How I’ll Kill You by Ren DeStefano @berkleypub #booktwitter #bookreview #suspense

Overview

Your next stay-up-all-night thriller, about identical triplets who have a nasty habit of killing their boyfriends, and what happens when the youngest commits their worst crime yet: falling in love with her mark.

Make him want you.
Make him love you.
Make him dead.

Sissy has an…interesting family. Always the careful one, always the cautious one, she has handled the cleanup while her serial killer sisters have carved a path of carnage across the U.S. Now, as they arrive in the Arizona heat, Sissy must step up and embrace the family pastime of making a man fall in love and then murdering him. Her first target? A young widower named Edison—and their mutual attraction is instant. While their relationship progresses, and most couples would be thinking about picking out china patterns and moving in together, Sissy’s family is reminding her to think about picking out burial sites and moving on.

Then something happens that Sissy never anticipated: She begins to feel protective of Edison, and before she can help it, she’s fallen in love. But the clock is ticking, and her sisters are growing restless. It becomes clear that the gravesite she chooses will hide a body no matter what happens; but if she betrays her family, will it be hers?

Review

Identical triplets, separated in the foster system, have now become a team. A team of serial killers. Sissy has always handled the clean up but now she has been given her own target. And she has chosen Edison. But, Sissy begins to get too close and the other sisters are not letting her forget her mission!

I think my problem with this book is I absolutely hated all of the characters. There was absolutely nothing at all which interested me. I also found them and the story very predictable. That being said, there was still something that kept me reading. The sisters interactions and the intensity of their plan is pretty extreme.

Need a good tale with murder ever present in the characters’ minds…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

Once We Were Home by Jennifer Rosner @macmillanaudio #audiobook #audiblebook #booktwitter #bookreview

Overview

This program features a bonus conversation between the author and narrators.

From Jennifer Rosner, National Jewish Book Award Finalist and author of The Yellow Bird Sings, comes a novel based on the true stories of children stolen in the wake of World War II.

Ana will never forget her mother’s face when she and her baby brother, Oskar, were sent out of their Polish ghetto and into the arms of a Christian friend. For Oskar, though, their new family is the only one he remembers. When a woman from a Jewish reclamation organization seizes them, believing she has their best interest at heart, Ana sees an opportunity to reconnect with her roots, while Oskar sees only the loss of the home he loves.

Roger grows up in a monastery in France, inventing stories and trading riddles with his best friend in a life of quiet concealment. When a relative seeks to retrieve him, the Church steals him across the Pyrenees before relinquishing him to family in Jerusalem.

Renata, a post-graduate student in archaeology, has spent her life unearthing secrets from the past—except for her own. After her mother’s death, Renata’s grief is entwined with all the questions her mother left unanswered, including why they fled Germany so quickly when Renata was a little girl.

Two decades later, they are each building lives for themselves, trying to move on from the trauma and loss that haunts them. But as their stories converge in Israel, in unexpected ways, they must each ask where and to whom they truly belong.

Beautifully evocative and tender, filled with both luminosity and anguish, Once We Were Home reveals a little-known history. Based on the true stories of children stolen during wartime, this heart-wrenching novel raises questions of complicity and responsibility, belonging and identity, good intentions and unforeseen consequences, as it confronts what it really means to find home.

Review

Roger has been sent to a monastery in France to protect him from the Nazis. Oscar and Renata have been sent away to be raised in the country by a totally different family, also, to save them from the Nazis. But, now the war is over and no one will relinquish these children for various reasons.

It would be so hard on some of these children to be gone and never remember their past. Oscar is a character in which my heart went out to, along with Roger, for different reasons. Each of these boys had different situations and different outcomes. And then there is Renata. Her situation when she had her own children broke my heart for her. I totally understand why she did not want them in the “community”. You will have to read this to find out!

I did fluctuate between 4 and 5 stars on this one. Mostly because there were some “flat” places. But it is very emotional so I rolled it all the way up.

