Leave Your Mess At Home by Tolani Akinola #bookreview @vikingbooks

Overview

The Longe siblings are really botching their parents’ American Dream.

Sola Longe, eldest daughter, estranged from the family, is secretly back home in Chicago for the first time in a decade. She’s a newly single and recently disgraced influencer trying to quietly put her life back together again. The other three Longe siblings aren’t doing much better.

Anjola is in love with her best friend, who just got engaged to someone else; Karen, a college junior and the baby of the family, is grappling with her sexuality and self-image; and Ola, the golden child with a baby of his own on the way, is questioning his marriage and how to raise a Black son in America.

Sola’s unexpected return sets them on a crash course towards each other, and when the four siblings find themselves together again at their Nigerian immigrant parents’ Thanksgiving table, a decade’s worth of secrets and a lifetime of resentments explode to the fore.

In the wreckage of their fateful reunion, each Longe is forced to reckon with the past, take stock of what really matters, and find a way back to each other. Big-hearted, hilarious, and wise, Leave Your Mess At Home is a poignant exploration of forgiveness, unconditional love, and becoming who you want to be, asking the question: what do we owe to our families, and what do we owe to ourselves?

Review

I will be honest, this had a slow start but I am so glad I read it! It turned out to be a very good read!

Sola Longe has really experienced a great deal in her short life. Her mother threw her out at very young age and then lied about it to her siblings and her father. But she is secretly back in Chicago. She “inconveniently” comes across her dad and this opens some communication with her family. Then tragedy strikes.

This story takes you on an unforgettable journey with the Longe family. And boy, is it full of secrets!

My heart went out to Sola. She was abused in more ways than one. And as a reader, you really want her to achieve, if for any reason, than to prove her mother wrong. And as hard as she has been treated…Sola is the one keeping this family together through all of the drama.

Lady X by Molly Fader #bookreview

The search for a notorious vigilante exposes the secrets among three generations of women, from contemporary L.A. to gritty 1970s New York, in this propulsive novel hailed as “an unputdownable paean to female rage and retribution” by #1 bestselling author Jodi Picoult.

Los Angeles, 2024. After learning that her A-list actor husband sent explicit photos to multiple girls on social media, Margot Cooper runs away from the world—and the paparazzi—by fleeing to her childhood home with her teenage daughter in tow.

But home isn’t the sanctuary Margot was hoping for. In a cardboard box in the corner of the attic, she finds damning evidence of an infamous urban legend, the mysterious vigilante “Lady X”—including a blurry newspaper photo of a woman who looks an awful lot like Margot’s mother.

New York City, 1977. In the midst of an infamous summer, Ginger Daughtry and her two beloved roommates are able to shield one another from the chaos—until one of them is assaulted. Astounded by the lack of response from police, the young women decide to engage in some light payback, signing their handiwork as “Lady X.”

Soon copycats appear, and a movement inspired by acts of vandalism against terrible men spirals out of control, with criminals running amok under the guise of the enigmatic Lady X. When a body is found fallen—or pushed—from five stories high, the hunt reaches a boiling point.

Review

If you are a woman, you have had some level of this harassment and/or abuse. And boy this book takes them all on!

After learning that husband sent explicit photos to multiple girls on social media, Margot Cooper runs away from the world by fleeing to her childhood home with her teenage daughter in tow. While Margot is in her old home she discovers quite a bit of evidence about Lady X and a blurry photo of her mother.

Lady X took New York by storm in the 70s. That is, until everything got out of hand. Three friends take on the men who abuse women…or at least the women they know. And let me tell you, they did a bang up job.

This is told in two different time periods, present day and the 1970s. The author nailed both. I was so captivated in each section, I did not want the section to end. Y’all! Margot stole my heart with her situation. But the three ladies in NYC….oh boy…they stole my heart with their solutions to the problem! 😳

The Chateau on Sunset by Natasha Lester #bookreview

Overview

A sheltered young woman living at the Chateau Marmont falls under the spell of a scandalous, secretive man as all of Hollywood’s glamour swirls around her—a stunning feminist reimagining of Jane Eyre from the New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Seamstress.

“A clever, compelling midcentury Gothic . . . a can’t-miss read for the madwoman in all of us.”—Layne Fargo, bestselling author of The Favorites

In 1957, newly orphaned Aria Jones is sent to live with her aunt, a fading star who hides away in Hollywood’s infamous Chateau Marmont. There, two aspiring actresses, Calliope and Flitter, take the grieving Aria under their wing.

