Uncultured: A Memoir by Daniella Mestyanek Young #audiobook #bookreview #nonfiction

Overview

“Although this is Mestyanek Young’s first time narrating, listeners will appreciate hearing this deeply personal story told by the author herself. Share with fans of Tara Westover’s Educated and Deborah Feldman’s Unorthodox. Memoir readers will want to check this one out.” —Library Journal

“A painful and propulsive memoir delivered in the honest tones of a woman who didn’t always think she’d live to tell her story.” —The New York Times

This program is read by the author.

In the vein of Educated and The Glass Castle, Daniella Mestyanek Young’s Uncultured is more than a memoir about an exceptional upbringing, but about a woman who, no matter the lack of tools given to her, is determined to overcome.

Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

At fifteen years old, fed up with The Family and determined to build a better and freer life for herself, Daniella escapes to Texas. There, she bravely enrolls herself in high school and excels, later graduating as valedictorian of her college class, then electing to join the military to begin a career as an intelligence officer, where she believes she will finally belong.

But she soon learns that her new world—surrounded by men on the sands of Afghanistan—looks remarkably similar to the one she desperately tried to leave behind.

Told in a beautiful, propulsive voice and with clear-eyed honesty, Unculturedexplores the dangers unleashed when harmful group mentality goes unrecognized, and is emblematic of the many ways women have to contort themselves to survive.

Review

This is a story in which I had to let marinate for a while. It is hard to process because it is hard to believe that this can happen, does happen and is still happening.

Daniella is truly an exceptional woman. The trauma she has experienced is heart wrenching. And to know, all the adults around her failed her. But…they were brainwashed too…still doesn’t make it any easier to process. She then proceeds to be outstanding in other areas of her life and to be a leader of men in a the man’s world of the US Army.

In this book she is humble, tough, smart and breakable all at the same time. I had a ton of questions while reading this and I headed to her TikTok page and proceeded to watch her videos for hours teaching me about cults. I have a better understanding but little patience with these people.

Daniella narrates this book herself and I do not think anyone else could have done it! She is amazing.

This is a book that TikTok made me buy and you should run…don’t walk…and get it today!

One Big Happy Family by Susan Mallery #bookreview @harlequinbooks

Overview

Susan Mallery, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Boardwalk Bookshop, returns with the joyful and utterly irresistible story of a mother who couldn’t love her kids more but hopes that, just this once, they please don’t come home for Christmas.  Perfect for fans of Mary Kay Andrews and Julie Murphy!

Julie Parker’s kids are her greatest gift. Still, she’s not exactly heartbroken when they ask to skip a big Christmas. Her son, Nick, is taking a belated honeymoon with his bride, Blair, while her daughter, Dana, will purge every reminder of the guy who dumped her. Again. Julie feels practically giddy for one-on-one holiday time with Heath, the (much) younger man she’s secretly dating.

But her plans go from cozy to chaotic when Nick and Dana plead for Christmas at the family cabin in memory of their late father, Julie’s ex. She can’t refuse, even though she dreads their reactions to her new man when they realize she’s been hiding him for months.

As the guest list grows in surprising ways, from Blair’s estranged mom to Heath’s precocious children, Julie’s secret is one of many to be unwrapped. Over this delightfully complicated and very funny Christmas, she’ll discover that more really is merrier, and that a big, happy family can become bigger and happier, if they let go of old hurts and open their hearts to love.

Don’t miss Susan Mallery’s brand new novel, BEACH READS, a dazzling, clever and poignant story about the family we’re born into—and the one we create for ourselves, coming March 2025!

Review

I saved this one for closer to Christmas to get me in the holiday mood. I am a BAH HUMBUG. But I do love a good Christmas read!

These characters are fantastic and I enjoyed the family drama and all the little quips! Don’t we all have family drama on one of the best days of the year! 😜.

Invisible Helix by Keigo Higashino #bookreview @minotaurbooks #minotaurinfluencers

Overview

Detective Galileo, Keigo Higashino’s best loved character from The Devotion of Suspect X, returns in a case where hidden history, and an impossible crime, are linked by nearly invisible threads in surprising ways.