The narrators, Gabra Zackman and Vikas Adams made this story come to life. I loved their tag team on the characters and sections of this novel m

Künstlers in Paradise by Cathleen Schine #booktwitter #audiobook #audiobookreview @macmillanaudio

Overview

There was a time when the family Künstler lived in the fairy-tale city of Vienna. Circumstances transformed that fairy tale into a nightmare, and in 1939 the Künstlers found their way out of Vienna and into a new fairy tale: Los Angeles, California, United States of America.

For years Mamie Künstler, ninety-three-years-old, as clever and glamorous as ever, has lived happily in her bungalow in Venice, California, with her inscrutable housekeeper and her gigantic St. Bernard dog. Their tranquility is upended when Mamie’s grandson, Julian, arrives from New York City. Like many a twenty-something, he has come to seek his fortune in Hollywood. But it is 2020, the global pandemic sweeps in, and Julian’s short visit suddenly has no end in sight.

Mamie was only eleven when the Künstlers escaped Vienna in 1939. They made their way, stunned and overwhelmed, to sunny, surreal Los Angeles, where they joined a colony of distinguished Jewish musicians, writers and intellectuals also escaping Hitler. Now, faced with months of lockdown and a willing listener, Mamie begins to tell Julian the buried stories of her early years in Los Angeles: her escapades with eminent émigrés like Arnold Schoenberg, Christopher Isherwood, Thomas Mann. Oh, and Greta Garbo. While the pandemic cuts Julian off from the life he knows, Mamie’s tales open up a world of lives that came before him. They reveal to him just how much the past holds of the future.

Cathleen Schine’s captivating and comedic twelfth novel explores exile, émigrés, movie stars, musicians, family bonds and the power of stories—both those we hand down and the ones held secretly in the heart.

A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

Overview

The Künstlers left Vienna in 1939 and made their way to Los Angeles. Mamie was eleven years old when she left everything she knew to begin a new life away from the Nazis. She has lived quietly in California and she is now ninety-three years old. She has taken a fall and hurt her wrist. Her grandson, Julian, has arrived to help her through her recovery. But then Covid hits and he is trapped with her through the lock-down. So, she begins to tell her wonderful story about her life.

Now…this book started out slow. I despised Julian almost from the get go. He did sort of redeem himself but he is the reason I almost abandoned this book. And boy…what a mistake that would have been, BECAUSE…then I would have missed Mamie and her stories, smart mouth and Julian getting his comeuppance!

Mamie has lived an amazing life and she slowly dribbles out her tale full of famous people and family secrets. And she takes no sass and no mistakes.

Mamie is one of my favorite characters ever! I could just picture her slamming that cane on the floor and yelling “Julian!” The narrator, Jesse Vilinsky nailed her! She was Mamie through and through! I cannot express this enough. Y’all need to listen to this because she truly brought Mamie to life for me.

Need a story which will make you laugh and cry all in the same sentence…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!

Earth’s the Right Place for Love by Elizabeth Berg @randomhouse #bookreview #booktwitter #literaryfiction

Overview

This beautiful new novel by the beloved author of Open House and Talk Before Sleep tells the story of two young people growing up in Mason, Missouri, and how Arthur Moses, a shy young man, becomes the wise and compassionate person listeners loved in The Story of Arthur Truluv.

Nola McCollum is the most desirable girl in Arthur’s class, and he is thrilled when they become friends. But Arthur wants far more than friendship. Unfortunately, Nola has a crush on the wrong Moses—Arthur’s older brother, Frank, who is busy pursuing his own love interest and avoiding the boys’ father, a war veteran with a drinking problem and a penchant for starting fights. When a sudden tragedy rocks the family’s world, Arthur struggles to come to terms with his grief. In the end, it is nature that helps him to understand how to go on, beyond loss, and create a life of forgiveness and empathy. But what can he do about Nola, who seems confused about what she wants in life, and only half aware of the one who loves her most?

Full of unforgettable characters and written with Elizabeth Berg’s characteristic warmth, humor, and insight into people, Earth’s the Right Place for Love is about the power of kindness, character, and family, and how love can grow when you least expect it.

Review

Arthur has fallen hard for Nola. But Nola only has eyes for Arthur’s brother Frank. So, Arthur strikes up a friendship with Nola. As hard as he tries, Nola is determined to stay friends. Then tragedy strikes Arthur’s household and his life is changed forever.

