Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight @kimmccreight #bookreview

Overview

From the New York Times best-selling author of Reconstructing Amelia: A daughter races to uncover her mother’s secret life in the wake of her disappearance in this “breathless, shocking thriller.” —Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times best-selling author

“I think you’ll be into it. I love a summer mystery.” —Jenna Bush Hager, the TODAY Show

“Deeply satisfying”—Angie Kim • “Gripping and bingeable.”—Ana Reyes • “As suspenseful as it is thought-provoking.”—Greer Hendricks

When Cleo, a student at NYU, arrives late for dinner at her childhood home in Brooklyn, she finds food burning in the oven and no sign of her mother, Kat. Then Cleo discovers her mom’s bloody shoe under the sofa. Something terrible has happened.

But what? The polar opposite of Cleo, whose “out of control” emotions and “unsafe” behavior have created a seemingly unbridgeable rift between mother and daughter, Kat is the essence of Park Slope perfection: a happily married, successful corporate lawyer. Or so Cleo thinks.

Kat has been lying. She’s not just a lawyer; she’s her firm’s fixer. She’s damn good at it, too. Growing up in a dangerous group home taught her how to think fast, stay calm under pressure, and recognize a real threat when she sees one. And in the days leading up her disappearance, Kat has become aware of multiple threats: demands for money from her unfaithful soon-to-be ex-husband; evidence that Cleo has slipped back into a relationship that’s far riskier than she understands; and menacing anonymous messages from her past—all of which she’s kept hidden from Cleo . . .

Like Mother, Like Daughter is a thrilling novel of emotional suspense that questions the damaging fictions we cling to and the hard truths we avoid. Above all, it’s a love story between a mother and a daughter, each determined to save the other before it’s too late.

Review

Kat is a fixer at her law firm. She fixes everyone’s problems when they make terrible decisions. And she is a bit controlling with her college aged daughter. Their relationship is barely existent. Plus she and her husband are getting divorced. She has finally reached her daughter, Cleo, to come to the house so they can have a conversation. When Cleo arrives her mom is not there. There are signs of a struggle. These leads Cleo to investigate and she discovers a lot about her mom that she didn’t know.

Kat and Chloe are so different and so, of course, they have issues in their relationship. But, I really was not a fan of either of them. And lord, don’t get me started about Kat’s husband. He was just bad!

There are a lot of moving parts in this tale and a lot of characters. But this leads to a lot of suspects. I enjoyed all the mystery surrounding Kat’s disappearance. The way this author kept all the suspects straight with their own story and their own reasons to hurt Kat is terrific.

There is not a lot of intensity in this tale but there is a lot of guessing!

In the Lonely Hours by Shannon Morgan #bookreview #audiobookreview @tantoraudio

Overview

On a small island in a remote corner of northwest Scotland lies Maundrell castle, owned by its wealthy namesake family for centuries—until now. Edwina Nunn is shocked to learn a relative she never heard of has bequeathed the castle and its land to her. What awaits Edie and her teenage daughter, Neve, is even more startling, for the castle is home to a multitude of ghosts.

Yet there’s a strange beauty in the austere architecture and the eerie, bloody waters of Loch na Scáthanna, the Lake of Shadows. Beguiled by a frightened ghost who gazes longingly out of the castle’s windows, Edie and Neve are drawn to the legends shrouding the island and the mystery of the Maundrell Red—a priceless diamond that disappeared decades before.

Is the gem really cursed, and the cause of the family tragedies that have all occurred on Samhain-Scottish Halloween? As Samhain approaches once more, Edie and Neve race to peel back the dark secrets entwining the living and the dead—a twisted story of bitter cruelty and hidden love—or they will become another Maundrell tragedy trapped in the lonely hours . . .

Review

Edie has just discovered she has inherited a castle. She truly does not believe it. She is, after all, an orphan and has no family. But she and her daughter decide to go check it out. They soon discover a lot of dark secrets and a unique tale of abuse and forbidden love.

Let me start by saying…the setting is my favorite part of this book…an island in Scotland with an old castle…My favorite!! Add in the family secrets, the ghosts, and the lost jewel and this is a good one!

This would be a very good book to read around October. These ghosts have a strange story to tell and Edie is hoping she can discover which one is her parent. But it is not unfolding the way she thinks and she discovers a lot more than she bargained for.

The narrator, Siobhan Waring, is excellent! There are a lot of voices in this tale and she was unique for every one!

Last Night at Villa Lucia by Simon McCleave @dreamscapeaudio #bookreview #audiobookreview.

Overview

A body is floating face down in the middle of the infinity pool.

