving her isolated and in pain. It has no cure, but she’s making do as best she can—until she’s offered a fully paid-for spot in an experimental medical trial at Graceview Memorial.

This story is good. It is just a bit monotonous. It goes on and on about her sickness and what they are doing. And I am medical so I enjoy books about medicine but this sort of got on my nerves just a bit. However, it is creepy enough to keep you entertained with WHAT THE CRAP IS GOING ON questions.

And then it gets weird…that is just the only way to put it. I was truly captivated with trying to figure out where this was leading.

The narrator, Xe Sands, is one of my favorites. She has such a calming voice and this really is great in the creepy parts.

The Widow by John Grisham #bookreview #thriller @doubledaybooks

Overview

#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham is the acclaimed master of the legal thriller. Now, he’s back with his first-ever whodunit, even more suspenseful than his courtroom dramas, as a small-time lawyer accused of murder races to find the real killer to clear his name.

“A classic, compulsive, taut and thrilling novel from one of the great storytellers of our time. The Widow is John Grisham at his irresistible, unforgettable best.”—Chris Whitaker, author of All the Colors of the Dark

Simon Latch is a lawyer in rural Virginia, making just enough to pay his bills while his marriage slowly falls apart. Then into his office walks Eleanor Barnett, an elderly widow in need of a new will. Apparently, her husband left her a small fortune, and no one knows about it.

Once he hooks the richest client of his career, Simon works quietly to keep her wealth under the radar. But soon her story begins to crack. When she is hospitalized after a car accident, Simon realizes that nothing is as it seems, and he finds himself on trial for a crime he swears he didn’t commit: murder.

Simon knows he’s innocent. But he also knows the circumstantial evidence is against him, and he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. To save himself, he must find the real killer….

Review

This story starts strong and sort of slows down in the middle. But in true John Grisham fashion…THE ENDING!

I enjoyed Simon. Lord, is he a hot mess and yes, he wants the widow’s money. However, he does have some intelligence on how to go about it. But that doesn’t necessarily save him.

Then there is Eleanor. I didn’t quite know what to make of her. Does she have the money? Does she not have the money? Is this a big scam? WHAT?!

This is an intricate tale that will keep you guessing. And yes…I guessed wrong on more than one occasion!

The Bolden Cylinder by Norman Woolworth #bookreview

Overview

A potentially momentous discovery. A suspicious fire. A 50-year-old missing person’s case. Are they connected?

When Buddy Bolden died in a Louisiana insane asylum in 1931, a quarter century after his reign as the undisputed first “king” of jazz, he left behind no known recordings. But when quirky New Orleans antiques dealer Bruneau Abellard listens to a vintage phonograph cylinder he found in the secret compartment of a sideboard, he wonders if he has stumbled upon an important piece of musical history. In researching his discovery, Bruneau runs headlong into an arson investigation led by his childhood friend, NOPD Detective Bo Duplessis, which in turn may hold the key to a 50-year-old unsolved missing person’s case.

To untangle their present-day mysteries, Bruneau and Bo must first piece together a perplexing string of puzzles from the distant past. Their parallel investigations immerse them in the rhythm-and-blues subculture of 1960s New Orleans, and transport them to the dawn of the 20th Century, when a brash young musician introduced a new sound to the city, forever changing the course of music history.

Fast-paced and vividly drawn, The Bolden Cylinder introduces a memorable cast of eccentric characters, including a malodorous collector of early R&B memorabilia, a sultry nightclub singer, a reputed mob boss, a 12-year-old tap dancer, and an inscrutable peddler of voodoo paraphernalia. Together, they serve up a savory gumbo of suspenseful intrigue set against the seductive backdrop of a city in which past and present are forever interwoven.

I expected more from this book. I wanted more from the asylum and more history. Plus, it is not as fast paced as I like. It is enjoyable but it is a bit wordy. That is not to say it is not a good read. I think I went into this tale with different expectations than the author.

That being said, I loved the setting of New Orleans. The author took you all over this area and did a fabulous job. I have not been to N.O. in quite a while. But I could just picture it. AND THE FOOD!

The mystery is also different with a wonderful myriad of characters. And the way it is woven together definitely keeps the reader guessing to what is going to happen next.

