The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks #audiobook #historicalfiction @dreamscapeaudio @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers

Overview

New York City, 1911. Edith Wharton, almost equally famed for her novels and her sharp tongue, is bone-tired of Manhattan. Finding herself at a crossroads with both her marriage and her writing, she makes the decision to leave America, her publisher, and her loveless marriage.

And then, dashing novelist David Graham Phillips—a writer with often notorious ideas about society and women’s place in it—is shot to death outside the Princeton Club. Edith herself met the man only once, when the two formed a mutual distaste over tea in the Palm Court of the Belmont hotel.

When Phillips is killed, Edith’s life takes another turn. His sister is convinced Graham was killed by someone determined to stop the publication of his next book, which promised to uncover secrets that powerful people would rather stayed hidden. Though unconvinced, Edith is curious. What kind of book could push someone to kill?

Inspired by a true story, The Wharton Plot follows Edith Wharton through the fading years of the Gilded Age in a city she once loved so well, telling a taut tale of fame, love, and murder, as she becomes obsessed with solving a crime.

Review

Edith is in a quandary. Or rather she is bored with her marriage and her writing. But then a novelist is shot outside the Belmont Hotel and Edith becomes very curious. So curious in fact…she decides to find out exactly what happened.

I enjoyed learning about Edith Wharton. She is a character you will not soon forget. I love her tenacity and her intellect. And, of course, who doesn’t love a murder set in the Gilded Age. Very unique situation, this murder! And I want to know more about it being based on a true story! Who knew!?!? However, this story is a bit slow moving and it goes around and about to get to the “true grit” as I like to say.

I will be honest, I started this book and stopped. I was just not that interested in it. Then I read someone’s review and decided to try again. It still was not as captivating as I like. But, I did enjoy it for the most part.

The narrator, Kitty Hendrix, did a pretty good job. I just believe this story moved too slowly for me.

The House of Last Resort by Christopher Golden @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers #bookreview #suspense #thriller #horror

Overview

The next high concept horror novel from New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden.

Across Italy there are many half-empty towns, nearly abandoned by those who migrate to the coast or to cities. The beautiful, crumbling hilltop town of Becchina is among them, but its mayor has taken drastic measures to rebuild—selling abandoned homes to anyone in the world for a single Euro, as long as the buyer promises to live there for at least five years.

It’s a no-brainer for American couple Tommy and Kate Puglisi. Both work remotely, and Becchina is the home of Tommy’s grandparents, his closest living relatives. It feels like a romantic adventure, an opportunity the young couple would be crazy not to seize. But from the moment they move in, they both feel a shadow has fallen on them. Tommy’s grandmother is furious, even a little frightened, when she realizes which house they’ve bought.

There are rooms in an annex at the back of the house that they didn’t know were there. The place makes strange noises at night, locked doors are suddenly open, and when they go to a family gathering, they’re certain people are whispering about them, and about their house, which one neighbor refers to as The House of Last Resort. Soon, they learn that the home was owned for generations by the Church, but the real secret, and the true dread, is unlocked when they finally learn what the priests were doing in this house for all those long years…and how many people died in the strange chapel inside. While down in the catacombs beneath Becchina…something stirs.

Review

Tommy’s grandparents live in a small town in Italy. This town is basically dying. The mayor has offered a great deal to people willing to move to this small town and put down roots. Tommy and his wife, Kate jump on this offer. Little do they know this house has a terrible past!

Tommy and Kate definitely have their hands full with this house. Oh boy! The exorcisms and the catacombs…GEEZ! I could just picture this in my mind. And yes, Kate is right. There are quite a few things about this town that would make a great tourist attraction…the history and the spookiness just add to the mystique! This is definitely an attraction I would want to see!

The only reason this is not a 5 star read, there is something that just doesn’t sit well with me on the writing. And I am not sure what it is. I think it is the conversations. They just don’t seem to fit the characters well. BUT, The intensity is definitely there! I swear, there are places where I gasped and could not stop reading because I just had to know what was about to happen!

I have read another book by this author, Road of Bones. And I can’t decide which one I liked better. I loved the paranormal suspense and the settings in both. So, you read them both and let me know.

Need a good suspense with a wicked house and a few exorcisms…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

Someone Like you by Becky Alexander @dreamscapeaudio #thriller #suspense #audiobookreview

Overview

It’s nice to finally meet you, Jemima, Rebecca Sheridan says, her voice soft. I force a smile, and tug at the hem of my faded black dress. I need this job so badly, but I can’t let her see that. Just like she can’t know I have no money, that this isn’t my real accent. That most of my friends are gone… or dead.

I say yes when she offers me the role. I’ll soon learn Rebecca’s polished smile masks secrets far darker than my own.

