Winter Wishes For The East End Girls by Jean Fullerton #bookreview #historicalfiction

Overview

East London, 1942: With the war still raging, can the East End Girls help bring comfort and joy to their friends and neighbours this Christmas?

Christmas is coming, and Alice Starling is trying hard to get into the festive spirit. Two years ago, she lost her beloved husband at Dunkirk, and it feels like a piece of her heart will always be missing.

With almost nightly raids on London, all Alice can think about is her important work defending the city with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force until, on a rare night out with her friends Nell, George and Maeve, she encounters US Army Lieutenant Brogan Rafferty. Sparks fly at their first meeting, and when Alice walks away, she isn’t sure whether the brown-eyed soldier was infuriatingly handsome or just plain infuriating…

But when Brogan volunteers to help to drum up rations and decorations for the Christmas party for local families that Alice and her friends are organising, she begins to warm to the smooth-talking American. There’s a kindness in his smile as he plays with the children who have lost everything in the Blitz that has her wondering if there might be more to this man than meets the eye…

Their relationship deepens as they spend more time together, and Alice begins to hope with all her heart for a future with Brogan. But as sirens wail over the city on Christmas Eve, they are separated in the rush for the air raid shelters. When the dust clears, will they find their way back to each other and their happy ending?

This is a sweet read. Maybe I have read way too many of those lately. But this one was just slow. I wanted more drama and less what the girls are wearing 😜.

This story does have a great setting and it is good for a breather between heavy reads. Plus, it might make you smile a time or two.

I really hate to say this but I despised this narrator. This is narrated by Eilidh Beaton. Lord have mercy, she was overly dramatic and just got on my nerves. And I have a lot of patience where an audiobook is concerned but she just did not suit me.

Sisters in Death by Eli Frankel #bookreview #audiobook #nonfiction @tantoraudio

Overview

In January 1947, the body of Elizabeth Short, completely drained of blood, was discovered in an undeveloped lot in Los Angeles. Its gruesome mutilations led to a firestorm of publicity, city-wide panic, and an unprecedented number of investigative paths led by the LAPD—all dead ends. The Black Dahlia murder remained an unsolved mystery for over seventy years.

Six years earlier and sixteen hundred miles away, another woman’s life ended in a similarly horrific manner. Leila Welsh was an ambitious, educated, popular, and socially connected beauty. Though raised modestly on a prairie farm, she was heiress to her Kansas City family’s status and wealth. On a winter morning in 1941, Leila’s butchered body was found in her bedroom bearing the marks of unspeakable trauma. One victim faded into obscurity. The other became notorious. Both had in common a killer whose sadistic mind was a labyrinth of dark secrets.

Eli Frankel reveals a key fact about the Black Dahlia crime scene that leads inexorably to the stunning identification of a criminal who was at the same time amateurish and fiendish, skilled and lucky, sophisticated and brutish. Drawing on documents, law enforcement files, interviews, the victims’ own letters, trial transcripts, military records, and more, this true-crime saga puts together the missing pieces of a legendary puzzle.

It has been a while since I have read a true crime book! I am glad it was this one!

This is very well researched. Now, since the murders were never solved there are quite a few suppositions. Do I think the murders were solved in this book? Yes! Yes I do.

Talk about wicked! These murders were a bit ghastly and these details are very important. It is what ties these two murders together. So just be prepared!

I love that the author narrated this himself. It always makes a book better!

The Seven Rings by Nora Roberts #audiobookreview @macmillanaudio

Overview

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author Nora Roberts concludes her compelling Lost Bride trilogy as two women—one dead, one alive—prepare for a terrifying final showdown…

Long ago, Arthur Poole built a grand house overlooking the turbulent ocean, in a Maine village that bore his name. Today, Sonya MacTavish lives in that house—a manor that has been cursed for generations. Within its walls, she has witnessed the deaths of seven brides and the thefts of seven wedding rings. And now, to break the curse and banish a malevolent spirit once and for all, a difficult task must be completed.

After Sonya, her boyfriend, Trey, and their friends are forced to hear, see—and feel—the suffering of the house’s many ghosts as their torment is reenacted by the evil presence, their bond only strengthens and their anger is renewed. Refusing to let her spirit be broken, Sonya searches each room for clues to her ancestors’ hidden story, putting the picture together, unearthing small treasures, and uncovering the moments of joy that existed among the sorrows. She’s determined to bring light to this haunted place—to fill it with people, with life and hope, once again.

