Eight Perfect Hours by Lia Louis @atriabooks #romance #fiction #bookreview

Overview

I read Eight Perfect Hours in one sitting, in four perfect hours, because I couldn’t bear to put it down without knowing the ending. Lia Louis has become a must-buy author for me.” —Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author

In this romantic and heartwarming novel, two strangers meet in chance circumstances during a blizzard and spend one perfect evening together, thinking they’ll never see each other again. But fate seems to have different plans. From the acclaimed author of the “swoon-worthy…rom-com” (The Washington PostDear Emmie Blue.

On a snowy evening in March, thirty-something Noelle Butterby is on her way back from an event at her old college when disaster strikes. With a blizzard closing off roads, she finds herself stranded, alone in her car, without food, drink, or a working charger for her phone.

All seems lost until Sam Attwood, a handsome American stranger also trapped in a nearby car, knocks on her window and offers assistance. What follows is eight perfect hours together, until morning arrives and the roads finally clear. The two strangers part, positive they’ll never see each other again but fate, it seems, has a different plan. As the two keep serendipitously bumping into one another, they begin to realize that perhaps there truly is no such thing as coincidence.

With plenty of charming twists and turns and Lia Louis’s “bold, standout voice” (Gillian McAllister, author of The Good Sister), Eight Perfect Hours is a gorgeously crafted novel that will make you believe in the power of fate.

Review

Noelle is stranded on the highway. Her phone is dead and her mother is alone. She is completely stressing! Until a handsome American, Sam, knocks on her window to check on her. This leads to 8 hours together…stuck…these are the best 8 hours of Noelle’s sad life. When Sam and Noelle part the next morning, they know they will never see each other again. But, fate has a way of intervening.

Noelle is a person who tries to be the best for everyone. She is the full time caretaker of her mother and it is completely derailing her life. She is giving up so much to be everything to everyone.

Sam is an adventurer. He is strong and smart. As these two slowly realize they are meant to be together, it brings out their strengths. Especially Noelle!

This looks like a Christmas romance, but it is not. It is winter tale about two random people who keep randomly running into each other! It is adorable and perfect for a cold winter night! I laughed out loud in several places…especially with Noelle’s brother. You need to read this to find out!

Need a sweet romance with fabulous characters…this is it! Grab your copy today!

I Am Not Who You Think I Am By Eric Rickstad @blackstoneaudio @ericrickstad #audiobook #audiblebook #5starreview #thriller

Overview

Wicked and smart. Everything you want in a great thriller.”
-Adrian McKinty, New York Times bestselling author of The Chain

One secret.
Eight cryptic words.
Lifetimes of ruin.

From New York Times and Internationally bestselling author

Wayland Maynard is just eight years old when he sees his father kill himself, finds a note that reads I am not who you think I am, and is left reeling with grief and shock. Who was his father if not the loving man Wayland knew? Terrified, Wayland keeps the note a secret, but his reasons for being afraid are just beginning.

Eight years later, Wayland makes a shocking discovery and becomes certain the note is the key to unlocking a past his mother and others in his town want to keep buried.

With the help of two friends, Wayland searches for the truth. Together they uncover strange messages scribbled in his father’s old books, a sinister history behind the town’s most powerful family, and a bizarre tragedy possibly linked to Wayland’s birth. Each revelation raises more questions and deepens Wayland’s suspicions of everyone around him. Soon, he’ll regret he ever found the note, trusted his friends, or believed in such a thing as the truth.

I Am Not Who You Think I Am is an ingenious, addictive, and shattering tale of grief, obsession, and fate as eight words lead to lifetimes of ruin.

Review

Wayland has just discovered that his dad might not be dead. But! How can this be! His father shot himself in front of Wayland when Wayland was just 8 years old. This sets him on a course of disaster and despair.

Wayland is a character which tore out my heart. There were times I wanted to reach out and hug him. Then there were times I wanted to pinch his head off. His life is a struggle and there are definitely ways in which he makes it worse.

This is a story you will not soon forget. I have read a couple of Eric Rickstad novels. And they have all been 5 star reads. He hit it out of the park with this one. This is unique, captivating and the intensity it over the top! And the narrator, Steven Weber is fantastic. His portrayal of Wayland could not have been better.

The Heron’s Cry by Ann Cleeves #audiobook #audiblebook #bookreview

Overview

New York Times best-selling author Ann Cleeves returns with The Heron’s Cry, the extraordinary follow-up to The Long Call, soon to be a major TV series, alongside her two hit TV shows Shetland and Vera.