I love this series. Arthur is such a wonderful character. This novel is about his young life and the events which changed his family dynamics. But, as this novel brings to light, Arthur has always been a kind, sweet person. And he has always shown his ability to love even in the harshness of abuse.

This is not my favorite in this series. My favorite is the very first one, The Story of Arthur Truluv. So, if you get a chance, grab that one too. It is not necessary to read these in order. But I do believe the first one really endears the reader to Arthur. He is such a wonderful, kindhearted individual you do not want to miss!

Just One More by Annette Lyon #suspense #fiction #booktwitter #bookreview @penzlerpub

Overview

A librarian investigates her husband’s dark past and winds up dead. Now it’s up to her best friend to uncover the truth.

Becca’s life is turned upside down when she finds Jenn dead in the bathtub. Soon she begins to unspool the secrets Jenn kept in life, including a troubled marriage to Rick and two dead wives in his past. The more Becca learns, the more determined she becomes to get justice for Jenn, even if the clues surrounding her death aren’t quite adding up.…

Over a year before her death, Jenn begins to notice her husband acting strangely. Using her skills as a librarian, she digs into Rick’s past—and falls down a rabbit hole far deeper and darker than she bargained for. She’s already beaten the odds by living longer than his other dead wives. But now she fears her time is up.

This page-turning story of marriage, friendship, and motherhood is a first foray into thriller by USA Today bestseller Annette Lyon.

Overview

Jenn has finally met the person she wants to spend the rest of her life with. They marry and then things start to slowly fall apart. Jenn is a librarian and she begins to do research on her husband. She soon discovers that he is not the man she thought. He has a horrible past and now she must protect herself and her newborn baby.

This novel kept me intrigued from start to finish. I had no idea at first what actually happened. But, as the story unfolded, I had so many emotions! I wanted to beat up her husband so badly. I also wanted to grab Jenn and shake her and say “Stand up for yourself!” So, I will say this, the ending is a bit out of character for Jenn. This just didn’t sit too well with me. She is not the same someone portrayed throughout this book! But, you read this and let me know your thoughts.

Two Wars and a Wedding by Lauren Willig #historicalfiction #booktwitter #bookreview

Overview

Filled with vivid details, shocking truths, and two sly, strong women who bring panache and humor to every scene. I’m simply in awe of the masterful, magical way Lauren Willig makes history come alive.” — Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Magnolia Place

“A winning epic of war and friendship. Readers will devour this riveting tale.”–Publishers Weekly (starred review)

From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig: a dramatic coming-of-age story with a dual timeline and a single heroine—a bold and adventuring young woman who finds herself caught up in two very different wars on both sides of the Atlantic.

September 1896: An aspiring archaeologist, Smith College graduate Betsy Hayes travels to Athens, desperate to break into the male-dominated field of excavation. In the midst of the heat and dust of Greece she finds an unlikely ally in Charles, Baron de Robecourt, one of the few men who takes her academic passion seriously. But when a simmering conflict between Greece and Turkey erupts into open warfare, Betsy throws herself into the conflict as a nurse, not knowing that the decision will change her life forever—and cause a deep and painful rift with her oldest friend, Ava.

June 1898: Betsy has sworn off war nursing—but when she gets the word that her estranged friend Ava is headed to Cuba with Clara Barton and the Red Cross to patch up the wounded in the Spanish-American War, Betsy determines to stop her the only way she knows how: by joining in her place. Battling heat, disease, and her own demons, Betsy follows Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders straight to the heart of the fighting, where she is forced to confront her greatest fears to save both old friends and new….

Set during an electrifying era of nation-building, idealism, and upheaval, Two Wars and a Wedding is the tale of two remarkable women striving to make their place in a man’s world—an unforgettable saga of friendship, love, and fighting for what is right.

Review

Betsy is an ambitious archaeologist. She knows she can do the job she is just struggling with the men which think she can’t. Then she has a love interest which is not to her best advantage. But, this does not stop her. She falls for him hard and fast. This changes her stars and her complete direction of her life and dreams.

There is a lot I learned in this novel. I had no idea about many of the issues during the Spanish-American war. And the incompetence of the army medical teams really set me off! Betsy managed this like a pro and I applaud this character and her tenacity.

