The Good Fight by Julianna Keyes – Book Spotlight

The Good Fight

By Julianna Keyes

Genre: Contemporary romance

I was born a fighter. You had to be, to survive in Camden. Lucky for me, I loved it. The thrill, the pain, the glory. Until one night things went too far and I almost lost my ticket out.

So I swore off fighting. Never again. No matter how much I wanted it.

I went to college. Got a degree. A job on Wall Street. Yet I still wasn’t smart enough to stay away. So now I’m back. And it’s just as bad as I remember.

Enter Dr. Susan Jones, superstar neurosurgeon. She’s brilliant, she’s sexy and she’s a pain in my ass. I can’t get enough and she’s too busy for a relationship. She wants to hook up, get off, go home. She doesn’t have time for a thug from Camden. But she keeps coming back.

This place brings out the worst in people. Every day it threatens the project I’m working on, the plans I’m making. Every day it drags me down just a little more, until the hands I vowed to keep clean start itching to get dirty.

If I don’t start fighting for what I want, I’ll wind up with nothing, and I didn’t come back to Camden for nothing. I came back to start something. And when people hurt the things I care about, the gloves come off.

Author Bio

Julianna Keyes is a Canadian writer who has lived on both coasts and several places in between. She’s been skydiving, bungee jumping and white water rafting, but nothing thrills—or terrifies—her as much as the blank page.  In addition to The Good Fight, she is the author of four contemporary romances: Just Once, the story of a world weary socialite and a stubborn ranch foreman; Going the Distance, a love story set in China between a kindergarten ESL teacher and a former army interrogator; Time Served, the tale of an ambitious young lawyer whose perfect world is jeopardized when she reunites with her ex-con ex-boyfriend; and In Her Defense, in which a ruthless young lawyer realizes there’s more to life than being the best…right? Her first New Adult romance, Undecided, in which a reformed bad girl moves in with the campus heartthrob and inadvertently falls for his cocky best friend, was published in April 2016.

A Place We All Know by Kevin Winter

Overview

In A Place We All Know, Kevin Winter has compiled seven of his most vivid and engaging short stories, each firmly rooted in the culture and character of north Mississippi. There’s something for everyone here, as the author immediately plunges you into the immersive environment of the fictitious town of Millwood Branch and Hickahala County in his most expansive exploration of that world to date in Me and Miss Rosie. Commercial airline pilot Eric Johnston is a man searching for a home, a place in which he can attempt to piece back together his fractured life. In Millwood Branch, he not only finds a forever home, but also a very unlikely friend that helps him navigate a course of healing, self-forgiveness, and redemption. This charming and indelible novella has never before been made available and is exclusive to this lovely collection of short fiction. And there’s more here to enjoy. Come meet the tragic and resilient Lana Jones Carmichael in Goodnight Young Miss Lana Jones, a story that brings to life the idea of undying love. In From the Backs of Four Shop-Rite Bags, you’ll meet the hilarious, incomparable Maude McBeene as she leads a backwoods attempt to avoid a catastrophe of worldwide proportions. The scenery pulls you right into these unforgettable characters’ world. You can almost feel yourself driving on the gravel surface of Bullfrog Road or hiking up on Muddy Pine Ridge. Whether you’re looking for something quick and light to read in your easy chair or front porch swing or a long read to get you through that beach vacation, you’re sure to find a story here to fit the bill.

Review

This is a read to savor. Just sit on your porch or your favorite reading spot,  sip sweet tea  and lose your self in the tales of the south.

Most of you know…I am not a huge fan of short stories.  This book has changed my mind!

Each tale is different and unique. Every character is rich and appealing. If you know the south at all….we definitely have our “characters”. I see many “real-life” people in these stories. This just made each story so legitimate to me. I could just picture the people and the scenery.

My favorite  is Me and Miss Rosie.  I think this one should be a novel. Miss Rosie is a treat! She is very much like many older southern belles…in other words, a little ornery, opinionated  and demanding. I also enjoyed Goodnight Young Miss Lana Jones. This one is very sorrowful and heart wrenching.

I told you each story was unique…there is also one about zombies….so something for everyone in this collection.

Kevin Winter is extremely talented and I look forward to many more stories from this young man!

Just a few quotes I loved!

“They just kept looking as if they could smell city in my clothes.”(I know this look….I think I have given it a few times!)

“You’re in the ICU at Methodist and for a bunch of non-immersers they’re pretty good folks.”(this one cracked me up!!!)

About the author

Kevin Winter lives and writes in north Mississippi. His short stories have appeared in numerous online and print publications including Bartleby Snopes, The Medulla Review, Pantheon Magazine, The Battered Suitcase, and The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature. He and his wife, Haley, have two boys, Hudson and Jake, and one rescue dog named Charlie. With his writing, Kevin hopes to highlight the warmth, charm, and uniqueness of his home state and to give back to the place that has given so much to him and his family. Currently, he is marketing his collection of short fiction, A Place We All Know, and working on his second novel, The Two Black Hands of James Carter McMann, to be set in the compelling world of Hickahala County, Mississippi.

The One Man by Andrew Gross

OVERVIEW

1944. Physics professor Alfred Mendl is separated from his family and sent to the men’s camp, where all of his belongings are tossed on a roaring fire. His books, his papers, his life’s work. The Nazis have no idea what they have just destroyed. And without that physical record, Alfred is one of only two people in the world with his particular knowledge. Knowledge that could start a war, or end it.

Nathan Blum works behind a desk at an intelligence office in Washington, DC, but he longs to contribute to the war effort in a more meaningful way, and he has a particular skill set the U.S. suddenly needs. Nathan is fluent in German and Polish, he is Semitic looking, and he proved his scrappiness at a young age when he escaped from the Polish ghetto. Now, the government wants him to take on the most dangerous assignment of his life: Nathan must sneak into Auschwitz, on a mission to find and escape with one man.