But the Marmont isn’t meant for small girls with big hearts, and Aria’s first few nights reveal an insidious secret that continues to haunt her as she grows up in the hotel’s halls, where the bright lights of Hollywood cast even darker shadows. If Aria can just stay invisible and invite no trouble as she saves money, then she can leave the Marmont and live life on her own terms—alone but free.

Her carefully laid plans fall apart when the hotel is bought by Theo Winchester, a reclusive rock star turned unexpected caretaker of his daughter, Adele, and unlike any man Aria has met before. To earn the last bit of money she needs to escape, Aria becomes Adele’s tutor, which brings Aria closer to Theo and ignites a passion she never expected.

Suddenly, Aria finds herself wondering if she still wants to remain invisible—and if inviting trouble is a risk she’s willing to take to pursue what she truly desires.

This is a book that takes you down Hollywood boulevard and then some! I enjoyed the drama, the misconceptions, and all the secrets!

Aria is such a unique character. Your heart goes out to her but she is not a wilting flower…that is for sure. She has the chateau under her thumb but she is determined to escape her aunt and her circumstances. But love may end up changing all her plans.

I enjoy all Natasha Lester’s books. She really weaves a tale that takes you to a different time and place.

Candy Apple Kisses by Amy Clipston #bookreview @tnfiction

Overview

As Jake and Emily work side-by-side to prepare for the orchard’s centennial anniversary, long-held feelings, once hidden beneath years of friendship, begin to surface. For Jake, Emily’s return illuminates what’s been missing in his life, and for Emily, being with Jake stirs long-dormant emotions she’s too scared to name. The air is crisp, the apples are sweet, and the sparks? They’re flying higher than a bonfire.

But with Jake’s ex-girlfriend’s dramatic reappearance and the mounting pressure to keep the orchard from failing, their budding romance is put to the test. Can these two best friends turn a season of chaos into a lifetime of love, or will their romance fall flat before the first frost?

This is a romance with an ex that is out of control….I really wanted to slap her silly. And there were places I wanted to do the same to Jake…even if I thought he was cute! But, Emily, she gave it her all! I loved her! She has wanted Jake since high school. But, she is not stupid enough to let him get by with anything.

The narrator, Brittany Goodwin, is just ok. She is a bit overly dramatic in places. This is minor, just something I noticed.

The Great Wherever by Shannon Sanders #bookreview @henryholt

Overview

The dead are relentless gossips, or at least these dead are.

An impulsive and heartbroken woman inherits her father’s share of a Tennessee farm that is rich in family secrets and occupied with busybody ghosts in this sweeping family portrait.

At thirty-two, Aubrey Lamb is stumbling through adulthood. An underpaid gig worker in Washington, DC, she’s grieving the end of a serious relationship and the recent loss of her father. When Aubrey learns she has inherited his stake in a sizable Tennessee farm she sees an opportunity to get out of the city—and to erase a mounting pile of debt.

Watching her arrival with great interest are four ghosts—Aubrey’s ancestors, who’ve staked their own claims to the farm and who never hesitate to pass judgment on the mistakes made by the living, whether romantic, financial, or sartorial. As Aubrey reconnects with her living family, another story unfolds in parallel: the history of the land, beginning with its purchase by Thomas, Aubrey’s great-grandfather and one of the first Black landowners in his community. Though Thomas hopes to give his children a homestead on which they could flourish, the land proves to be a burdensome inheritance. Over the years, it turns the Lambs against one another, culminating in a catastrophic tragedy that splinters the family and echoes through the decades.

Now, as the clock ticks on a potential sale of the farm, the ghosts fear expulsion from the home they’ve made, and Aubrey must weigh the hopes and burdens of her forebears with the very real needs of her future.

An expansive family saga told with a wry and distinctly modern voice, The Great Wherever is at once grand and intimate; it explores the ways we learn to define ourselves through and against our families, how we carry on after loss, and how the past lives on in all of us.

This does not happen often. But I enjoyed the present day parts of this book better than the past. The past is a bit of a jumble and I was left with wanting more. But in present day, Aubrey is a character I enjoyed. She is flighty and lord does she make some poor decisions! But for some reason my heart went out to her.

This is my first time reading this author. I will definitely give another one of her books a try, I did enjoy her characters! And I see a lot of promise in her writing.

Conspiracy, the third book in USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble’s Sanctuary series (following Ambush and Prowl), delivers exactly what her fans want: the ideal blend of suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat with just the right amount of romance. Perfect for fans of Laura Dave, Allison Brennan, and Lynette Eason.