This is not my favorite book by this author and for the life of me I don’t know why. The setting is very unusual with the war in Cuba and the archaeological digs in Greece. Plus, Betsy is a very strong female character. She is amazing! So, it has all the earmarks of a 5 star read for me. I just felt something was missing. I will be honest, it has a lot of detail and the fluctuations between time periods could have been better. But you need to read this yourself and let me know.

Strangers in the Night by Heather Webb #historicalfiction #booktwitter #bookreview @harpercollins

Overview

It was the tumultuous romance that scandalized the world: Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner fought, loved, and lived life to the hilt. Now their unbridled story is brought vividly to life by Heather Webb, the bestselling author of Meet Me in Monaco and The Next Ship Home.

In the golden age of Hollywood, two of the brightest stars would define—and defy—an era…

She was the small-town southern beauty transformed into a Hollywood love goddess. He was the legendary crooner whose voice transfixed the world. They were Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. Separately they were irresistible; together they were an explosive combination.

Ava’s star is rising just as Frank’s career—and public image as a family man—is taking a hit. Gone are the days of the screaming bobbysoxers and chart-topping hits. Ava, however, finds herself gracing the front page of every tabloid in America. Jealousy and cheating abound, and when the two succumb to their temperaments and their vices, their happiness is threatened at every turn.

As the pair ride the rollercoaster of success and failure, passion and anger, they both wonder if the next turn will be the end of their careers, and most devastating of all—the end of all they’ve shared.

A captivating novel with a star-studded cast spanning continents and decades, Strangers in the Night brings to life the most riveting love story of the twentieth century.

Review

Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra had a special relationship. Each have their own issues, but put the two together and you have an explosion of emotions…anger, love, creativity and passion.

This novel is so well researched! And there is so much more I wanted to know. I knew very little about Frank and Ava. I knew a bit about each individually but I had no idea about their relationship. So, I found myself researching both of them as I read their story. Heather Webb has done an awesome job compiling their stormy and intense relationship.

Frank Sinatra was definitely an emotional mess. I had no idea how many times he threatened or tried suicide. This was just one of the many eye-opening revelations I discovered. This story is full of astonishing information.

Daughters of Nantucket

Author: Julie Gerstenblatt

Publication Date: March 14, 2023

ISBN: 9780778333425

Paperback Original

Publisher: MIRA

Price $19.99

Book Summary:

“Gerstenblatt’s distinctive tale, a triumph in storytelling, celebrates the courage and tenacity of women.” —Booklist, starred review

Set against Nantucket’s Great Fire of 1846, this sweeping, emotional novel brings together three courageous women battling to save everything they hold dear.

Nantucket in 1846 is an island set apart not just by its geography but by its unique circumstances. With their menfolk away at sea, often for years at a time, women here know a rare independence—and the challenges that go with it.

Eliza Macy is struggling to conceal her financial trouble as she waits for her whaling captain husband to return from a voyage. In desperation, she turns against her progressive ideals and targets Meg Wright, a pregnant free Black woman trying to relocate her store to Main Street. Meanwhile, astronomer Maria Mitchell loves running Nantucket’s Atheneum and spending her nights observing the stars, yet she fears revealing the secret wishes of her heart.

On a sweltering July night, a massive fire breaks out in town, quickly kindled by the densely packed wooden buildings. With everything they possess now threatened, these three very different women are forced to reevaluate their priorities and decide what to save, what to let go and what kind of life to rebuild from the ashes of the past.

Review

Meg, Eliza and Maria each have their own struggles. But, when fire ravages their precious island, they are thrown together. Each must prioritize what is precious in their lives and what to save.

This story starts a bit slow, but you are just getting to know the characters. Each character has their own issues. Some with race, forbidden love, and just plain life. I loved learning about Nantucket and the whaling industry during this time. How hard it was on families! Add in this terrible fire, which I knew nothing about, and this is a unique story!

This is a novel which should have been right up my alley….Nantucket in 1846! But, honestly, I think I just was not in the mood for this tale. So, read this and form your own opinion.

