Within These Walls of Sorrow by Amanda Barratt #booktwitter #bookreview #5stars @amandambarratt @kregelbooks

Overview

As superbly written as it is haunting in its truth.” –Kate Breslin, best-selling author of For Such a Time
“This tense WWII historical from Barratt (My Dearest Dietrich) follows a woman’s efforts to help her neighbors survive the Kraków ghetto. . . . Moving and effective, this inspirational finds light in the darkest of places.”–Publishers Weekly
Zosia Lewandowska knows the brutal realities of war all too well. Within weeks of Germany’s invasion of her Polish homeland, she lost the man she loves. As ghetto walls rise and the occupiers tighten their grip on the city of Krakow, Zosia joins pharmacist Tadeusz Pankiewicz and his staff in the heart of the Krakow ghetto as they risk their lives to aid the Jewish people trapped by Nazi oppression.
Hania Silverman’s carefree girlhood is shattered as her family is forced into the ghetto. Struggling to survive in a world hemmed in by walls and rife with cruelty and despair, she encounters Zosia, her former neighbor, at the pharmacy. As deportation winnow the ghetto’s population and snatch those she holds dear, Hania’s natural resiliency is exhausted by reality.
Zodia and Hania’s lives intertwine as they face the griefs and fears thrust upon them by war, until one day, they are forced to make a desperate choice . . . one that will inexorably bind them together, even as they are torn apart.
Amanda Barratt’s meticulous research and lush, award-winning writing shine once again in this moving look at a group of unsung heroes who fought for hope and humanity in the most harrowing of times.

“An unflinching tale that implores readers to stop and see, not a massive crowd of people, but individual hearts and souls. This book will linger in your heart and mind long after you’ve read the final page.” –Amanda Cox, Christy Award-winning author of The Edge of Belonging

Review

Hania has lost so much. She and her family have been forced to enter the Krakow ghetto. And her life just steadily gets worse. Hania is eventually sent to a concentration camp where it takes all her strength and fortitude to survive the Nazis and their cruelty.

This story is told from two different viewpoints, Hania and Zosia. Hania’s life has been turned upside down when her family is moved into the Krakow Ghetto. Zosia, is a friend who becomes a pharmacist inside the ghetto and does all she can to help Hania’s family and many more.

There are not enough words to describe this novel. Heart wrenching, terrifying, agonizing…just to name a few. I could not stop reading this…I know this sounds cliché…but honestly… I was glued to the pages. It is beautifully written. I loved how the author interspersed hope into this story. Along with the trauma and the horrible treatment, there are also good people doing what they can.

I believe I have already read my best book of the year. THIS ONE! I never pick the best of the year. But, I believe this one is it!

Murder Book by Thomas Perry @mysteriouspress #audiobook #audiblebook #bookreview #booktwitter

Overview

An ex-cop takes on a widespread criminal organization targeting midwestern towns in this new thriller from the author of The Old Man

When a sudden crime wave hits several small midwestern towns, the US Attorney for the region calls on Harry Duncan to investigate. An ex-cop known for his unorthodox methods, Duncan is reluctant to go up against a widespread criminal organization—but the attorney in question is Ellen Leicester, the wife who left him fifteen years earlier, and to her, he can’t say no.

Initially brought in as a consultant to determine if the racketeering is severe enough to require an all-out investigation by the FBI, Duncan quickly finds himself in conflict with a syndicate far more violent than first suspected. As the investigation develops, he begins compiling a “murder book,” the notebook in which a detective keeps records, interviews, photos—everything he needs to build his case. But his scrutiny of the gang soon makes Duncan a target. And Ellen, too.

A thrilling and suspenseful tour of crime-addled midwestern towns, Murder Book is signature Thomas Perry, with characters you won’t soon forget, crisply-described action sequences, and breathlessly-tense plotting.

Review

Harry’s ex-wife, Ellen…the new US attorney, has asked him to investigate a new crime wave in the mid west. Harry takes this on with almost no hesitation. But, he soon discovers more than he expected. And he and Ellen both end up on the run!

I really enjoyed Harry Duncan. He is no nonsense and pretty dang smart. He is very unconventional and I enjoyed his unique ways of going about things.

This story moves quickly. And boy, does it get intense, especially towards the end. I loved the chase. I could definitely see this as a tv show!

The narrator, Peter Berkrot , is not my favorite. He tends to be overly dramatic and he speeds up in the exciting parts. But, this did not take away from the story. I did roll my eyes in places over his portrayal.

The Backup Plan by Jill Shalvis #booktwitter #bookreview @avonbooks @jillshalvis

Overview

New York Times bestselling authorJill Shalvis returns to Sunrise Cove with a heartwarming tale of three people who are brought together when they’re bequeathed an old Wild West inn that has the potential to pull their lives apart, but instead turns into the gift of a lifetime.

