Overview

This program features multicast narration.

One girl murdered…another one missing…and a medical examiner desperate to uncover the truth in When I’m Dead, the latest Black Harbor mystery by acclaimed author Hannah Morrissey.

On a bone-chilling October night, Medical Examiner Rowan Winthorp investigates the death of her daughter’s best friend. Hours later, the tragedy hits even closer to home when she makes a devastating discovery—her daughter, Chloe, is gone. But, not without a trace.

A morbid mosaic of clues forces Rowan and her husband to question how deeply they really knew their daughter. As they work closely to peel back the layers of this case, they begin to unearth disturbing details about Chloe and her secret transgressions…details that threaten to tear them apart.

Amidst the noise of navigating her newfound grief and reconciling the sins of her past, an undeniable fact rings true for Rowan: karma has finally come to collect.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Review

Rowan and her husband have been called away to investigate a murder. Rowan is the medical examiner and her husband is a detective. The girl murdered is the same age as their daughter. When Rowan arrives home, her daughter is missing. This is a twist neither parent can handle.

Rowan has a past. This is how she ended up in this crime ridden town. And now she knows she is paying for the sins of her past. Her daughter has been taken and Rowan knows it is payback, or is it?!?!

The way this author weaves in the killer is very entertaining. I knew the killer wasn’t any of the suspects. Anybody reading this book would know it. That is part of the plot. So, when the killer is unveiled, it is such a vague character, as a reader, you go “oh there he/she is!” I love when I am kept guessing, even when I don’t really have a chance. (A clue is probably in there and I just missed it)

I have said this before and I will say it again…I LOVE when an audio book is a production. It made this book for me. This book is a bit slow in the set up. But, with all the narrators keeping the characters real, this story turned out to be a pretty good read.

The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch by Jacqueline Firkins @stmartinspress #bookreview #womensfiction #smpinfluencers

Overview

Jacqueline Firkins’s The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch is a beautiful story of friendship, and second chances at love.

Imogen Finch has just been through her seventeenth breakup. She saw it coming, so she’s not as crushed as she might be, but with all seventeen of her exes leaving her for other partners, she’s come to believe a prediction her well-intentioned and possibly clairvoyant mother made over twenty years ago: that Imogen would never come first at anything or to anyone. Is her love life failing due to a magical curse? Insufficient effort? Poor timing or personality mismatches? Everyone has opinions on the matter.

Imogen’s ready to give up altogether. But when Eliot Swift, her secret high school crush, returns to their small coastal town after a decade of nomadic travels, Imogen has new motivation to try again. Eliot’s full of encouragement. He suggests that her curse is not only imagined, it’s easily breakable. All they need is one win–any win–and she can believe in love, and in herself again.

From trivia games to swimming races to corn-shucking contests, the pair sets out to snag Imogen her first first. But when victory proves more elusive than Eliot anticipated, and when his deep-seeded wanderlust compels him to depart for far away places, Imogen fears she’s destined to remain in second place forever. Fortunately for them both, sometimes magic lingers in the most unexpected places. And love is far from predictable.

Review

Eliot’s father has passed away and he has returned to his home town after being away for 10 years. Imogen has been in love with Eliot since, well, FOREVER! But with Imogen’s track record with love, she just knows she and Eliot will just remain friends forever.

I adored Eliot and Imogen! These two have a past and it just keeps getting in their way. Plus, they are big friends and this just adds to the drama! Eliot has a big hang up with his family and he likes to run away. Imogen is determined that she is cursed. So, will these two work it out and get together. Well, not without some drama, tears and some cute little hiccups!

Being Henry, The Fonz and Beyond by Henry Winkler @macmillanaudio #memoir #audiobook #audiblebookreview

Overview

This program is read by the author.

From Emmy-award winning actor, author, comedian, producer, and director Henry Winkler, a deeply thoughtful memoir of the lifelong effects of stardom and the struggle to become whole.

Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Since the glorious era of Happy Days fame, Henry has endeared himself to a new generation with roles in such adored shows as Arrested Development, Parks and Recreation, and Barry, where he’s been revealed as an actor with immense depth and pathos, a departure from the period of his life when he was so distinctly typecast as The Fonz, he could hardly find work.

Filled with profound heart, charm, and self-deprecating humor, Being Henry is a memoir about so much more than a life in Hollywood and the curse of stardom. It is a meaningful testament to the power of sharing truth and kindness and of finding fulfillment within yourself.

A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books.

Review

Growing up on Happy Days, this book brought back so many memories. And I learned so much about Henry. Having a slight crush on him growing up, I thought I knew everything about him. I didn’t know half of it! I didn’t know he wrote children’s books…and I am an avid reader! Geez! I also did not know he was dyslexic. Boy! He made it all look so easy! He is so talented and he has worked so hard to stay in the Hollywood game.