For a second I think I’m imagining it. My head is throbbing as I pull my sunglasses down over my eyes. It’s not even 8 a.m. and the blazing Tuscan sunshine is already stifling.

Flashes of last night play over in my mind. The spiteful words hurled across the table. The ruined meal. The endless glasses of crisp white wine. My daughter watching my every move.

Tears choke my throat. This beautiful villa was the only good thing that came out of my painful divorce. I fix my eyes on the gently swaying cypress trees as I try to calm my breathing.

A police siren pierces the tranquility and I collapse onto a wicker chair. I must get my story straight fast. But one question plays over in my mind without an answer.

What really happened last night?

Once you start listening, you won’t be able to stop until you’ve uncovered the shocking truth hidden within the walls of this seemingly perfect Tuscan villa. Fans of The Housemaid, T.M. Logan and Gone Girl will be utterly gripped by this addictive, twisty psychological thriller from multimillion-copy bestselling author Simon McCleave.

Review

Cerys is struggling to keep her yoga retreat/bed and breakfast alive in a beautiful villa in Italy. Plus, she is barely holding it together herself. She is a full fledged alcoholic and it is beginning to take a toll on her life and her relationship with her daughter. When a body is found floating in her pool, everyone on the premises is a suspect.

Cerys is a train wreck in more than one way. Not only is she an alcoholic, she has lots of trauma. Her ex-husband is extremely abusive and she is just struggling to keep herself upright.

There are a lot of moving parts to this tale. The author does a good job keeping all the balls in the air. There is Cerys’ past, her daughter’s situation (you will need to read this to find out), her abusive husband, the murder…all of these form one big outcome you do not want to miss.

This story is more of a 3 1/2 star rounded up. It has a really slow start and the ending is a bit drawn out. I thought that it would end at a certain point and when you listen to this or read this, you will think the same thing.

The narrator, Clare Corbett, did a good job, especially with all the voices. There are quite a few characters and she keeps it rolling pretty well.

Maria by Michelle Moran #historicalfiction #bookreview @randomhouse

Overview

Maria von Trapp. You know the name and the iconic songs, but do you know her real story? This dramatic novel, based on the woman glamorized in The Sound of Music, brings Maria to life as never before.

“As immersive, heartbreaking, and ultimately redemptive as the musical . . . This one is not to be missed.”—Allison Pataki, author of Finding Margaret Fuller

In the 1950s, Oscar Hammerstein is asked to write the lyrics to a musical based on the life of a woman named Maria von Trapp. He’s intrigued to learn that she was once a novice who hoped to live quietly as an Austrian nun before her abbey sent her away to teach a widowed baron’s sickly child. What should have been a ten-month assignment, however, unexpectedly turned into a marriage proposal. And when the family was forced to flee their home to escape the Nazis, it was Maria who instructed them on how to survive using nothing but the power of their voices.

It’s an inspirational story, to be sure, and as half of the famous Rodgers & Hammerstein duo, Hammerstein knows it has big Broadway potential. Yet much of Maria’s life will have to be reinvented for the stage, and with the horrors of war still fresh in people’s minds, Hammerstein can’t let audiences see just how close the von Trapps came to losing their lives.

But when Maria sees the script that is supposedly based on her life, she becomes so incensed that she sets off to confront Hammerstein in person. Told that he’s busy, she is asked to express her concerns to his secretary, Fran, instead. The pair strike up an unlikely friendship as Maria tells Fran about her life, contradicting much of what will eventually appear in The Sound of Music.

A tale of love, loss, and the difficult choices that we are often forced to make, Maria is a powerful reminder that the truth is usually more complicated—and certainly more compelling—than the stories immortalized by Hollywood.

Review

We all know Maria. But do we really? Maria von Trapp has shown up to NYC to confront Oscar Hammerstein. She is very upset with his latest musical about her life. She ends up creating a friendship with his secretary, Fran. And Fran soon discovers almost everything she knew about Maria is false.

This is a well researched and awesome tale about a real life person we all know and love! Hollywood really fooled us! But, I still love Maria. She was raised in a horrible situation, escaped the Nazi’s, (barely) and just did the best she could. No, she was not perfect (like the movie portrays). She was human! And this book brings all that to life. She pushed her step kids into performing after they arrived in America, to the point that most of them disliked and hated singing.

While I was reading this book, I was steadily looking up the history surrounding Maria. How did I just assume Hollywood got it right???!! She was a strong, fascinating woman who loved fiercely and was determined to be the best.