This is a good family mystery/ romantic suspense. I enjoyed Paradise and Blake. I will say, this is a bit preachy in places. But, this is just a minor inconvenience for me 😂.

I really enjoyed the animals in this tale…yes, I know I am an animal lover. But this was a bit unique reading about the lemurs and the big cats. I loved how Paradise handled all of the intense interactions.

This is book number 3 in the Coble Sanctuary series. This is the only one I have read. I do not think it is necessary to read them in order.

This is narrated by Karen Peakes. She did a good job. She did tend to get a bit excited during the intense sections. I liked it. It added to the drama.

An Infinite Love Story by Chanel Cleeton @berkleypub #bookreview

Overview

A sweeping romantic drama with a touch of magical realism. …Cleeton’s ability to pull readers in quickly and deeply through her storytelling makes her a go-to author for an immersive reading experience. …Vivian and Joe’s love is unforgettable, and so is Cleeton’s writing.”*

When an astronaut is lost in space, his wife relives their epic love as she attempts to unravel what truly happened to him, in this sweeping love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s Space Race, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Story of Eva Fuentes.

When Joe Mitchell launches into space, the world is watching. It’s 1968, and the country waits with anticipation and excitement for another successful mission, another celebration as America sets its sights on the Moon. And then comes the knock at the door.

Joe Mitchell’s spacecraft has lost contact. He and his fellow astronauts onboard are feared to be dead. It’s his wife Vivian’s worst nightmare come to life, her grief suddenly taking center stage as the nation waits and mourns. In her quiet moments, Vivian relives their memorable story, unable to accept that this is the end to a love that felt as though it was written in the stars.

As the investigation surrounding Joe’s lost spacecraft intensifies and the mishap is written off as an operator error, Vivian is determined to clear her husband’s name and uncover the mystery of what happened in space. When someone starts sending Vivian messages—messages she believes only Joe could send—she begins to wonder if their love is stronger than space and time, and she’ll do whatever it takes to bring her husband back to her.

Review

Joe and Vivian have a strong bond and a love you will not soon forget. Not only are these two fabulous characters, the ride the author takes you on is out of this world (pun intended 😜).

I love a book that is unique. And nothing is more unique than the space program and all the wives and the astronauts. They went through so much unknown…truly terrifying on so many levels.

That being said, I did struggle with my rating on this one. The ending of this book is a solid 5 star! It is emotional and pulls you in deeper and leaves you wanting more. But the first part of this story is a bit slow. As a fan of this author, I knew she was going to deliver a great ending and boy did she!

American Crown: From Revolutionaries to Royalty: The Story of Prince William’s American Heritage by Stephanie Green #bookreview #nonfiction @dreamscapeaudio

Overview

The fascinating story of Prince William’s American ancestors, and how this often-rebellious lineage will help shape the future King of Great Britain.

In this fresh and perspective-shifting narrative, American Crown is an absorbing blend of American history and royal biography that brings to life the past generations who will shape the Prince of Wales’s role in the future of Britain, America and the world. For the first time, Britain will have a monarch whose ancestors fought against the very crown he bears.

It all goes back to the roots of Diana, Princess of Wales whose Spencer family has a friendship with the Washington clan of Sulgrave Manor that produced the founding father of America, but more fascinating is Diana’s maternal side whose American ancestors fought in the Revolution in New England, became successful in the new nation, and then (like many Gilded Age families) sent a daughter across the ocean to marry into the British elite. Other Spencers on the British side had bucked social trends in the 1770s even raised funds for the American rebels themselves. Embodying more interconnected history than any of his predecessors, William’s sense of his own role in the world is markedly different from anyone who’s ever held the throne.

With sweeping locations from battlefields to Buckingham Palace and featuring grand personalities like Nathan Hale, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Winston Churchill, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, Stephanie Green’s American Crown tells the story of a very new kind of royal family—one with the potential to bring two countries closer together in times of turmoil and bring the “special relationship” into next century.

Review

I enjoy just about anything about the royals.

For the first time, Britain will have a monarch whose ancestors fought against the very crown he bears.

This was a good book to read over July 4th weekend. It includes a lot of American history. As a matter of fact, it did get a bit bogged down at the first part of this book with all the historical facts.

AND, I felt it was a bit biased on several occasions. This is my opinion. I felt it basically blamed Diana for the failed marriage…knowing it takes two AND King Charles was very public in his affair. It also did not mention Harry until the last bit of the book. I know he will not be king, but he has the same lineage as William.