Every day I rehearse. I spend hours running lines with the other lead, whose vacant expression and tearful outbursts make me uneasy. I try to ignore how Rebecca cuts me down then builds me up. How the others stop talking when I enter the room.

Why am I really here? Am I just a pawn in some twisted game?

No. There’s no way she can know who I really am.

What I did. What I’m capable of…

Right?

A breathtaking pause-resister about secrets, lies and what really goes on behind closed doors. Perfect for fans of Anatomy of a Scandal, The Girl Before and The Silent Patient.

Review

Jemima is trying to make it in the acting world. She just can’t catch a break. So, when she has finally been selected to perform for a different type of show. She jumps at it, even though her inner voice is telling her something is wrong.

Jemima is struggling. She wants this job badly, she needs this job badly. She thinks there is no one who knows her and her past. But the longer she is working for this show and Rebecca, Jemima begins to believe her life is in danger. But why? Oh the secrets!

Now, this tale is a bit slow in places and it’s a bit choppy. But, it is entertaining and kept me listening.

This story is narrated by Josie Charles. Very good job!

Mrs. Kennedy by Barbara Leaming #nonfiction #audiobook #audiobookreview @tantoraudio

Overview

New York Times bestselling author Barbara Leaming answers the question: What was it like to be Mrs. John F. Kennedy during the dramatic thousand days of the Kennedy presidency? Here for the first time is the full story of the extravagant interplay of sex and politics that constitutes one of modern history’s most spectacular dramas.

Drawing from recently declassified top-secret material, as well as revelatory eyewitness accounts, Secret Service records, and Jacqueline Kennedy’s personal letters, bestselling biographer Barbara Leaming answers the question: what was it like to be Mrs. John F. Kennedy during the dramatic thousand days of the Kennedy presidency? Brilliantly researched, Leaming’s poignant and powerful chronicle illuminates the tumultuous day-to-day life of a woman who entered the White House at age thirty-one, seven years into a complex and troubled marriage, and left at thirty-four after her husband’s assassination. Revealing the full story of the interplay of sex and politics in Washington, Mrs. Kennedy will indelibly challenge our vision of this fascinating woman, and bring a new perspective to her crucial role in the Kennedy presidency.

Review

I cannot imagine the hours of research that went into this book. Talk about thorough! I knew some of it, but not all! There is so much behind the scenes that this author talks about. JFK and Jackie’s relationship was not what I assumed. Well, maybe parts of it. But there is so much the author brings to light. It just makes it more understandable for someone on the outside looking in. And don’t get me started on her reason to marry Onassis. I would do it too!

Jackie Kennedy was a truly amazing woman. I have met her daughter Caroline and she is as sweet and she appears. I would have loved to have met her mother. I admire her more after reading this book.

One thing brought out in this book that I really had no idea about was the doctor approved drug use. How I missed this, I will never know.

The narrator, Elizabeth Wiley, could not have been better. She is “Matter of fact”! And I loved it!

Diva By Daisy Goodwin @macmillanaudio @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers #historicalfiction #bookreview

Overview

New York Times bestselling author Daisy Goodwin returns with a story of the scandalous love affair between the most celebrated opera singer of all time and one of the richest men in the world.

In the glittering and ruthlessly competitive world of opera, Maria Callas was known simply as la divina: the divine one. With her glorious voice, instinctive flair for the dramatic and striking beauty, she was the toast of the grandest opera houses in the world. But her fame was hard won: raised in Nazi-occupied Greece by a mother who mercilessly exploited her golden voice, she learned early in life to protect herself from those who would use her for their own ends.

When she met the fabulously rich Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, for the first time in her life, she believed she’d found someone who saw the woman within the legendary soprano. She fell desperately in love. He introduced her to a life of unbelievable luxury, showering her with jewels and sojourns in the most fashionable international watering holes with celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

And then suddenly, it was over. The international press announced that Aristotle Onassis would marry the most famous woman in the world, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, leaving Maria to pick up the pieces.

In this remarkable novel, Daisy Goodwin brings to life a woman whose extraordinary talent, unremitting drive and natural chic made her a legend. But it was only in confronting the heartbreak of losing the man she loved that Maria Callas found her true voice and went on to triumph.

Review

Maria Callas was the toast of the opera world for years. She was a legendary soprano with a divine voice and insecurities to match. When she meets Aristotle Onassis, her world changed drastically.

Maria is a fascinating character. She was so talented and yet, so insecure. My heart went out to her on more than one occasion. Then there is Aristotle Onassis. He played a huge role in Maria’s life, almost to the point of breaking her…heart mind and soul.