The body of a young man is found floating in Tokyo Bay. But his death was no accident—Ryota Uetsuji was shot. He’d been reported missing the week before by his live-in girlfriend Sonoka Shimauchi, but when detectives from the Homicide Squad go to interview her, she is nowhere to be found. She’s taken time off from work, clothes and effects are missing from the apartment she shared. And when the detectives learn that she was the victim of domestic abuse, they presume that she was the killer. But her alibi is airtight—she was hours away in Kyoto when Ryota disappeared, forcing Detectives Kusanagi and Utsumi to restart their investigation.

But if Sonoko didn’t kill her abusive lover, then who did? A thin thread of association leads them to their old consultant, brilliant physicist Manabu Yukawa, known in the department as “Detective Galileo.” With Sonoko still missing, the detectives investigate other threads of association—an eccentric artist, who was Sonoko’s mother figure after her own single mother passed; and an older woman who is the owner of a hostess club. And how is Sonoko continuing to stay one step ahead of the police searching for her? It’s up to Galileo to find the nearly hidden threads of history and coincidence that connect the people around the bloody murder- which, surprisingly, connect to his own traumatic past—to unravel not merely the facts of the crime but the helix that ties them all together

Review

This is an intricate tale with a unique story that keeps you captive!

Sonoko broke my heart in so many ways. She has just lost her mother and now she is living with her abusive boyfriend. Luckily, one of her mother’s friends figures out what is going on and works to get Sonoko out of the situation. But that is not the only one that has her back!

I loved how this tale twisted around this family. The way this novel begins is with someone leaving a baby at an orphanage. This secret follows the characters throughout and it becomes a guessing game.

Now, since this is translated from Japanese, there were a few places where it was a bit choppy, especially in the conversations. This is minor, just something I picked up on.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish! I mean…who doesn’t love a book set on a remote island in Scotland! Not only that…the intensity and the mystery just keep swirling around. As the reader, you are questioning your very own existence by the time Alice Feeney is finished. Such a twisted read, especially with the characters on the island. They truly keep you (and Grady!) on your toes!

As with all of Alice Feeney’s books, the ending is a bit out there. So, be prepared! Her books never end the way you expect! This one is definitely one you don’t want to miss!

The narrators, Richard Armitage  Tuppence Middleton…OMG! They knocked my socks off. Fantastic!

Booked For Murder by P. J. Nelson @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers #bookreview

Overview

In this atmospheric southern cozy debut, Madeline Brimley returns to the bookstore she inherited, discovering that small towns hold deadly secrets.

Madeline Brimley left small town Georgia many years ago to go to college and pursue her dreams on the stage. Her dramatic escapades are many but success has eluded her, leaving her at loose ends. But then she gets word that not only has her beloved, eccentric Aunt Rose passed, but she’s left Madeline her equally eccentric bookstore housed in an old Victorian mansion in the small college town of Enigma. But when she arrives in her beat-up Fiat to claim The Old Juniper Bookstore, and restart her life, Madeline is faced with unexpected challenges. The gazebo in the back yard is set ablaze and a late night caller threatens to burn the whole store down if she doesn’t leave immediately.

But Madeline Brimley, not one to be intimidated, ignores the threats and soldiers on. Until there’s another fire and a murder in the store itself. Now with a cloud of suspicion falling over her, it’s up to Madeline to untangle the skein of secrets and find the killer before she herself is the next victim.

Review

Madeline has just inherited her aunt’s house and book store. When she arrives at her aunt’s house, she is bombarded with memories. But then she smells smoke. Someone has set the gazebo on fire. Madeline soon realizes she may have an unforeseen battle on her hands.

Madeline figures out real quick that everything is not going to be as she remembers it from her youth. Right off the bat she begins to have threats and then someone is murdered in her new home. This sends her and a couple of her friends on the hunt for a killer.

All of these characters are wonderful. I loved Madeline and all the cast. And believe me, it is a group of southern folk and they will keep you on your toes!

I enjoyed this tale. It is full of drama, great setting and it is just an all around good who-done-it.

The Fake Santa Apology Tour by Julie Olivia #audiobook #audiobookreview @dreamscapeaudio

Overview

Short-term flings with good looking Santas are kinda my thing.