The One Man, a historical thriller from New York Times bestseller Andrew Gross, is a deeply affecting, unputdownable series of twists and turns through a landscape at times horrifyingly familiar but still completely compelling.

REVIEW

As most of you know, WWII is one of my favorite time periods. So, this book had me hooked from the very first. The majority of this book takes place inside Auschwitz, which is harrowing enough. Then add Nathan’s mission, sneaking into Auschwitz to rescue a professor, and you have a tale which is agonizing and chilling!

There were many places I literally had to put the book down and breathe a second. The suspense which runs rampant throughout the novel kept me in knots. To say it is intense is an understatement.

It is technical in many places, especially when the professor is trying to save his work in a very usual manner. This did not take away from the read at all. It added to the understanding of the mission and the terrifying way the prisoners of the death camps were forced to live.

I am not one to give away a spoiler and I really want to with this book. There are so many twists and turns it is hard not to give something away. I think this is one of the best books by Andrew Gross I have ever read.
I received this novel from Netgalley for a honest review

New fun bookmark

I just could not resist this stamp set from The Stamps of Life.  I decided to make a fun book mark. The images are embossed in gold powder.  I used different inks on the back ground and sprayed with glimmer mist. The star is chipboard and also sprayed with glimmer mist. The boarder is dotted with a gold paint pen and then …who can resist adding stickles. I always have a hard time when things are not straight….or lined up. This is completely out of my comfort zone. However, I am kind of liking the NON SYMMETRY…or the messy look…..so not my forte!!

The Gingerbread Collection by Victor A. Davis

Overview

When two children sneak into a candy factory to steal sweets, they risk capture by the dreaded superintendent, the Candy Man. In the title story, Gingerbread, Victor A. Davis brings all the force of the contemporary literary short story to bear on this reimagining of Peter Rabbit. In this and other stories, he lures you in to the many worlds of his darkly colorful imagination. From a touching scene at an ordinary diner to the moment man first tamed fire, he surprises. From the travelogues of Patagonian and Peruvian wanderers to the emotional forces hiding in a young boy’s closet at night, he entreats.

Review

This is an enjoyable, suspense filled collection of short stories. If you follow this blog at all, you know short stories are not my favorite. I feel they fall short…of something. These stories weave a tale not to be forgotten. The characters are strong and the tales leave you wanting more.

The Night at the Lake is my favorite.  I was mesmerized by the story and the prose. I really hope the author chooses to extend this tale in some form or fashion.

These stories had me holding my breath and then SOMETIMES…breathing a sigh of relief.

A Fragile Will by Glen Ebisch

A Fragile Will

By Glen Ebisch

Genre: Women’s Fiction

Publisher: Red Adept Publishing

When high school English teacher Cassandra Reilly is laid off, she takes a poorly paying part-time job at a local nursing home to make ends meet. Her employment problems may be solved when one of her patients passes away after naming her in his will as the director of a new literary research center. But Cassie isn’t certain she can handle the position, and her doubts increase when she receives a threat against her life.

The lawyer who handles the will proves to be a source of support and comfort, and Cassie hopes their friendship will deepen into love. As the danger increases and Cassie faces her doubts about her own abilities, she begins to develop a new strength of character that will help her achieve her life’s goals.

 Review

Cassie is an out of work English teacher. She has taken a temporary job in a nursing home. When one of her residents passes away it changes her life drastically.

I enjoyed many aspects of this read. I especially loved  the  references to wonderful classics. Great Expectations, Oliver Twist just to name a few. Cassie is a great female lead. She is down on her luck but manages to overcome many obstacles. Her success is hard won which makes her such a strong, outstanding woman! I love strong female characters!

This is a good tale with a winding path. However, it is overly dramatic in places and the conversations are a little stilted. This really does not detract from the story. The novel moves quickly and entertaining till the end.

The Summer That Melted Everything

OVERVIEW

Fielding Bliss has never forgotten the summer of 1984: the year a heat wave scorched Breathed, Ohio. The year he became friends with the devil.

Sal seems to appear out of nowhere – a bruised and tattered thirteen-year-old boy claiming to be the devil himself answering an invitation. Fielding Bliss, the son of a local prosecutor, brings him home where he’s welcomed into the Bliss family, assuming he’s a runaway from a nearby farm town.

When word spreads that the devil has come to Breathed, not everyone is happy to welcome this self-proclaimed fallen angel. Murmurs follow him and tensions rise, along with the temperatures as an unbearable heat wave rolls into town right along with him. As strange accidents start to occur, riled by the feverish heat, some in the town start to believe that Sal is exactly who he claims to be. While the Bliss family wrestles with their own personal demons, a fanatic drives the town to the brink of a catastrophe that will change this sleepy Ohio backwater forever.

Review

I do not even know where to start. This is a very profound read. To be honest, I almost quit reading it in the beginning. I was a little confused…the devil, a little boy, what??? But, the prose kept me reading. Then, I was vested in the characters and the amazement began.

This story is a multilevel tale about family dynamics, loss, revelations and regret. Sal shows up out of the blue. He says it is due to an invitation for the devil. Sal is the devil or he claims to be. His arrival sends the town of Breathed, Ohio into a downward spiral.

This novel is full of symbolism. I usually never look for symbolism but this one hits you upside the head with a brick. I see real genius in this writing. However, the story did not flow as well as I wanted it to. There were places I was a little confused. The prose kept me reading. Sal, Grand and Fielding are amazing characters and the tale just keeps unwinding to a dark tragedy not soon forgotten.

I believe this author has a true talent. I look forward to her next work!!

I received this novel form Netgalley for a honest review.