His wife also made a unique appearance. It is very fascinating to hear, in her own voice, narrate her part of the book. Her take on her experiences with Henry’s world made it so real and appealing.

I love when an author narrates their own book and NO ONE…AND I MEAN, NO ONE could have done it better than Henry himself!

A Haunting at Linley by Michelle Cox #bookreview #mystery @suzyapbooktours

Overview

Mixing Romance and Mystery in a Fizzy 1930s Cocktail!”

In this seventh book of the series, Clive and Henrietta return to England to find Castle Linley in financial ruin. When Clive’s cousin, Wallace, invites an estate agent in to assess the home’s value, the agent is later found poisoned, throwing all of the Castle’s guests into suspicion. Clive and Henrietta are soon drawn into an investigation, which is slowed by an incompetent local inspector and several unexplained phenomena—the cause of which many, especially the frail Lady Linley, believe to be the workings of the ghost of a hanged maid.

Meanwhile, Gunther and Elsie have begun life on a farm in Omaha. Circumstances are difficult, but they are content—until Oldrich Exely appears, proposing an option Elsie finds difficult to ignore. Melody Merriweather, still masquerading as a nun to aid Elsie’s escape, likewise finds it difficult to ignore a letter with tragic news from home, while Julia, on the other hand, receives a very different sort of letter from Glenn Forbes.

Back in England, Clive is called away to London on suspicious business, leaving Henrietta to carry on with the investigation alone. When she is mysteriously locked in the study one night, however, things take on a more deadly, supernatural feel, leaving her to fear that Lady Linley’s “ghost” might just be real after all…

Review

Clive and Henrietta are drawn back to England. Castle Linley is in financial ruin and Clive’s cousin, Wallace, needs to sell. He invites an estate agent to evaluate how much money the Castle is worth. However, the agent is found dead, poisoned. Clive and Henrietta are on the case!

I loved Henrietta in this novel. It is her best performance yet…and she is one of my favorites…so it’s hard to top some of her escapades. Add in the old castle with the ghostly feel, I was in heaven!

This is the final book in this series and it is the best one, in my opinion. It is not necessary that you read the others in this series first. But I would read them…you will be missing out! Nothing like this wonderful team, Clive and Henrietta are the best!

Payback In Death By J.D. Robb @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers #bookreview

Overview

A retired colleague’s suspicious death puts Lt. Eve Dallas on the case in Payback in Death, the electrifying new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note—Eve’s gut says it’s a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback—and she will not rest until the case is closed.

Review

Lt. Eve Dallas has just returned from an overdue vacation when she is called in to investigate a homicide. At first, it looks like a suicide. However, the further Eve investigates, the more she realizes this is murder. And it is payback! She is not going to rest until she knows what has happened to one of their own.

I am in the minority on this one! I LOVE Nora Roberts so very much. But…I DO NOT LIKE J.D.ROBB. I know, I know…makes no sense. They are one and the same…but are they??? I have tried to read several J.D. Robb books and they are just not for me.

Since I loved Identity so much, I thought I would give Robb another try. It just did not work out. And for the life of me…I have no idea why. I like police procedure, I like mysteries, I like suspense. This book was just boring to me. So, once again…do not go with what I say…read it for yourself and form your own opinion. I am in the minority!

Treasures of the Lochs by Hunter H. White #audiobook #audiobookreview #bookreview

Overview

A long-lost treasure, a deadly chase, and a magnificent beast of legends

For almost three hundred years, people have searched for one of the greatest treasures in history—the lost gold of the Scottish Jacobites. Following his father’s death and a brazen late-night break-in at the United States Naval Academy, Lieutenant Carter Porter, his life and career in tatters, unwittingly joins the quest.

In Scotland, Hassie Douglass, a spirited young employee of a luxury inn situated on the picturesque shores of Loch Ness, thinks her prayers have been answered when she stumbles across four old gold coins that may be part of the Jacobite treasure. But she can’t tell anybody how she really found them; they would think she had lost her mind. Who would believe she followed a strange, ethereal voice emanating from the loch? Struggling to accept what she heard, she can’t deny that the gold in her hand is real.

The allure of such a valuable cache draws evil, like the moth to a flame. No sooner does Carter receive a strange bequest from his late father and Hassie’s find is publicized than a shadowy, well-armed group of mercenaries attacks each of them. Soon, Carter’s and Hassie’s fates are joined, and their survival depends on solving more than one ancient mystery while facing their worst nightmares.

Blending historical fact and Scottish legend within an action-packed adventure, Treasures of the Lochs is an exciting, powerful story of faith, friendship, and redemption.