When Alice receives a call about an unexpected windfall, she’s stunned to learn the gift is a falling-apart-at-the-seams old Wild West B&B she once considered home—and she’s inherited it along with two strangers. Except they weren’t always strangers. Once upon a time, they were friends. One is her ex-BFF Lauren. The other is Knox, the only guy to ever break her heart, all while never even knowing she existed.

It turns out their lives are unknowingly entangled because they once separately helped the same woman without expecting anything in return. Years later, Alice, Lauren, and Knox are broken in their own way, with their own history—and secrets— causing them to start out on the wrong foot with each other. But according to the will, they must renovate and be partners in the inn for one year or else lose their inheritance.

Stuck together, they make a list of rules to keep the peace—rules that end up doing the opposite, but by some miracle they find what they didn’t even know they were looking for—acceptance, true friendship, and in a case (or two!), true love.

Review

Knox, Lauren and Alice have inherited a Wild West B&B. These three have a past and it is full of hurt feelings and heart break. But, they decide to put aside their differences and come together to fix this fixer upper. It turns out to be the lifeline they all need.

I fell hard for Knox. I mean…who wouldn’t! Then there is Lauren. Talk about quirky! She is no nonsense and tough. Add sweet, mild Alice to the mix and you have a perfect blend of characters to keep this story animated!

No one does snarky like Jill Shalvis. This author has become my “go to” for anything light. I always laugh and get caught up in the story. And this one is no different. I swear, I know every character in this book, or at least, related to them!

Just The Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica @harlequinbooks #booktwitter #bookreview

Just the Nicest Couple

On Sale Date: January 10, 2023 9780778333111, 0778333116 Hardcover
$28.99 USD, $35.99 CAD Fiction / Thrillers / Domestic 320 pages

About the Book:
A husband’s disappearance links two couples in this twisty thriller from New York Times bestselling author Mary Kubica
Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife, Nina, thinks he is blowing off steam at a friend’s house after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found.
Lily Scott, Nina’s friend and coworker, thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina. But Nina is out there looking for her husband, and she won’t stop until the truth is discovered.

Review

Lily has a secret. She was the last to see Jake alive. As a matter of fact, she thinks she is the one who killed him. She and her husband have an elaborate plan to cover all of this up. But it all starts to fall apart and Jake’s wife, Nina, knows something is not right and she is not going to give up!

I hate it when a story has stupid characters. I felt Lily and her husband, Christian were extremely dumb. Trying to cover up a “supposed” murder. This just did not sit well with me…but as the story unfolded, it all became clear. And I come back to my favorite saying… “what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!”

I absolutely loved Local Woman Missing. And this book started out and was just ok. However, the ending is what made the whole book for me! I may talk about stupid characters…but I was a bit surprised. You need to read this to find out.

There are places where the author is redundant. She repeats the same phrase a couple of pages over. Now, this is an ARC. So, the final edits may not have been finished yet. It is just something I noticed.

The Nazi Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer, John Mensch #nonfiction #audiobook #audiblebook @macmillanaudio @bradmeltzer

Overview

Brick … [is] on fire in this audiobook. His enthralling voice builds excitement.”—AudioFile on The Lincoln Conspiracy

From the New York Times bestselling authors of The First Conspiracy and The Lincoln Conspiracy comes the little-known true story of a Nazi plot to kill FDR, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill at the height of World War II.

In 1943, as the war against Nazi Germany raged abroad, President Franklin Roosevelt had a critical goal: a face-to-face sit-down with his allies Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill. This first-ever meeting of the Big Three in Tehran, Iran, would decide some of the most crucial strategic details of the war. Yet when the Nazis found out about the meeting, their own secret plan took shape—an assassination plot that would’ve changed history.

A true story filled with daring rescues, body doubles, and political intrigue, The Nazi Conspiracy details FDR’s pivotal meeting in Tehran and the deadly Nazi plot against the heads of state of the three major Allied powers who attended it.

With all the hallmarks of a Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch page-turner, The Nazi Conspiracy explores the great political minds of the twentieth century, investigating the pivotal years of the war in gripping detail. This meeting of the Big Three changed the course of World War II. Here’s the inside story of how it almost led to a world-shattering disaster.

A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books.

Review

I thought I knew a great deal about WWII. Heck, I even did my term paper in high school on D-Day. But I certainly did not know about a plot or almost a plot to kill Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. The Big 3 meeting changed the whole course of the war. And it almost did not happen.

I loved how the authors delved into all the background players. Minor issues and minor players had an enormous impact on the outcome of this horrible war. And these authors brought a great deal of this to the surface.

There is so much history and so much research in this book. I actually may turn around and listen to it again. I know I missed something.

The narrator, Scott Brick, is one of my absolute favorites. He makes non fiction entertaining!

