The Sound of Glass by Karen White

Overview

The New York Times bestselling author of A Long Time Gone now explores a Southern family’s buried history, which will change the life of the woman who unearths it, secret by shattering secret.

It has been two years since the death of Merritt Heyward’s husband, Cal, when she receives unexpected news—Cal’s family home in Beaufort, South Carolina, bequeathed by Cal’s reclusive grandmother, now belongs to Merritt.

Charting the course of an uncertain life—and feeling guilt from her husband’s tragic death—Merritt travels from her home in Maine to Beaufort, where the secrets of Cal’s unspoken-of past reside among the pluff mud and jasmine of the ancestral Heyward home on the Bluff. This unknown legacy, now Merritt’s, will change and define her as she navigates her new life—a new life complicated by the arrival of her too young stepmother and ten-year-old half-brother.

Soon, in this house of strangers, Merritt is forced into unraveling the Heyward family past as she faces her own fears and finds the healing she needs in the salt air of the Low Country.

Review

I think this is the best Karen White book I have read. She has always been a favorite, but she has out done herself with this novel.  The characters are so enjoyable and the setting is so rich it just envelopes you the more you read.

Merritt inherits her deceased husband’s family home with all its history and mystery. She is a woman damaged and looking for healing.  She finds more than she bargained for when her step mother and little brother show up to stay.

This novel is very well researched and I enjoyed learning about nutshell studies, an added plus to this story.

Each character holds a different secret the slowly unfolds and captivates the reader with every turn of the page.

Karen White knows how to tell a story that will stay with you long after it is finished!

I received the book from Netgalley for an honest review.

Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem by D.E. Haggerty

OVERVIEW

My name is Izzy. I drink too much, am clumsier than a newborn foal, and my brain-to-mouth filter often malfunctions. My daredevil husband killed himself in a parachuting accident five years ago and my best friend Jack has decided it’s time I jump back in the dating pool. He’s perfectly happy to throw me in if I don’t listen. Just when things in the dating world start to heat up, my grandma dies. Only her knitting group of Jessica Fletcher wannabes is sure it’s murder. I’m not convinced but I’m always up for a bit of excitement as long as it doesn’t lead to a night in jail. Well, more than one night anyway. Will I miss my chance at love because I’m chasing imaginary killers? Did someone really kill grandma or am I and my merry band of geriatric thieves imagining things?

REVIEW

This is a fall off the couch funny read!!

Izzy is a fabulous character. She kept me in stitches throughout the whole book. With her mooning a restaurant…accidentally of course, and her unstoppable mouth, she is a character I will not soon forget. And her police officer beau is OOOOLALA!!

If you like Janet  Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, this book is for you. A really good read if you need a funny, relaxing story.

The Marriage Game: A Novel Of Queen Elizabeth I by Alison Weir

Overview

In this compelling novel of Tudor drama and suspense, acclaimed author Alison Weir brings to life one of England’s most scandalous royal love affairs: the romance between the “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth I and her courtier Lord Robert Dudley.

Only twenty-five and newly crowned, Elizabeth vows to rule the country as both queen and king. But her counselors continually press her to form an advantageous marriage and produce an heir. Though none of the suitors have yet worked their way to her throne, the dashing—though married—Lord Robert lays claim to Elizabeth’s heart. Their flagrant flirting, their unescorted outings, and the appointment of Lord Robert to Master of Horse inspire whispers through the court, and even rumors that Elizabeth has secretly given birth to Lord Robert’s child.

Events take a dark turn when Robert’s wife is found dead. Universal shock is followed by accusations of murder. Despite the scandal, Elizabeth and Robert manage to navigate the choppy political, economic, and religious waters around them. But the greatest obstacle to marriage between the Queen and her true love may come not from outside forces, but from within.

With intricate period detail and captivating prose, Alison Weir explores one of history’s most provocative “Did they or didn’t they?” debates. The Marriage Game maneuvers through the alliances, duplicities, intrigue, and emotions of a woman intent on sovereignty—over her country and herself.

Review

This is one of my favorite time periods. Queen Elizabeth I was an exceptional woman. She was a strong, smart leader and this book enhances that truth.

Queen Elizabeth’s parliament and counsellors insisted that she marry for various reasons.  Two of the main reasons were for an heir and because a woman is not strong enough to rule alone (boy! Did she prove them wrong!). She fought them tooth and nail all through her reign. She would consent then changed her mind….again and again.