Review

Hassie is a young girl working hard for an Inn on the shores of Loch Ness. Her grandfather has been rushed to the hospital, something they cannot afford, and is deathly sick. She thinks her stars are about to change when she finds four gold coins on the shores of the loch. But, this draws all the unsavory characters out of the woodwork and now her life is in danger.

Parts of this book are so good and parts are not. I enjoyed the story for the most part. And yes, there is a good bit of imagination and mystical element…I mean it is Loch Ness. So, Nessy does have to make an appearance. I also love the history surrounding the gold and Scotland. That being said, the dialogue between the characters is too dramatic and seems canned.

The narrator, Laura Darrell, did a pretty good job. There were a few places I felt it was overly dramatic, but that could have been the writing style, as I mentioned above.

The background photo is the one I took of Urquhart Castle from Loch Ness. So, to say I loved the setting of this book is an understatement. I knew everything this author talked about. Sure do wish I had found some gold!

The Sisters of the Rising Sun by Heather Morris @stmartinspress @macmillanaudio #audiobookreview #historicalfiction #smpinfluencers

Overview

This program is read by Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley in Downton Abbey. It also includes a dedication, author’s note, and two afterwords, all read by the author, as well as two songs by the Sydney Women’s Vocal Orchestra with clips from both songs throughout the narration.

A phenomenal novel of resilience and survival from bestselling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Heather Morris.

In the midst of World War II, an English musician, Norah Chambers, places her eight-year-old daughter Sally on a ship leaving Singapore, desperate to keep her safe from the Japanese army as they move down through the Pacific. Norah remains to care for her husband and elderly parents, knowing she may never see her child again.

Sister Nesta James, a Welsh Australian nurse, has enlisted to tend to Allied troops. But as Singapore falls to the Japanese she joins the terrified cargo of people, including the heartbroken Norah, crammed aboard the Vyner Brookemerchant ship. Only two days later, they are bombarded from the air off the coast of Indonesia, and in a matter of hours, the Vyner Brooke lies broken on the seabed.

After surviving a brutal 24 hours in the sea, Nesta and Norah reach the beaches of a remote island, only to be captured by the Japanese and held in one of their notorious POW camps. The camps are places of starvation and brutality, where disease runs rampant. Sisters in arms, Norah and Nesta fight side by side every day, helping whoever they can, and discovering in themselves and each other extraordinary reserves of courage, resourcefulness and determination.

Sisters under the Rising Sun is a story of women in war: a novel of sisterhood, bravery and friendship in the darkest of circumstances, from the multimillion-copy bestselling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Cilka’s Journey and Three Sisters.

Review

Nesta and Norah terrifying escape from Singapore is almost over…or so they think. They are on a cargo ship leaving this horrible situation when their ship is bombed from the air. They spend 24 hours in the ocean when they finally reach a remote island. They are then captured by the Japanese and held in their notorious POW camps.

It is so hard to believe this happened and it is amazing, as brutal as it was, that any of the women survived. These women were put through hell on earth but by sheer luck, determination, intelligence and compassion, they withstood all this brutality.

This is not my favorite Heather Morris book. That would be Cilka’s Journey . But, I did learn a lot in this book. It is very well researched. It is just slow in places.

The narrator, Laura Carmichael, did an incredible job. As most of you know, a big trigger for me is when a narrator has to sing. Most narrators are not singers. Laura did an pretty bang up job on that part. Still not my favorite when a narrator has to burst out in song. But this one handled it like a champ.

The Search for Us by Susan Azim Boyer @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers #bookreview

Overview

A sharp-witted and illuminating, impressive sophomore novel.” – Isaac Blum, author of the award-nominated The Life and Crimes of Hoodie Rosen

Two half-siblings who have never met embark on a search together for the Iranian immigrant and U.S. Army veteran father they never knew.

Samira Murphy will do anything to keep her fractured family from falling apart, including caring for her widowed grandmother and getting her older brother into recovery for alcohol addiction. With attendance at her dream college on the line, she takes a long shot DNA test to find the support she so desperately needs from a father she hasn’t seen since she was a baby.

Henry Owen is torn between his well-meaning but unreliable bio-mom and his overly strict aunt and uncle, who stepped in to raise him but don’t seem to see him for who he is. Looking to forge a stronger connection to his own identity, he takes a DNA test to find the one person who might love him for exactly who he is—the biological father he never knew.

Instead of a DNA match with their father, Samira and Henry are matched with each other. They begin to search for their father together and slowly unravel the difficult truth of their shared past, forming a connection that only siblings can have and recovering precious parts of their past that have been lost. Brimming with emotional resonance, Susan Azim Boyer’s The Search for Us beautifully renders what it means to find your place in the world through the deep and abiding power of family.