The Three Lives of Alix St. Pierre by Natasha Lester @wunderkindpr #historicalfiction #bookreview #booktwitter

Overview

An unforgettable and “fascinating tale” of an orphan turned WWII spy turned fashion icon in Paris (Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye).
Alix St. Pierre. An unforgettable name for an unforgettable woman. She grew up surrounded by Hollywood glamor, but, as an orphan, never truly felt part of that world. In 1943, with WWII raging and men headed overseas to fight, she lands a publicity job to recruit women into the workforce. Her skills—persuasion, daring, quick-witted under pressure—catch the attention of the U.S. government and she finds herself with an even bigger assignment: sent to Switzerland as a spy. Soon Alix is on the precipice of something big, very big. But how far can she trust her German informant…?

After an Allied victory that didn’t come nearly soon enough, Alix moves to Paris, ready to immerse herself in a new position as director of publicity for the yet-to-be-launched House of Dior. In the glamorous halls of the French fashion house, she can nearly forget everything she lost and the dangerous secret she carries. But when a figure from the war reappears and threatens to destroy her future, Alix realizes that only she can right the wrongs of the past …and finally find justice.

Review

Alix has been hired by Christian Dior to be the publicity director for his new design house. She immerses herself in the challenge. But, when she sees someone from her past, she knows she is in danger. She must do all she can to protect herself and the secret she must hang on to.

I absolutely adored Alix. She gets knocked down but she is never out! She has lost so much and she is struggling to overcome the lasting emotions from the war. And then there is Anthony. He is special, there is no doubt. And he has Alix’s back, even if she doesn’t think so.

I enjoyed the complexity of this novel. I had no idea how it would turn out. This is a story which had me guessing, wanting and expecting! And it did not disappoint.

Then there is Christian Dior. I loved learning about him and his antics. I am going to have to read more about this amazing man which surrounded himself with strong women!

All The Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham @macmillanaudio #bookreview #booktwitter #audiobook #audiblebook

Overview

“[Karissa] Vacker switches easily between the higher female voices and the lower male voices, creating recognizable and believable characters…. Listeners will enjoy a gripping and twisty story.” (AudioFile on Earphones Award winner A Flicker in the Dark)

Following up her instant New York Times bestseller, A Flicker in the Dark, Stacy Willingham delivers a totally gripping thriller about a desperate mother with a troubled past in All the Dangerous Things.

One year ago, Isabelle Drake’s life changed forever: her toddler son, Mason, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase, the case quickly went cold. However, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her—literally.

Except for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time, she hasn’t slept in a year.

Isabelle’s entire existence now revolves around finding him, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever. In hopes of jarring loose a new witness or buried clue, she agrees to be interviewed by a true-crime podcaster—but his interest in Isabelle’s past makes her nervous. His incessant questioning paired with her severe insomnia has brought up uncomfortable memories from her own childhood, making Isabelle start to doubt her recollection of the night of Mason’s disappearance, as well as second-guess who she can trust… including herself. But she is determined to figure out the truth no matter where it leads.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Review

Isabelle has not slept in over a year except for a cat nap or two. Her son was stolen out of her home and she has now changed her focus. All of her focus is strictly on finding her child. She will not rest until she knows what happened Mason. But her own childhood is not innocent, so she begins questioning herself and what actually happened the evening Mason was taken.

There are a lot of moving parts to this novel and the moment you think you know…you don’t know!

I loved Isabelle. My heart broke for her and her situation. And then when she starts to question her ability as a mom…geez! Then, when you actually find out about her past and what happened the night Mason went missing…it makes your blood boil!

I loved this author’s previous book, A Flicker in the Dark. But this one, I fluctuated between 4 and 5 stars. I decided on 5 because the ending is so good. It does have some slow places and mundane details but that is by design. I did listen to it. I have more patience with a slow burn that way as well.

The narrator, Karissa Vacker, nailed all the characters. She has just the right tone with Isabelle too. You can definitely hear the heartbreak in her voice.

A Chance Inheritance by Carolyn Brown @sourcebookscasa #booktwitter #bookreview

Overview

A Southern homecoming is always a little bitter, a whole lot sweet, and full of surprises.

Upon inheriting their sassy grandmother’s home and family bait shop, cousins Lanie, Jodi, and Becky Cornell return to Catfish, Texas, looking for a fresh start. Turns out living as roommates in Granny Lizzie’s tiny two-bedroom house and running the Catfish Fisherman’s Hut isn’t at all like the idyllic summers they spent as children on the banks of the Red River. The days are long and hot, the tourists demanding and rude. And then there’s Chris Adams, a local river guide who seems to have eyes only for Becky.

But Lizzie’s death has set in motion a chain of events that will cause a new generation of Cornell women to come together. And thanks to this chance inheritance, the Cornell cousins discover that sometimes an ending is really a new beginning .