Alison Weir paints a wonderful picture of this time and of the love between the Queen and her Master of Horse, Lord Robert Dudley.  However, this is a story just about Queen Elizabeth’s marriage dealings. The subject was a little monotonous, and if I thought that I can only imagine how the Queen felt.

I received this novel from Netgalley for an honest review.

She has lived the unfinished life of any number of women in their sixties. Edith discovers herself in this search, a different woman than she’s ever imagined herself to be.

Review

Edith’s life suddenly takes a tragic turn. Her husband has died of a heart attack. The family drama that ensues is fascinating for sure!!

This is an in depth tale with lots of questions to be guessed. Do you really know someone, even after 40 years?

The writing could have been a little more smooth and less choppy. But, it is a story that should not be missed!

About the Author

After graduating from Willamette University, Jo spent the most of next thirty years teaching, counseling, mothering, wifing and of course, writing.

Her writing first appeared in small literary magazines and professional publications. Since retirement, she has had time to write four novels and two screenplays. The first book used her teaching life as inspiration and served as a way to leave a profession she loved. The second story focused on her then-prodigal son, the hockey player. She’s quite sure he is relieved that it has not yet been published. Her third novel, Uprush, is an intimate, almost true, story of four middle-aged women lot like her own long-time friends. Graffiti Grandma examines the life of an elderly woman and the underworld of the homeless. Her next book, tells of Edith who wakes up one morning to find she is a widow.

Tension sizzles in this new book in the One-Eyed Jacks series by New York Times bestseller Cindy Gerard: a sexy, pulse-pounding story featuring special ops agent Jamie Cooper and a female cyber analyst as they fight for justice and fall in love.

No commitments, no promises, no looking back. Those are her rules. They used to be his rules, too. In the wake of a sniper attack that leaves a close friend clinging to life, the duo is pegged to undertake the One-Eyed Jacks’ latest security mission alone—an assignment that leads them to a top-secret desert military facility. Almost immediately, the sexual tension that has been brewing for months erupts, blindsiding Rhonda and Jamie with the intensity of their feelings. They try to play it cool, but when an elite terrorist team makes the future uncertain, they ask themselves: is it now or never?

Review

If you need a good, quick read, this is it. This is a beach read and a half!!

The characters are perfect together. Rhonda and Jamie meld well together and really keep the story flowing. Rhonda, with her angora sweaters and Jamie, with his VERY masculine ways…OOOOLALA!!

The tale is very predictable and not real unique. But, it is action packed and entertaining nonetheless.  With all the shoot outs and covert action, it is a mover and a shaker!

Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear

Overview

In the third novel of this bestselling series, London investigator Maisie Dobbs faces grave danger as she returns to the site of her most painful WWI memories to resolve the mystery of a pilot’s death

Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone. Alexander McCall Smith’s Precious Ramotswe. Every once in a while, a detective bursts on the scene who captures readers’ hearts–and imaginations–and doesn’t let go. And so it was with Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs, who made her debut just two years ago in the eponymously titled first book of the series, and is already on her way to becoming a household name.

A deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world.

In accepting the assignment, Maisie finds her spiritual strength tested, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission also brings her together once again with her college friend Priscilla Evernden, who served in France and who lost three brothers to the war–one of whom, it turns out, had an intriguing connection to the missing Ralph Lawton.

Following on the heels of the triumphant Birds of a Feather, Pardonable Lies is the most compelling installment yet in the chronicles of Maisie Dobbs, “a heroine to cherish” (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review).

Review

I reviewed Birds of a Feather – book 2 yesterday. I actually read, not listened to Pardonable Lies. I have to say, I enjoy listening to this series more. I think the narrator does a great job. I caught myself using her voices for some of the characters as I was reading.

I do not know if that is the reason I did not enjoy this book as well as the others. Possibly! However, this one slowed down a good bit in the middle and lost its umph!

Maisie is still the strong female lead you expect from the first books. However, the story fishtailed for me and became low-key.

It is still a comfortable read, just not as enjoyable as the first two books. Still want to head over to the fourth book.

Christmas in March NEW TECNIQUE

I found this technique in the Spring issue of Card Magazine. Here is the article.

I found it easier to wipe the embossing powder off with a paint brush and not a paper towel. I had better control. Also, I like the layering in the magazine better than what I did. I am going to attempt this again. I do like the non conformity of the results.

Thanks for stopping by!!!