Review

Henry and Samira both take DNA tests for very different reasons. Samira wants to find her father because she needs the money he would owe in child support. Henry just wants to know where he came from and more about his family. These two soon discover their connection as half siblings and this sends them on a quest and it turns into more than just finding their father. It turns into a new found family and friendship.

These children have been through so much because of bad decisions from everyone around them. Henry has been raised by very tough parents…his aunt and uncle. His real mom is in the picture but both his moms fight like cats and dogs. He just does not feel like he is loved or understood. Then there is Samira. Samira has been put in charge as the family fixer. Her bother stays in trouble because he is a drunk and cannot stay sober. When he nearly kills someone with his car, the judge orders him to an in-house recovery center. Samira must default on her college to pay for it.

I usually do not read teen or young adult books. Boy! Would I have missed a jewel! This book is emotional, unique and just powerful. This story had my emotions all over the place…mad, sad, scared and then mad all over again!

American Girl by Wendy Walker #thriller #suspense #bookreview

Overview

A pulse-pounding novel about a small-town business owner found dead and the teenage girl caught in the crosshairs, American Girl is the latest thriller from international best-selling author Wendy Walker.

Charlie Hudson, an autistic 17-year-old, is determined to leave Sawyer, PA, as soon as she graduates high school – in the meantime, she works as many hours as she can at a sandwich shop called The Triple S to save money for college. But when shop owner Clay Cooper – a man who is both respected and feared by many in this economically depressed community – is found dead, each member of his staff becomes a suspect in the perplexing case. Charlie must work to protect herself and her friends and uncover the danger that may still be at large in their tightknit community.

Best-selling author Wendy Walker returns with another riveting thriller, told through the eyes of an unforgettable protagonist.

Please note: This audio contains strong language, distressing situations, and descriptions of violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Discretion is advised

Review

Charlie is a sweet girl but she is autistic. She has high goals and one is to escape her hometown as soon as she can. She works hard at the sandwich shop so she will have enough money to go to college. But when the owner of the sandwich shop is murdered, Charlie becomes a suspect and everything she strives for may be in jeopardy.

I love Charlie. She stole my heart from the very first! And her situation just makes you want to slap everyone in her orbit.

This is not my favorite Wendy Walker book. It is still a good read, it just did not seem to have her usual intensity. That being said, there are quite a few twists and turns I did not see coming. I can honestly say, this book had me guessing through most of it.

And the audiobook comes with a disclaimer…with strong language, violence, etc…to me…that is unnecessary. But people take offense to so much these days. Being the avid reader I am, I did not have ANY trouble with anything in this book. It is a fiction thriller, read it or not…(you will miss out if you don’t!) It’s free on audible! Run grab it!

Home At Night by Paula Munier #audiobookreview @minotaurbooks @macmillanaudio #minotaurinfluencer

Overview

Beware the blackbirds…

It’s Halloween in Vermont, winter is coming, and five humans, two dogs, and a cat are a crowd in Mercy Carr’s small cabin. She needs more room—and she knows just the place: Grackle Tree Farm, with thirty acres of woods and wetlands and a Victorian manor to die for. They say it’s haunted by the ghosts of missing children and lost poets and a murderer or two, but Mercy loves it anyway. Even when Elvis finds a dead body in the library.

There’s something about Grackle Tree Farm that people are willing to kill for—and Mercy needs to figure out what before they move in. A coded letter found on the victim points to a hidden treasure that may be worth a fortune—if it’s real. She and Captain Thrasher conduct a search of the old place—and end up at the wrong end of a Glock. A masked man shoots Thrasher, and she and Elvis must take him down before he murders them all. Under fire, she and Elvis manage to run the guy off, but not before they are wounded, leaving Thrasher fighting for his life in the hospital, Mercy on crutches, and Elvis on the mend.

Now it’s up to Mercy and Troy and the dogs to track down the masked murderer in a county overflowing with leaf peepers, Halloween revelers, and treasure hunters and bring him to justice before he strikes again and the treasure is lost forever, along with the good name of Grackle Tree Farm….

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Review

Mercy thinks she has found the perfect house for her and her new husband. Only thing is, it is said to be haunted by ghosts of missing children and poets. So, you would think she would change her mind when one of her dogs, Elvis, finds a dead body in the library. But, no! She wants the house more than ever.

I loved Mercy! She does not back down and she has a smart head on her shoulders. Plus, she is a huge dog lover. And the dogs play a big part in this book.

This is not as creepy as I like for my fall reads…but it has a creepy house and I am all about a good old haunting…well maybe it is not THAT haunted but it sure has a history. I enjoyed the history surrounding this house and the mysterious letters and, of course, the family drama! Can’t have family drama without a lot of ancient secrets…and this tale is full of secrets!

I am very familiar with the narrator, Kathleen McInerney. She is one of my favorites. She has the perfect intonation, especially when things get a little intense!