After my latest holly jolly break-up with the fake mall Santa Claus of my dreams, I escaped to a small town winter wonderland in the middle of nowhere. But it’s just my luck that I run into the only person in the world who could get my Christmas lights in a twist: freaking Nicholas Ryan.

A man I haven’t seen in twenty years and who I never wanted to see again. Except now he’s my hot bartender, complete with a silver-fox beard, a twinkle in his eye, and looking a lot like my one true kryptonite: Santa Claus.

It’s five days until Christmas, I’m stuck in a snowy small town straight out of a Hallmark movie, and all I want is to avoid the Grinch who stole all my Christmases and pretend that our chemistry is simply just the magic of Christmas in the air.

Review

When Birdie May was young she tried to slip a note to a mall Santa. She had a special request. A young elf, Nick, helps her. But things go awry and Birdie May feels like Nick curses her future…yes you heard me. He cursed her future Christmas’

Fast forward a few years and Birdie May is a famous author. Every year she travels to a very cold place to write her next Christmas novel. Well, this year, she runs into…you guessed it…her old nemesis Nick!

This is an adorable, fast paced story. Yes, it is predictable…yes it is a love story…but it is flirty, funny and will get you in the Christmas spirit.

The narrator, Isabelle Turner, is very enjoyable.

When I first started this book, I immediately loved Addison. She is no nonsense, she is smart, and she has herself in a mess. There is something about Addison that I felt sorry for, but yet I knew that was misplaced… or was it? The ending tells a bit of a different story.

This novel has a lot of moving parts and it will keep you on your toes with all of the questions about the past!

OK, y’all, I have never read this author before. I’m gonna have to pick up some of her books. I enjoyed the movement of this novel. I enjoyed the characters. And I definitely enjoyed the thrill. This ending will have you wanting to punch somebody, just letting you know. So be ready. 😉

The Stolen Sisters (The World War Two Orphanage) by Ann Bennett @bookouture #audiobook #historicalfiction

Overview

The lorry is ready to take you to the train station,’ the soldier announced, and Martha clung to her little sister. ‘I want to stay with her,’ Martha said, voice shaking. ‘It is not possible. You belong in the Reich,’ the officer said. ‘And she does not.’

Poland, 1944 When twelve-year-old Martha and her little sister Johanna are snatched while out shopping for food and pushed into an army truck with a swastika on the door, they are heartbroken. Terrified they will never see their mother again, the little girls cling to each other as the truck full of stolen children rumbles through the countryside.

But worse is yet to come. When they arrive at their strange new home, tears streaming down their cheeks, Martha is sent into a separate room. As she is measured, her blonde hair and blue eyes exclaimed over, she doesn’t realise she has seen her sister for the last time. Later, as she sobs alone in the chilly dormitory, her only crumb of comfort is the memory of a kind German nurse who took a photo of the two sisters, and promised Martha she will do what she can to find Johanna.

Berlin, 2005 In her cosy sitting room, seventy-year-old Martha freezes. The woman on her television talking about lost children is someone she could never forget. Margarete Weiss is the nurse who took the photo of her and Johanna, the photo with the secret message on the back…

Martha has never been able to find her younger sister and has buried herself in work so as not to be haunted by the ghosts of her past. But, seeing Margarete’s blue eyes again, a shoot of hope takes root in her heart. Margarete may not have been able to prevent the sisters being separated during the war. But might she be able to help Martha find out what happened to Johanna now?

A beautiful and emotional listen about finding hope in the darkest corners.

Review

This is a tale which breaks your heart and then gives you hope!

Martha and Joanna were snatched off the streets of Poland when they were just young girls. These sisters were taken by the Nazis to be tested to see if they could be aryan enough to be adopted by loyal Nazis. Needless to say their lives took a different path.

There is a lot that happened to these two little girls in a short amount of time and this lasted their whole lives. I love how the author reels you in and keeps the intensity and emotions up all the way till the end. And yes it is heartbreaking and terrifying to read what they go through but the ending is worth every minute! This would make a great movie!

What an amazing read! I have not read Book 1 and I will remedy that soon!

The narrator, Daphne Kouma, could not have been better. I love a narrator that can do it all!