“In Matthew Venn, Ann has created a complex, daring, subtle character.” (Louise Penny)

“A complex mystery full of surprises…this character-driven exploration of people’s darkest flaws is a sterling example of Cleeves’ formidable talents.” (Kirkus Reviews)

North Devon is enjoying a rare hot summer with tourists flocking to its coastline. Detective Matthew Venn is called out to a rural crime scene at the home of a group of artists. What he finds is an elaborately staged murder – Dr. Nigel Yeo has been fatally stabbed with a shard of one of his glassblower daughter’s broken vases.

Dr. Yeo seems an unlikely murder victim. He’s a good man, a public servant, beloved by his daughter. Matthew is unnerved, though, to find that she is a close friend of Jonathan, his husband.

Then another body is found – killed in a similar way. Matthew soon finds himself treading carefully through the lies that fester at the heart of his community and a case that is dangerously close to home.

DI Matthew Venn returns in The Heron’s Cry, in Ann Cleeves’ powerful next novel, proving once again that she is a master of her craft.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books

Review

There has been a murder in an artist colony. A prominent physician has been stabbed with a piece his own daughter’s vase. Enter Detective Matthew Venn. He has been sent to unravel all of the misconceptions and delusions.

I had a bit of trouble with this story. And for the life of me, I don’t know exactly why I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have. The narrator did a great job. The story was just slow. Nothing really grabbed me. I did enjoy the setting! I could just picture some of the landscaping!

Plus, this story is full of lies and deceptions! That did keep me guessing and intrigued. And Matthew is a character I would like to see brought to life on the screen. I am definitely looking up this author’s tv shows.

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty @henryholt #holtinfluencer #fiction #bookreview

Overview

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Liane Moriarty comes a novel that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest

The Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other . . .

If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?

This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.

The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after fifty years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?

The four Delaney children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon.

One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted.

Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure—but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light

Review

Joy and Stan have a weird relationship. They have been married for a very long time. They have owned their own tennis coaching business. But, there are so many past transgressions it is hard for each partner to let it go. (I guess that is how you would explain it!). When Joy comes up missing, there are many unusual clues which point straight to Stan!

Lord have mercy! I just don’t know how to explain this novel. It is good. It is more character driven than plot driven. It is too long, but I have no idea what the author could have cut out. And…I could not stop reading it. I fluctuated between 3-5 stars. So, of course, I settled on 4.

I have always been a fan of this author. She is intelligent and it shows. She has, what I call, “smart reads”. You cannot skim anything or you miss something. This novel is no different. I wanted to skim so badly and when I did, I would have to go back and see what I missed.

Every character in this novel is flawed and captivating. Joy and Stan have 4 children and each one has some kind of issue. And don’t even get me started on Savannah.

It sounds like I did not enjoy this novel…oh but I did. I could not stop reading. I just wish it had been a tad bit shorter.

The Santa Suit by Mary Kay Andrews @mkandrews @stmartinspress #christmasfiction #5starread

Overview

From Mary Kay Andrews, the New York Timesbestselling author of Hello, Summer, comes a novella celebrating the magic of Christmas and second chances in The Santa Suit.

When newly-divorced Ivy Perkins buys an old farmhouse sight unseen, she is definitely looking for a change in her life. The Four Roses, as the farmhouse is called, is a labor of love―but Ivy didn’t bargain on just how much labor. The previous family left so much furniture and so much junk, that it’s a full-time job sorting through all of it.

At the top of a closet, Ivy finds an old Santa suit―beautifully made and decades old. In the pocket of a suit she finds a note written in a childish hand: it’s from a little girl who has one Christmas wish, and that is for her father to return home from the war. This discovery sets Ivy off on a mission. Who wrote the note? Did the man ever come home? What mysteries did the Rose family hold?

Ivy’s quest brings her into the community, at a time when all she wanted to do was be left alone and nurse her wounds. But the magic of Christmas makes miracles happen, and Ivy just might find more than she ever thought possible: a welcoming town, a family reunited, a mystery solved, and a second chance at love.

Review

Ivy is trying to start over after her divorce. She has purchased a rundown farm house. Well, more rundown than she thought. She only looked at pictures of it on the internet. As she is cleaning up, she comes across an old Santa suit. Inside one of the pockets is an letter from a young girl. This starts Ivy on a quest to find out what happened to this girl and if she ever got her wish from Santa.

Ivy is a strong woman…even if she is a bit stubborn. Enter Ezra…yep…Ezra. Ezra is her young, real estate agent. These two do not actually hit it off! It was quite a rocky beginning. But in true Christmas Magic form…well, you get the drift!

If you follow my blog at all, you know I am a HUGE fan of MKA. She has the best characters and some wonderful one liners which make you laugh out loud. This novella hits all those marks.