This book hit me at a great time. I needed this after some heavy reads. This was perfect!

There are quite a few characters in this book. Usually this is a turn off for me. But I loved each and every one.

And then there is the diversity of all the couples. This made the whole book for me. You have Rosie and Declan…complete misunderstanding in their realm. Then there is Becky and Will…pretend romance and you know where this leads. And finally you have Hayley and Jamie…completely sweet and adorable.

Add in the family dynamics with the meddling moms and the outspoken grandmother(my favorite by the way) and you have an adorable Christmas tale that just makes you smile!

The Haunting of Paynes Hollow by Kelley Armstrong #bookreview #audiobook @stmartinspress @macmillanaudio

Overview

From New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong comes a nail-biting supernatural horror about a haunted lakeside property and twisted family secrets.

When Samantha Payne’s grandfather dies, she figures she won’t even get a mention in the will. After all, she hasn’t seen him in fourteen years, not since her father took his own life after being accused of murdering a child at their lakefront cottage. Her grandfather always insisted her father was innocent, despite Sam having caught him burying the child’s body, his clothing streaked with blood.

But when she does attend the reading of the will at the behest of her aunt, she discovers that her grandfather left her the very valuable lakefront property where the family cottage sits. There’s one catch: Sam needs to stay in the cottage for a month. To finally face the fact she was wrong and her father was innocent, in her grandfather’s words.

Traveling to Paynes Hollow, Sam is faced with the realities of her childhood and the secrets kept hidden in the shadows of her memories. When her aunt goes missing a couple days into their stay, Sam begins to question everything again. Plagued by nightmares and paranoia, she begins hearing sounds in the forest and seeing shapes crawling from the water as the rippling waves of the lake promise something unspeakably dark lurking just below their surface.

Review

Traveling to Paynes Hollow, Sam is faced with the realities of her childhood and the secrets kept hidden in the shadows of her memories. When her aunt goes missing a couple days into their stay, Sam begins to question everything again.

Now this did get a bit weird, especially at the end. And by weird…I mean it turns slightly to the horror side.

However, the intensity just slowly keeps building as this story moves along, especially where Sam is concerned. I loved second guessing her actions.

As a reader, you truly have no idea what is actually going on. Where is Sam’s aunt? Did Sam kill her? What about the past? There are lots of questions. This just adds to the tension. Plus, I enjoyed the creepy feeling throughout this story. (Until it got to the weird part!😜)

Kelley Armstrong is a very diverse writer. So the ending of this tale did not really surprise me with the unique turn..but then again it did. You need to read this to find out.

The narrator, EJ Lavery, is a good one.

The Man Next Door by Sheila Roberts #bookreview @harlequinbooks

Overview

Love in the Time of Serial Killers meets The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window in this delightful romp about a recently broke divorcee who moves in with her house-bound mother only to spend their days spying on her grumpy, mysterious, and sexy new neighbor.

Zona never thought her life was headed this way, but here she is, newly divorced and moving back in with her mom, Louise. After her gambling addicted ex-husband lost all of their savings, including their daughter’s college fund, she doesn’t really have a choice. She’s cutting every coupon she can and she’s going to help put her daughter through nursing school, even if it kills her.

This wasn’t Louise’s plan, either, laid up at home with a broken leg after one unfortunate tumble on the senior singles cruise she’d been looking forward to for months. But if she’s going to spend all her time at home, at least she’s got her daughter there with her. And there’s some hot new eye candy next door to distract them both from their troubles. He appears to be single and just around Zona’s age. Could his arrival be the universe making amends for everything it’s put her through?

Maybe the universe isn’t feeling as generous as Louise hoped. There’s something lurking under that mans surface charm, something…dangerous? And who’s the woman they can hear him in all-out shouting matches with on the other side of the fence? When the woman seems to disappear without a trace, imaginations run wild. Or at least, Zona hopes it’s just her mother’s imagination…

Review

Zona has had to move back in with her mother, Louise. She never planned on her life falling apart the way that it has. Her ex husband gambled all of their finances away and now Zona is trying to rebuild. Louise, on the other hand, is laid up at home after a fall on a singles cruise. And boy does this lead to some snooping and completely off base assumptions.