But the enemy in the black dress continues to hover, to come at her in frightening forms. They may be illusions—but illusions can be powerful enough to wound and kill. She feeds on fear, and lies are her weapon. This dark-hearted witch wants to be mistress of Poole Manor, at any cost. And Sonya will need to fight a battle across two realms to finally take possession of the house on the clifftop—and of her own future…

There is so much happening in this story. Let me tell you…my emotions were all over the place. One minute I would be gasping for air because of the witch and then the next I would be smiling at the antics of the young ghost, Jack.

I enjoyed the creativity of each ghost. They all have a unique way of letting their presence be known. But, don’t rule out the darkness!

This is third book of the Lost Bride Trilogy. My favorite is still the first one. However, I do not believe this could have a better ending! I loved the way this played out and I was rooting for Sonya to nail this witch and get on with her life…you need to read this to find out!

I have listened to all three books and this trilogy would not have been the same without the voices of Brittany Pressley!

The Burning Library by Gilly Macmillan #bookreview @wmmorrowbooks

Overview

From the internationally bestselling author of The Nanny and What She Knew comes a thrilling dark academic tale of murder, obsession and ruthless ambition, set in remote St Andrews, Scotland.

A deadly rivalry.

A chilling secret.

One woman who can decipher the truth.

On a frigid, windswept day in Scotland’s Western Isles, Eleanor Bruton’s body is discovered on the shore. To her family Eleanor was an ordinary middle-aged woman. She did flower arrangements and plumped kneeler cushions at church. Little did they know she was harboring a dark and all-consuming secret. A scrap of fraying embroidery that seems worthless at first glance.

For over a century, two rival organizations of women have gone to deadly lengths to secure the valuable artifact in the hopes of finding the original medieval manuscript from which it was torn. The Order of St. Katherine: devoted to the belief that women must pull strings in the shadows to exercise control. And the Fellowship of the Larks, determined to amass as many overt positions of power for women as possible…so long as their methods of doing so never come to light.

When Dr. Anya Brown garners international attention for her translation of the cryptic Folio 9, she is handpicked by Diana Cornish, a professor and high-ranking member of the Fellowship, to join the exclusive Institute of Manuscript Studies in St. Andrews. Unbeknownst to Anya she’s been recruited at great personal danger to translate ancient texts that the Fellowship believes critical to their mission.

Meanwhile at Scotland Yard, Detective Constable Clio Spicer begins a private investigation into the death of Eleanor Bruton.

As all the women grow further entangled in this ancient web, circumstances spin wildly out of control and their lives may be in grave danger.

Perfect for fans of Alex Michaelides and Ruth Ware, The Burning Library is the story of a centuries-old secret set to divide and consume those who seek to unearth it.

There are quite a few things I really enjoyed about this story. I LOVED the setting of St Andrews. We were there a few years ago and I knew the landmarks the author talked about (this always makes a book seem more real!) I also loved the characters and the history thrown into the mix. The hunt for the embroidery and all the manuscripts had me researching. This really kept me guessing on which way this story was going to turn!

That being said, I was not a big fan of the two rival organizations of women. This just did not seem to fit. I think there needed to be more historical development around these two factions. This might have made this part of the plot a bit more plausible.

But y’all, this story is full of drama and intensity! And let me tell you, this ending will just keep you reading faster and faster to find out what is about to happen.

The Color Of Mourning by Kim Dempster #bookreview

Overview

Just as Margaret Atwoods’s Handmaid’s Tale prophesied a repressive dystopian future, Kim Dempster’s The Color of Mourning takes us on an intensely emotional journey into the very real world of today where women are confronted by fanatic religious fundamentalists in an existential fight for freedom.

Set in the war torn city of Raqqa during the Syrian civil war, Mourning is a story about love, loss, and the extraordinary strength women have when they are desperately fighting for their autonomy. Nooda, an intrepid journalist who is chronicling the harsh realities of the war, and her daughter Layal, a young woman who dreams of a better future, are repeatedly forced into excruciating situations as their family is torn apart.

Filled with raw emotion and vivid detail, Dempster’s Mourning is an unforgettable novel that pays tribute to the resilience of women and their enduring fight for justice.

This book was more than I expected. It is about strong women in a world that represses them at every turn! These women are stripped of their basic rights. Not only are they at the mercy of religious zealots, they are surrounded by a civil war that tears their family apart!

What a unique read that will make your heart break in so many ways!

Murder Made Her Wicked by Elizabeth Hobbs #bookreview @crookedlanebks

Overview

Bicycle-riding, aspiring archaeologist Marigold Manners is back and ready for adventure in Elizabeth Hobbs’s next mesmerizing historical mystery.