I honestly have never heard of Maria Callas. So, needless to say, I learned a great deal. Daisy Goodwin did some excellent research and put it all together for a wonderful novel.

Lorelei King is the narrator of this audiobook. She could not have done a better job! She brought these characters to life!

The Clinic by Cate Quinn @sbkslandmark#psychologicalthriller #bookreview ,

Overview

“A superior, creeping psychological thriller taut with tension and drama.” —The Seattle Times

From the critically acclaimed author of Black Widowscomes a thriller set in a remote rehab clinic on the Pacific Northwest coast, in which the death of a woman inside prompts her sister to enter the clinic as a patient in order to find the truth. Perfect for fans of Stacy Willingham and Tarryn Fisher!

Meg works for a casino in LA, catching cheaters and popping a few too many pain pills to cope, following a far different path than her sister Haley, a famous actress. But suddenly reports surface of Haley dying at the remote rehab facility where she had been forced to go to get her addictions under control.

There are whispers of suicide, but Meg can’t believe it. She decides that the best way to find out what happened to her sister is to check in herself—to investigate what really happened from the inside.

Battling her own addictions and figuring out the truth will be much more difficult than she imagined, far away from friends, family—and anyone who could help her.

Review

Meg catches cheaters at a casino in LA. She has a big problem though. Meg is addicted to Oxycodone and alcohol. And this is a tough combination. When Meg discovers her famous actress sister, Haley, has committed suicide in a clinic rehab, Meg knows this is a lie. She checks herself into this clinic and discovers more than she bargained for.

There are two narrators, Meg and Cara. Cara is a worker at the clinic. And she is a bit naïve and a bit dense. She just didn’t fit what I would expect this clinic to hire. And when you read this, you will see what I am talking about.

But, I have to say the intensity in this book is spot on. And I didn’t know who to believe or what to believe. This was very close to a 5 star read for me. The only reason it is not is the narrator, Cara. But, I loved all the twists and turns…and the ending! Don’t miss it!

Review

Kara is back in LA to testify against an infamous human trafficker. But, when the trafficker is shot in broad daylight, it turns the case inside out. Secrets start to surface and Kara Quinn has no idea who to believe.

This is part of the Quinn and Costa series. It is not necessary that you read them in order. But it is nice to have a backstory about these two and their past.

Quinn and Costa are a great pair. And Kara Quinn is at her best in this book. I love how she questions everything and everyone…including her friends. She knows someone is lying and she will not stop! And of course, Matt Costa is her calming influence. He can bring Kara back to earth.

This story has the reader all over the place wondering what is going to happen next. The hunt for the truth keeps everyone guessing. This is a fast paced thriller you do not want to miss.

The Friendship Club by Robyn Carr @harlequinbooks #bookreview #fiction

Book Summary:

Four women who work on a popular cooking show band together when they discover the youngest member of their group has an abusive boyfriend. The Barefoot Contessa meets Big Little Lies in this drama-filled novel about the power of female friendships.

Marni McGuire is the host of a popular television cooking show and leads a very happy life. Twice married, she has been widowed and divorced and now, in her mid-fifties, she enjoys being a successful single woman. But Marni’s daughter Bella, who is pregnant with her first child, is convinced that Marni is lonely and she is determined to find a new man for her mother. To humor her daughter, Marni goes on a series of terrible dates. Marni’s best-friend and colleague from the cooking show, Ellen, is a widow who has no interest in meeting anyone new and the two women have discussed the challenges of marriage and the joys of being single. But, while Ellen is adamant she wants nothing to do with men, Marni has to admit to herself that she would like to be with someone but only if he is the right fit.

As Bella’s pregnancy progresses she admits to her mother that she has some concerns about the state of her own marriage, and all three women are concerned that the young intern on the cooking show is caught in a toxic relationship.

Marni and Ellen are determined to guide the two younger women to have the strength, confidence and support to improve their situations and the women gather regularly to talk about the important issues in their lives.

When Marni and Ellen each unexpectedly find themselves falling for new men in their lives the younger women help them navigate the dating world.

Together these four women form a strong bond of family and friendship that will anchor all of them as they navigate the challenges and celebrate the joys of life.

Review

Marni has her own cooking show. And she is too busy for a new man in her life. However, her pregnant daughter, Bella, is determined Marni needs to start dating. Then there is Ellen. Ellen is Marni’s best friend and colleague. They both have issues with being with someone new right now. Neither are looking for a relationship. But as we all know, that is when a relationship finds you. There is also a sweet young intern, Sophia. Marni is worried Sophia is in a toxic relationship. Marni pulls out all stops to protect her.

Usually when a story has this many main characters, it can get confusing. But Robyn Carr has worked her magic and these characters meld so well together and the storylines intertwine and create an appealing tale.