Includes a Bonus novella The Third Wish by Carolyn Brown.

“Fresh, funny, and sexy.”―Booklist for Love Drunk Cowboy

“Filled with quirky characters and a healthy dose of humor…yet the highlight of the novel is the sweet and sensual romance.”―Publishers Weekly for One Texas Cowboy Too Many

Review

The Cornell girls have just inherited their grandmother’s bait shop. They each have decided to stay and continue what every Cornell woman for generations has done, keep the bait shop going! Each of these young ladies have their own issues to come to terms with. But, with the help of each other, their strength shows through.

This is your typical Carolyn Brown story. I enjoy her books. They are a good palate cleanser. I have read quite a few thrillers lately and I needed something different. Now, like I said, it is typical. Nothing is ever new in her books. But I do enjoy the characters, the southern setting and the shortness. Yes, this story is short and sweet and it fit the bill! I needed this type of book to keep me out of a slump and on the right track.

My Darkest Prayer by S. A. Cosby #booktwitter #audiobook #audiblebook @macmillanaudio #5stars

Overview

Introduction read by the author.

“Adam Lazarre-White’s narration is multifaceted. His deep, resonating voice creates an enveloping soundscape, and he fully embodies the unique main characters of Cosby’s latest crime novel.”—AudioFile on Razorblade Tears

Award-winning New York Times bestselling author S. A. Cosby’s debut novel My Darkest Prayer is republished in a new edition, with a new introduction from the author.

“I handle the bodies.”

Whether it’s working at his cousin’s funeral home or tossing around the local riffraff at his favorite bar, Nathan Waymaker is a man who knows how to handle the bodies. A former marine and sheriff’s deputy, Nathan has built a reputation in his small Southern town as a man who can help when all other avenues have been exhausted. When a beloved local minister is found dead, his parishioners ask Nathan to make sure the death isn’t swept under the rug.

What starts out as an easy payday soon descends into a maze of mayhem filled with wannabe gangsters, vicious crime lords, porn stars, crooked police officers, and a particularly treacherous preacher and his mysterious wife. Nathan must use all his varied skills and some of his wit to navigate the murky waters of small town corruption even as dark secrets of his own threaten to come to the surface.

A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books.

Review

Nathan Waymaker has trouble staying out of trouble. So when a local pastor dies under mysterious circumstances and the ladies of the church ask Nathan to look into it, boy, does it open a can of worms!

Nathan is a character in which I love! He really tries to do good, well…until he just can’t. He is tough as nails and smart as a whip. And he is loyal to a fault. He is also a smart aleck. I found myself laughing out loud in places.

This story had me jumping for joy, gasping for breath and just plain terrified all in the same paragraph! Talk about intense! This is a book I would love to see made into a movie. And I never say that! Hollywood never gets it right. But this would make a fabulous, action-packed thriller.

Y’all! The narrator, Adam Lazarre-White is one of the best I have ever heard. His deep voice fit my image of Nathan to a “T”!

The Blackhouse by Carole Johnstone

Overview

From the author of the “dark and devious…beautifully written” (Stephen King) Mirrorland comes a richly atmospheric thriller set on an isolated Scottish island where nothing is as it seems and shocking twists lie around every corner.

A remote village. A deadly secret. An outsider who knows the truth.

Robert Reid moved his family to Scotland’s Outer Hebrides in the 1990s, driven by hope, craving safety and community, and hiding a terrible secret. But despite his best efforts to fit in, Robert is always seen as an outsider. And as the legendary and violent Hebridean storms rage around him, he begins to unravel, believing his fate on the remote island of Kilmeray cannot be escaped.

For her entire life, Maggie MacKay has sensed something was wrong with her. When Maggie was five years old, she announced that a man on Kilmeray—a place she’d never visited—had been murdered. Her unfounded claim drew media attention and turned the locals against each other, creating rifts that never mended.

Nearly twenty years later, Maggie is determined to find out what really happened, and what the islanders are hiding. But when she begins to receive ominous threats, Maggie is forced to consider how much she is willing to risk to discover the horrifying truth.

Unnerving, enthralling, and filled with gothic suspense, The Blackhouse is a spectacularly sinister tale readers won’t soon forget.

Review

Maggie has known her entire life that something is just not right with her. When she was 5 years old, she announced that she was a reincarnated man. This drew all kinds of media attention and bad allegations. Now, 20 years later Maggie has returned and she is wanting answers.

I enjoyed a great deal about this novel. The setting, the weirdness of Maggie and then roll in the past and you just have an all around good read. It does have a great many characters and that was a bit tough in places. But, that is just a minor issue.

Maggie really kept the story going for me. I wanted her to achieve her goal! I wanted to know everything. And the way the author kept me glued to the setting of this isle off Scotland…I felt like I was right there experiencing all the weather and the weird townspeople.