Fleeing France by Alan Hlad #audiobookreview #historicalfiction @highbridgeaudio

Overview

France, 1939: A talented singer, Ruth Lacroix has left Maine to live with her aunt and uncle, dreaming of performing at the Casino de Paris. But with the outbreak of war, and the heartbreaking news that her cousin has been killed by German forces, that goal is supplanted by another—to support France in any way she can.

Though Ruth has never driven a vehicle larger than the tractor on her parents’ farm, she joins a friend in enlisting as a driver for the French ambulance corps. On their way to transfer injured soldiers to Dunkirk for evacuation, they encounter Jimmie, a British Royal Air Force pilot with No. 73 Squadron RAF, who has bailed out of his burning plane. As Dunkirk falls, blocking off the route to the northern coast, word spreads of a daring Allied plan to rescue the remaining troops and civilians from ports in western France: code name Operation Aerial.

Over two hazardous weeks, Ruth and Jimmie will journey hundreds of miles together, helping other refugees as they rush to reach the sea before they are overtaken by the Germany army. But all their courage and resilience offer no certainty in wartime, when a single stroke of luck, or a split-second decision, can mean the difference between life and death . . .

Review

Ruth Lacroix is an American singer living in Paris. When the war breaks out, she wants to do her part to help France. She becomes an ambulance driver and ends up meeting a downed RAF pilot, Jimmie, in Dunkirk. As Dunkirk falls and over two hazardous weeks, Ruth and Jimmie will journey hundreds of miles together, helping other refugees as they rush to reach the sea before they are overtaken by the Germany army.

This is a well researched tale. It is full of history and great characters. I enjoyed Ruth. She has a big heart and lots of courage.

The only reason for the 4 star rating is the love story was a bit overly dramatic. Their conversations just didn’t feel real. Minor issue!

The narrator, Moniqua Plante, is excellent. She did a wonderful job with all the different voices, accents and emotions…and believe me, this story is emotional!

Alongside the headstrong Emilie, Rafe and Jeremy must return to the enchanted world they called home for six months—for only then can they get back everything and everyone they’ve lost.

Review

Oh! Y’all! This book is soooo good! I almost skipped it. I am not a big fan of Narnia-GASP! But, this book captured me in a unique world and I do not want to forget it!

This story follows Jeremy and Rafe. As young boys, they were lost in a West Virginia forest for 6 months. But, were they really lost?

Now, it is 15 years later. Jeremy is an expert in finding lost people. He has been contacted by Emilie. Her sister has been missing for years. Jeremy knows where she is and now he needs Rafe to help him return to the enchanted world they discovered in their youth.

This tale is full of wonderful characters, magic, mystery, abuse, love, terror, friendship and just plain creativity. It also had me laughing out loud in places.

Rules for Second Chances by Maggie North @stmartinspress #bookreview #smpinfluencers #romance

Overview

Brimming with heart and heat, Rules for Second Chancesexplores the hardest relationship question of all: can true love happen twice…with the same person?

Liz Lewis has tried everything to be what people want. But she’s always been labeled different from everyone else in the boisterous world of wilderness expeditions—that is, if anyone notices her at all. Her marriage to popular adventure guide Tobin Renner-Lewis is a sinkhole of toxic positivity where she’s the only one saying no. In a mountain resort town built around excitement, introverted Liz gets…spreadsheets.

When she gets mistaken for a server at her own thirtieth birthday party and her last line of communication with Tobin finally snaps, Liz vows to stop playing a minor character in her own life. The (incredibly well-researched and scientific) plan? A crash course in confidence…via improv comedy class.

The catch? She’s terrible at it, and the only person willing to practice with her is a certain extroverted wilderness guide who seems dead set on saving their marriage one bonkers improv scenario at a time. But as Liz and Tobin get closer (…again), she’s forced to confront all the reasons they didn’t work the first time, along with her growing suspicion that there might be more to her social awkwardness than anyone realized. Liz has just eight weeks to learn improv’s most important lesson—”yes, and”—or she’ll have to choose between the love she always wanted and the dreams that got away.

Review

Liz is tired of playing a back seat to everyone, especially her husband, Tobin. Tobin is outgoing and the social butterfly of the relationship. So, she takes an improv class to help with her social awkwardness and, hopefully, to get a promotion. She is tired of spread sheets. She wants to do more!

This is a pretty good read. I just did not like the main character, Liz. Yes, I get her situation is different but I just did not connect with her well. Her actions do not fit the way I thought she would act. Just read it and see what you think!

I did enjoy the improv idea. How unique to use it to draw someone out of their shell. And Liz uses this to help her try, key word, try to get a promotion.