I especially enjoyed Bella and Sophia. Bella and her pregnant hormones!!! She does not make life easy. And Sophia, she is so mild mannered and polite. So, when she gets into this abusive relationship she truly does not know how to handle it. I love how Marni guides and protects her.

Hero By Thomas Perry @mysteriouspress @highbridgeaudio #audiobook #auiobookreview #suspense

Overview

Justine Poole takes her job seriously providing security for wealthy and high-profile Hollywood stars. When she prevents a brazen robbery at the Beverly Hills home of two of her clients—killing two of the five armed robbers in the process—she is initially lauded in the media as a local hero. But the spotlight soon puts her in the crosshairs of the crime kingpin behind the burglaries.

Unable to stand the embarrassment of his lackeys having been defeated by a lone woman, Mr. Conger puts in a call to the one man who can make his problems disappear. Known for his swiftness and subtlety, Leo Sealy will kill anyone for a price. All he needs is a name and a face, any starting point to pick up his victim’s trail. Luckily for him, the local news is as eager as he is for any information about the heroic bodyguard—and quick to broadcast their findings, regardless of what it might mean for her safety. But Sealy isn’t prepared for just how quick and resourceful Justine can be. So begins a cat and mouse game between two people who know more about how to take down one’s enemies than anyone else in the business.

Justine finds herself up against both a hardened killer and a fickle media landscape that can just as soon turn on her as celebrate her in this high-stakes thriller from the author of The Old Man.

Review

Justine is a security agent for the wealthy and the famous in Hollywood. She prevents an attack and robbery on one of her clients. She ends up killing two of the robbers. Well of course, the media picks it up and touts her as a hero. But, this puts her in the site of a Mr. Conger, the one who engineered the robbery to begin with. He is not going to stand for the embarrassment of his team being taken down by a single woman.

Boy, Justine is fierce! Y’all know I love a strong female lead. And she fits the bill! As the danger gets stronger, Justine gets smarter. And the intensity just keeps building until the very end!

This author has quite a few books. I have only read one other, The Murder Book . I gave it four stars as well. But I enjoyed this one more. It moves quicker and there is a bit more energy and excitement. Now, there are places the author states the obvious and there is quite a bit of description, but these are minor issues. I enjoyed the pacing and the fervor!

The narrator, Christina Delaine, did a great job, especially with all the men in this tale.

Only if You’re Lucky by Stacey Willingham @macmillanaudio #bookreview #audiobook @minotaurbooks

Overview

Reader Vacker does a remarkable job…. Mystery and true crime fans will be drawn in and ultimately satisfied by this complex, tense tale read expertly by a talented narrator.”—Booklist on All the Dangerous Things

A sharp and twisty exploration of female friendship from the New York Times bestselling author of A Flicker in the Dark and All the Dangerous Things.

Lucy Sharpe is larger than life. Magnetic, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one, the careful one, always the sidekick and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe, and asks her to room together, something in Margot can’t say no—something daring, or starved, or maybe even envious.

And so Margot finds herself living in an off-campus house with three other girls, Lucy, the ringleader; Sloane, the sarcastic one; and Nicole, the nice one, the three of them opposites but also deeply intertwined. It’s a year that finds Margot finally coming out of the shell she’s been in since the end of high school, when her best friend Eliza died three weeks after graduation. Margot and Lucy have become the closest of friends, but by the middle of their sophomore year, one of the fraternity boys from the house next door has been brutally murdered… and Lucy Sharpe is missing without a trace.

From the author of A Flicker in the Dark and All the Dangerous Things comes a tantalizing thriller about the nature of friendship and belonging, about loyalty, envy, and betrayal—another gripping novel from an author quickly becoming the gold standard in psychological suspense.

Review

Margot meets Lucy Sharpe at the end of her freshman year. Margot is a bit of a rule follower so it is a shock when Lucy singles her out to become her friend. Lucy is charismatic and a bit dangerous and Margot is drawn to her like a bee to honey. As their friendship, if you want to call it a friendship, develops Margot realizes there is more to Lucy than meets the eye…MUCH MORE!

Margot, at first, seems to be a bit of a goody two shoes. But don’t worry, Lucy is the perfect counterpart, or is she. This is a tale full of secrets! And I mean BIG SECRETS!

I have read two of this author’s other books; All The Dangerous Things and A Flicker in the Dark . I have given both of these books 5 stars. This book fell a bit short for me. Now…this is just my opinion. This story is very slow moving. It could also have been about 100 pages shorter. That being said, I do enjoy a story with family secrets and this one has a doozy!

The narrator is one of my absolute favorites, Karissa Vacker. She is probably the reason I continued to read this tale. She is one of the bests!