All of that being said, I did enjoy reading about the ancestors of Diana. This is fascinating. I knew some of it, but not all. So, any book that teaches you something is a good one.

The narrator, Polly Lee, was very matter of fact. This is appealing to me for a non fiction book. Great job!

Bad Boy Era by Amy Daws #bookreview @harlequinbooks

Overview

Rule #1 on the Everly Fletcher Matchmaking Manifesto…Never fall for your best friend’s grumpy brother.

Everly is the matchmaking mastermind of her family, but her own love life is a bit of a flop.

Back from four years in Dublin, she’s ready for a quiet summer on Fletcher Mountain helping launch her aunt’s animal rescue center—until Conri “Wolf” Reilly shows up.

Wolf is her college roommate’s infuriating twin brother. He’s brooding, Irish, and college rugby’s resident bad boy with thighs that could crack a watermelon.

His red card reputation has trashed his rugby prospects…until a training camp in Denver comes calling. As a favor, Everly reluctantly gets Wolf a place to stay if he volunteers at the rescue center.

Now Everly finds herself working and living next door to the Irish tattooed grump who treats her like a nuisance—but looks at her like he could press her up against a hay bale until they forget their own names.

Wolf swore he came to America to fix his image, not fall for his sister’s best friend, but the more time he spends with Everly, the harder it is to keep his distance.

Perhaps Everly’s in her bad boy era…or maybe Fletcher Mountain has its own matchmaking plans.

Review

Well this book hit the spot!

Everly and Wolf…what a pair. These two heated up the pages nicely. I fell for Wolf…hook, line and sinker…an Irish rugby player…oh Lordy!

As I said earlier, this book hit me at just the right time. I had just finished a heavy read and I needed something light and fluffy. And this one was perfect. This book made me smile and laugh with all the quirky stuff that Everly does. And don’t get me started on her uncles. I love them. I met them in previous books of the Mountain Men Matchmaker series. And no, I have not read them all, or read them in order.

This is narrated by a great tag team, Erin Mallon, Connor Crais, Emma Wilder and Teddy Hamilton. I don’t know which one played Wolff. But whoever it was did a fantastic job.

Days of Sun and Shadow by India Hayford #bookreview @recordedbooks

Overview

Born into tragedy but gifted with a powerful connection to the natural world, a resilient young woman comes of age amid the wild beauty of early-1800s Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas in this incandescent, hauntingly moving epic about home, horses, human connection, and the transcendent awe of nature for readers of Go As a River and The Giver of Stars.

Alabama, 1813: In the midst of the battle and massacre at Fort Mims, a baby is born. It’s a portentous beginning for Emilie McCain, who has inherited the Sight—visions that come in dreams guided by an owl. Owl is Emilie’s steadfast companion, a welcome balance to her mother’s neglect. Along with the Sight, Emilie possesses an innate talent for communicating with horses. In an era when a woman legally belongs to her husband, such gifts may be the only things that are hers to keep.

The family makes a perilous move to Arkansas Territory, where Emilie becomes a master horse trainer and leatherworker. For all her skill with horses, Emilie sometimes fails to see the dark truth about the people she encounters. Other dangers, even when predicted, may be impossible to defend against—yellow fever, greed, vengeance, and the unforgiving land itself.

Through love, marriage, heartache, and hardship, Emilie gains strength and resilience. After years of avoiding emotional entanglements, she meets a man who presents her with a horse to be trained and an offer of friendship she could sorely use. But with his arrival come other tests of her will and her judgement. Finally, a shocking revelation inspires an act beyond her imagining—and may set her free to find the place she truly belongs . . .

Review

Well! India Hayford has done it again. I loved The Song of the Blue Bottle Tree. And her second book is almost as good as her first.

Emilie and her family make a perilous move to Arkansas Territory, where Emilie becomes a master horse trainer and leatherworker. For all her skill with horses, Emilie sometimes fails to see the dark truth about the people she encounters. Other dangers, even when predicted, may be impossible to defend against—yellow fever, greed, vengeance, and the unforgiving land itself.

Emilie is a woman who does not let anything stop her, including husbands. And she makes some bad decisions in that department. But she overcomes so much to become her own person.

This does have a bit of a slow start but the history and the story surrounding Emilie and her beginnings just kept me moving along.

Yall! There were several places in this book that I had to pause the narration. I had to catch my breath. This story is powerful. It is emotional. It is very well researched and very well written.

This is narrated by Zura Johnson, Laura Jennings and Matt Godfrey. I cannot imagine a better team to narrate this book.