I Love It When You Lie

Author: Kristen Bird

Publication Date: March 14, 2023

ISBN: 9780778333432

Paperback Original

Publisher: MIRA

Price $18.99

Book Summary:

The Williams women don’t just keep secrets…

They bury them.

The three Williams girls are as close as sisters can be, and they also share one special trait in common: each of them has a man in her life that she could do without.

Tara, the pastor’s wife, has been stealing money from the church and would prefer that her husband stay out of it. Then there’s June, who would do anything to have a baby of her own, even if her husband is dead set against it. Clementine, the youngest, is entangled in an affair with her professor, a man whose behavior she’s starting to seriously question. Their sister-in-law Stephanie, an outsider, knows all the family dirt and is watching the three of them—and the men in their lives—closely.

When the woman who raised them, their beloved Gran, dies on the eve of her eightieth birthday, the Williams sisters return home to the Appalachian foothills to bury her. But their grandmother won’t be the only one they’ll put in a grave this weekend…because now someone has gone missing in the dark Appalachian woods.

And if Gran has taught them anything, it’s how to get rid of a good-for-nothin’ man.

“Exceptional…. This tale of sisterhood is un-put-downable.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“A wicked blend of family secrets, sibling resentment and small-town ways. Wondering how to get away with murder? The Williams sisters know.”
—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Irresistible and compulsive, this book is packed full of surprises.”
—Samantha Downing, internationally bestselling author of My Lovely Wife

Review

Tara, Clementine, June and their brother, Walker have had a tragic life. At the death of their parents, they were placed in foster care until their grandmother showed up to rescue them. They had never met Gran but she took them all in and raised them. Now, on the death of Gran, they have all returned back home. Each of their lives are different and they had no idea how much they needed each other until everything starts to fall apart.

This is a story in which you know someone or know a family very similar to this. I love when the characters are relatable. I knew everyone in this novel and they all live down the road. 😂. And for the life of me, I cannot tell you which character I liked the most. They are all flawed and have made terrible decisions. But, they are there for each other through it all!

Now, I don’t want to give away a spoiler, but the ending is so dang good. I swear I wanted to laugh, cry and tell them not to do it! But they did it anyway! Y’all need to read this to find out!

Homestead by Melinda Moustakis #booktwitter #bookreview #fiction #audiobook @macmillanaudio

Overview

From NATIONAL BOOK FOUNDATION 5 UNDER 35 HONOREE and FLANNERY O’CONNOR AWARD WINNER Melinda Moustakis, a debut novel set in Alaska, about the turbulent marriage of two unlikely homesteaders

“So good, so precise, so strong, and so deeply felt.” —Jess Walter, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Recommended for fans of Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone.” —Booklist (starred review)

Anchorage, 1956. When Marie and Lawrence first lock eyes at the Moose Lodge, they are immediately drawn together. But when they decide to marry, days later, they are more in love with the promise of homesteading than anything. For Lawrence, his parcel of 150 acres is an opportunity to finally belong in a world that has never delivered on its promise. For Marie, the land is an escape from the empty future she sees spinning out before her, and a risky bet is better than none at all. But over the next few years, as they work the land in an attempt to secure a deed to their homestead, they must face everything they don’t know about each other. As the Territory of Alaska moves toward statehood and inexorable change, can Marie and Lawrence create something new, or will they break apart trying?

Immersive and wild-hearted, joyfully alive to both the intimate and the elemental, Homestead is an unflinching portrait of a new state and of the hard-fought, hard-bitten work of making a family.

Review

Marie and Lawerence meet and are immediately drawn to each other. They marry within a few days of meeting. Marie wants land and Lawerence really wants a help mate. This is not actually the way to start off a marriage. Can they overcome and stay together through all the hardships Alaska homesteading has to offer?

Marie and Lawrence definitely had a rough go of it. They lived in an old bus for their first year, they lost a child and then there are so many secrets! Lawerence has a past he does not want to share and he does not want to put Marie’s name on his land. So, there are quite a few issues in their marriage. I did feel this plot is a little thin. I wanted a bit more to occur. But…I do I love this setting. This is what made this story for me. I loved reading about the landscape, the stars and of course, the bears!

I did enjoy this narrator. Ariel Blake did a wonderful job!