At the End of the World, Turn Left by Zhanna Slor #audiobook #audiblebook #5starread @dreamscapeaudio @polisbooks

Overview

Masha remembers her childhood in the former USSR but found her life and heart in Israel. Anna was just an infant when her family fled, but yearns to find her roots. When Anna is contacted by a stranger from their homeland and then disappears, Masha is called home to Milwaukee to find her.

In 2008, college student Anna feels stuck in Milwaukee, with no real connections and parents who stifle her artistic talents. She is eager to have a life beyond the heartland. When she’s contacted online by a stranger from their homeland – a girl claiming to be her long-lost sister – Anna suspects a ruse or an attempt at extortion. But her desperate need to connect with her homeland convinces her to pursue the connection. At the same time, a handsome grifter comes into her life, luring her with the prospect of a nomadic lifestyle.

Masha lives in Israel, where she went on Birthright and unexpectedly found home. When Anna disappears without a trace, Masha’s father calls her back to Milwaukee to help find Anna. In her former home, Masha immerses herself in her sister’s life – which forces her to recall the life she, too, left behind and to confront her own demons. What she finds in her search for Anna will change her life, and her family, forever.

Review

Masha has returned from Israel at her father’s insistence. He is desperate for Masha to find her sister, Anna. Anna went missing after contact with a lady from their home country. This young lady claims to be a long lost sister.

Talk about a dysfunctional family. These two young ladies stole my heart. Both of these sisters are doing everything they can to escape the pressures of their home life. They both, at different times, move out and end up living a unique, bohemian lifestyle. Anna and Masha are good girls just trying to become who they need to be, not who their father WANTS them to be. This causes such friction. Then, Anna is contacted by this strange woman with a strange claim. This throws everything she knows about her dad into question.

This story is very intriguing. With all the strange, Bohemian characters, the grifters and the train hoppers. I didn’t even know people still did that.

The narrators are Zura Johnson and Caitlin Kelly. They are probably the reason this story is a 5 star audiobook. They really brought the characters to life. I was amazed at the mixed reviews this novel has received. I guess listening to it is the way to go. It was a 5star read for me from start to finish.

The Living and the Lost by Ellen Feldman @stmartinspress #historicalfiction #bookreview

Overview

From the author of Paris Never Leaves You, Ellen Feldman’s The Living and the Lost is a gripping story of a young German Jewish woman who returns to Allied Occupied Berlin from America to face the past and unexpected future

“A deeply satisfying and truly adult novel.” —Margot Livesey, New York Times best-selling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy

Millie (Meike) Mosbach and her brother David, manage to escape to the States just before Kristallnacht, leaving their parents and little sister in Berlin. Millie attends Bryn Mawr on a special scholarship for non-Aryan German girls and graduates to a magazine job in Philadelphia. David enlists in the army and is eventually posted to the top-secret Camp Ritchie in Maryland, which trains German-speaking men for intelligence work.

Now they are both back in their former hometown, haunted by ghosts and hoping against hope to find their family. Millie, works in the office responsible for rooting out the most dedicated Nazis from publishing; she is consumed with rage at her former country and its citizens, though she is finding it more difficult to hate in proximity. David works trying to help displaced persons build new lives, while hiding his more radical nighttime activities from his sister. Like most of their German-born American colleagues, they suffer from conflicts of rage and guilt at their own good fortune, except for Millie’s boss, Major Harry Sutton, who seems much too eager to be fair to the Germans.

Living and working in bombed-out Berlin, a latter day Wild West where drunken soldiers brawl; the desperate prey on the unsuspecting; spies ply their trade; werewolves, as unrepentant Nazis were called, scheme to rise again; black markets thrive, and forbidden fraternization is rampant, Millie must come to terms with a decision she made as a girl in a moment of crisis, and with the enigmatic sometimes infuriating Major Sutton who is mysteriously understanding of her demons.

Atmospheric and page-turning, The Living and the Lost is a story of love, survival, and forgiveness of others and of self.

Review

Millie has returned to her native Germany after WWII. She is here to do a job for the government but she has a hidden agenda. She is hoping to find out what happened to her parents and her little sister.

Millie is amazed at the level of depravity which is rampant and accepted in this post war Germany. She struggles with her anger and her guilt throughout this novel. Her guilt is a unique situation for the reader…you have to read this to find out!

There have been tons of WWII books lately. So, to find one which has a different take is tough. This one hits that mark. You usually do not have a book about the aftermath. This one covers this and more! The struggle to find out about your loved ones, to find a place to live, and the survivors guilt is brought to life in the novel. Add in the great characters and you have a very good novel!