“A humdinger…whose characters bring to mind those of both Emily Brontë and L. M. Montgomery” (Kirkus), this second installment is perfect for fans of Deanna Rayborn.

1894, Boston. Penniless Boston heiress and accomplished modern woman Marigold Manners has put her past to good use, selling the story of the Great Misery Island Murders to earn enough money to resume the life she was always meant to have and return to her studies at Wellesley College. But her carefully laid plans for academic excellence are thrown into disarray when she stumbles across the body of a young woman in the campus lake.

When the peace of the bucolic campus is shattered by the murder, the cloistered world of a women’s college that Marigold finds so comforting proves it is not immune to the malice and wickedness of the world. The closed community becomes a hothouse where disparagement blooms into insult and small slights that have festered for years blossom into academic rivalries that could spill over into something far more sinister. Marigold must use every ounce of her logic and enlist her eccentric, colorful cast of fellow students and found family to identify the girl and find the murderer—before they kill again.

Review

I loved the setting of 1894 Boston!

Marigold is a great character. I love how she notices different things than the average person. Of course, this is one of the reasons she is the best amateur sleuth! Plus, she fights for justice in more ways than one! She is also not made for this time period. She definitely clashes with the constraints of the 1894 woman where ever she can. I adored her!

This is a well written historical mystery novel that will keep you guessing. With all the twists and turns and betrayals…perfect read for a night by the fire!

Nash Falls by David Baldacci #bookreview #audiobook @hachetteaudio

Overview

When Walter Nash is recruited by the FBI to help bring down a global crime network his life is turned completely upside down in this thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci.

Nash is an intelligent man, tough but fair-minded. He has a wife and a daughter and a very high-level position at Sybaritic Investments, where his innate skills and dogged tenacity have carried him to the top of the pyramid in his business career. Despite never going on grand adventures, and always working too many hours, he has a happy and upscale life with his family.

However, following his estranged Vietnam-veteran father’s funeral, Nash is unexpectedly approached by the FBI in the middle of the night. They have an important request: become their inside man to expose an enterprise that is laundering large sums of money through Sybaritic. At the top of this illegal operation is Victoria Steers, an international criminal mastermind that the FBI has been trying to bring down for years.

Nash has little choice but to accept the FBI’s demands and try to bring Steers and her partners to justice. But when Steers discovers that Nash is working with the FBI, she turns the tables on him in a way he never could have contemplated. And that forces Nash to take the ultimate step both to survive and to take his revenge: He must become the exact opposite of who he has always been.
And even that may not be enough.

Review

David Baldacci has done it again.

Nash is unexpectedly approached by the FBI in the middle of the night. They have an important request: become their inside man to expose an enterprise that is laundering large sums of money through Sybaritic.

Boy, Nash has himself in a mess. And this mess never stops! I enjoyed the way this unfolded. I didn’t know which way to turn.

Right off the bat, you know Nash is a good guy, no ifs, ands, or buts, about it. But he takes some big hits. From his father’s funeral, to his job, wife and daughter, the hits keep coming.

He does not take these hits lying down. He partners up with his Dad’s best friend to help him AND then the fun begins!

David Baldacci can write some smart thrillers that keep you guessing and wanting more. And I am so thankful this is going to have a book 2! I loved Nash and I want more! This would make a great tv series.

And these narrators, MacLeod Andrews, Christine Lakin, Larry Herron, Shiromi Arserio, and Will Collyer…NAILED IT!

Falling Apart and Other Gifts from the Universe by Catherine Ryan Hyde #bookreview

Overview

Two disparate people—lost in their own way—find an unexpected healing connection in a poignant novel about redemption and chosen family by New York Timesbestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde.

An army veteran with a career as a beat cop behind her, security guard Addie Finch is tough—on the outside. Internally, she’s in crisis mode. She’s lonely, introverted, struggling through AA, estranged from her son, and, at sixty-two years old, questioning her role as a protector. She also has a soft spot for the underdog that’s about to change her life.

Addie finds Jonathan, a homeless teenager abandoned by his mother, holed up in a warehouse and vulnerable to the elements and to predators. Touched by the boy’s gentle nature and a wisdom beyond his years, Addie offers him temporary shelter in her garden shed in exchange for maintaining the sprawling property. It’s an act of kindness and purpose that means the world to Jonathan. But when Addie faces a situation that sends her internal world tumbling, the emotional connection with Jonathan, once the unlikeliest of strangers, becomes her lifeline as well.