Zona is someone that tries so hard to do the right thing but life just keeps knocking her down. But to her credit, she just keeps getting right back up and fighting. Louise on the other hand…she tickled the mess out of me. She is every older lady in my home town…all up in someone’s business.

These two ladies along with Zona’s daughter Bree and Louise’s caretaker end up spying on the grumpy man next door, Alec. And don’t think this didn’t lead to some hilarious confrontations.

Now, this book started a bit slow. But I loved these characters. Add in the mystery, romance, and funny antics and you have a good tale to get you through the day.

The narrator, Courtney Patterson, nailed these characters, especially Louise!

The Missing Pages by Alyson Richman #bookreview #historicalfiction

Overview

A ghost in a library. A story waiting to be told. The Missing Pages is a rich, lyrical novel that reminds us that books are as eternal as the soul.

1912:  Harry Widener, a promising and passionate book collector, boards the Titanic holding tight to a priceless volume he’s just purchased in London. After catastrophe strikes the ship, Harry’s last known words are that he must return to his cabin to retrieve his latest treasure. Neither the young man nor the book are ever seen again. Honoring her son’s memory, Harry’s mother builds the Harry Widener Memorial Library at Harvard to house his extensive book collection and ensure his legacy.

Decades later, Violet Hutchins, a Harvard sophomore recovering from her own great loss, is working as a page at the Widener Library. For fans of The Midnight Library and The Book Thief, bestselling author Alyson Richman has written a love story, a ghost story, and an elegy to the healing power of books.

Review

Well I certainly did not have falling in love with a ghost on my 2025 bingo card, but I fell hard for Harry!

I enjoyed so much about this tale! Your heart goes out to Harry. But it also goes out to Violet. Both have tragedies in their worlds. And the way the author creates secrets and weaves their lives together is marvelous. Violet and Harry, in their two different worlds, will have your heart racing. From Malice to Ashes by Gary W. Toyn #historicalfiction #bookreview

Overview

Sobering, meticulously researched, and emotionally raw.” —BookLife Reviews (Publisher’s Weekly) – Editor’s Pick

“A piercing and detailed look at a lesser-known aspect of the Second World War.” — Kirkus Reviews

Before Auschwitz, before the gas chambers, there was Ponary—a forest outside Vilnius where 75,000 Jews were executed during World War II. In the beginning, the killers weren’t the Nazis. They were neighbors. From Malice to Ashes: is a haunting historical novel that reveals one of the Holocaust’s earliest and most overlooked atrocities—the Ponary Massacre in Lithuania—where local militias carried out mass murder while SS officers stood by and took notes.

Olek Kosmen, a young Jewish man, becomes an unwilling eyewitness and chronicler. Hiding in the woods, he secretly records the horrors in a journal—until he’s captured and forced into the “Burning Brigade,” a prisoner unit ordered to exhume and destroy the bodies to hide the crime. Meanwhile, his fiancée escapes to neutral Sweden, and her family is exiled to the frozen gulags of Siberia. Their survival depends on impossible choices—and an escape tunnel dug with bare hands beneath a mass grave. Meticulously researched and deeply moving, this story is not just a look back at history—it’s a warning. In an age when antisemitism is once again on the rise, From Malice to Ashes reminds us what happens when hatred goes unchallenged and silence becomes complicity.

Review

Olek Kosmen, a young Jewish man, becomes an unwilling eyewitness and chronicler of the Ponary massacre. Meanwhile, his fiancée escapes to neutral Sweden, and her family is exiled to the frozen gulags of Siberia. Their survival depends on impossible choices.

One of the main things I loved about this book was the setting. The setting is not Germany or England as with most of the WWII novels. This is set in Lithuania and Siberia. I found this unique. But the tragic circumstances are the same. And this author brings those front and center.

I will say, some of the conversations were a bit “canned” and it is a bit wordy in places. But the intensity just keeps building.

This is a moving story that will break your heart but shows true resilience and strength.

The narrator, Matt Strong, did a good job. He did keep the story moving smoothly. I do believe the conversations in certain areas were the issue for me.