As both process past traumas, Addie and Jonathan forge a surrogate grandmother-grandson bond—a chosen family that could restore trust and heal hearts they thought were broken forever.

Review

I love this author’s books. And this one did not disappoint!

Addie is a flawed character but I loved her dearly. She lost her career as a cop to alcoholism. But she has been sober now for several years. So, when she does something terrible to protect Jonathan, it sends her into a spiral.

Jonathan definitely didn’t deserve all that has happened to him. I loved his strength and his desire to “pay it forward”. I could say so much more about him..JUST READ THE BOOK!

This is an emotional read you do not want to miss. Heck, all of this author’s books will send you into emotional turmoil. My favorite is Just A Regular Boy, just in case you want to add that one as well!

Good Hair Days by Grace Helena Walz @tnzfiction #audiobook #bookreview

Overview

Two sisters, a failing family business, and a whole lot of hairspray—Good Hair Days is a modern twist on Steel Magnolias with a little extra Dolly Parton flare.

“I’ve really messed it all up, Georgia,” Junie says. “And this time it’s the shop. June’s is in trouble.”

June’s Beauty Shop is a staple in Whitetail, a small Southern town north of Atlanta. It may look like an outdated hole-in-the-wall slathered in Dolly Parton memorabilia, but to the women in town, it is a sacred space.

To Georgia and Junie Scott, it is their family legacy, particularly their late mother’s. For generations, the shop has been passed to the oldest daughter, always named June. But Mama wanted more for her firstborn.

Now Georgia is living the life everyone expected, the life everyone wanted for her. Everyone, that is, except her. But what can a girl do when her mother’s last wish was for Georgia to get out of Whitetail? So that’s what she did. She lives in Atlanta, has a swanky job, drives a fancy car, and—as far as her family knows—makes the big bucks.

It should be no surprise then when Junie asks for fifty grand to fix her latest mess. But Georgia’s never had that kind of money. Dad and the aunts don’t have it either. To save June’s, they’ll have to get creative.

Bursting with energy, heart, and sass, Good Hair Days is about a family pulling together for a common purpose, finding healing from the past, and moving forward courageously as they encounter their hardest trial yet.

Review

June’s Beauty Shop is a staple in Whitetail, a small Southern town north of Atlanta. It may look like an outdated hole-in-the-wall slathered in Dolly Parton memorabilia, but to Georgia and Junie Scott, it is their family legacy.

I do not think there is a main character in this book that I did not like. I especially loved June. She is struggling in more ways than one (you need to read this to find out) but she always has a great outlook.

Then there is Georgia. She really had no idea that it was time to come home. But once she arrives, she realizes this is where she needs to be.

This is a wonderful story about family, overcoming obstacles and forgiving yourself! And let me tell you, it has some great emotional issues that just might make you shed a tear or two.

These two narrators,  Natalie Duke and Reba Buhr had excellent pacing. They were perfect for this novel.

The Forget-Me-Not Library by Heather Webber @macmillanaudio #audiobook #bookreview

Overview

A detour. A chance encounter. Two women who alter the pages of each other’s story.

Juliet Nightingale is lucky to be alive. Months after a freak accident involving lightning, she’s fully recovered but is left feeling that something is missing from her life. Something big. Impulsively, she decides to take a solo summer road trip, hoping that the journey will lead her down a path that will help her discover exactly what it is that she’s searching for.

Newly single mom Tallulah Byrd Mayfield is hanging by a thread after her neat, tidy world was completely undone when her husband decided that their marriage was over. In the aftermath of the breakup, she and her two daughters move in with her eighty-year-old grandfather. Tallulah starts a new job at the Forget-Me-Not Library, where old, treasured memories can be found within the books—and where Lu must learn to adapt to the many changes thrown her way.

When a road detour leads Juliet to Forget-Me-Not, Alabama, and straight into Tallulah’s life, the two women soon discover there’s magic in between the pages of where you’ve been and where you still need to go. And that happiness, even when lost, can always be found again.

Forget-Me-Not Alabama is a magical town. It is full of quirky characters, a wonderful library and a cat that has everyone’s number. But it is also a place that will help you heal. And Juliet definitely needs this.

This is a charming story where each person is coming back from a heartbreak or a trauma. But Forget-Me-Not heals them and envelopes the reader in a warm hug.

This book hit me at the right time. Such a sweet and encouraging read.

This is narrated by Hallie Ricardo and Stephanie Willis. And I felt they did a good job. Anytime narrators do NOT overdo the southern accent and fail…that is a win.