This is a cute story, with lots of character. I just did not connect very well with some of them. And the story itself can be a bit confusing in places.

The Haunting of Hecate Cavendish by Paula Brackston @macmillanaudio @stmartinspress #audiobookreview #historicalfiction

Overview

The Haunting of Hecate Cavendish is book one in New York Times bestselling author Paula Brackston’s new magic-infused series about Hecate Cavendish, an eccentric and feisty young woman who can see ghosts.

England, 1881. Hereford cathedral stands sentinel over the city, keeping its secrets, holding long forgotten souls in its stony embrace. Hecate Cavendish speeds through the cobbled streets on her bicycle, skirts hitched daringly high, heading for her new life as Assistant Librarian. But this is no ordinary collection of books. The cathedral houses an ancient chained library, wisdom guarded for centuries, mysteries and stories locked onto its worn, humble shelves. The most prized artifact, however, is the medieval world map which hangs next to Hecate’s desk. Little does she know how much the curious people and mythical creatures depicted on it will come to mean to her. Nor does she suspect that there are lost souls waiting for her in the haunted cathedral. Some will become her dearest friends. Some will seek her help in finding peace. Others will put her in great peril, and, as she quickly learns, threaten the lives of everyone she loves.

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Review

Hecate is the daughter of an archaeologist. He gets her a job as a librarian’s assistant at Hereford cathedral. But this is no ordinary collection of books. The cathedral houses an ancient chained library. It has been guarded for centuries. The most prized artifact, however, is the medieval world map which hangs next to Hecate’s desk. This map, and all that it contains, changes her world.

I enjoyed Hecate. She definitely has her hands full with all the spirits and demons surrounding her. But, this story has some pacing issues. And it sure did bog down in the middle. I also found it very descriptive in places that just didn’t need it. And as I always say, read it for yourself to decide. I am in the minority on this one.

I do enjoy a ghost story. This is the reason for the 3 star rating and not a 2. There are some great ghosts in this tale with some pretty good history surrounding them.

The narrator, Marisa Calin, did a pretty good job. But, I believe this story is the problem and not the narrator.

The Trial of Mrs. Rhinelander by Denny S. Bryce #audiobookreview #historicalfiction @recordedbooks

Overview

Inspired by a real-life scandal that was shocking even for the tumultuous Roaring Twenties, this captivating novel tells the story of a pioneering Black journalist, a secret interracial marriage among the New York elite, and the sensational divorce case that ignited an explosive battle over race and class—and brought together three very different women fighting for justice, legitimacy, and the futures they risked everything to shape.

For readers of Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray, a transporting work of fact-based historical fiction from Denny S. Bryce, bestselling author of Wild Women and the Blues, In the Face of the Sun, and Can’t We Be Friends: A Novel of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe.

New York, 1920s. Born to English immigrants who’ve built a comfortable life, idealistic Alice Jones longs for the kind of true love her mother and father have. She believes she’s found it with Leonard “Kip” Rhinelander, the shy heir to his prominent white family’s real estate fortune. Alice, too, is white, though she is vaguely aware of rumors that question her ancestry—gossip her parents dismiss. But when the lovers secretly wed, Kip’s father threatens his inheritance unless he annuls the marriage.

Devastated but determined, Alice faces overwhelming odds legally and in the merciless court of public opinion. But there are two people who can either help her—or shatter her hopes for good: In the 1940s, her estranged niece, Roberta Brooks, must put aside her disdain for her infamous aunt to combat an unexpected new Rhinelander legal assault. And in the 1920s, reporter Marvel Cunningham lives to chronicle social change and the Harlem Renaissance’s fiery creativity, but when Alice’s story dominates the headlines, Marvel’s job is to cover it.

At first, Marvel and Roberta, in different decades, see Alice’s legal entanglements as tabloid sensations generated by a self-hating woman who failed to “pass.” But the deeper they investigate, the more they will learn about the reasons behind Alice Jones’s behavior and what the three women have in common. The Trial of Mrs. Rhinelander will bring to light stunning truths that will force these women to confront who they are and who they can be in a world that is all too quick to judge.

Review

This is a unique story about a young lady who is a white immigrant but is accused of being “not white”. Her father is dark skinned and therefore, in this time period, she is considered a negro. She has fallen in love with a real estate tycoon’s son, Kip. They marry and are madly in love. But Mr. Rhinelander is not going to stand for it!

Lordy, y’all this story covers everything, love, hate, family and racism. There are quite a few moving parts and the author expertly weaves them all together to create an uncommon tale. I am still thinking about these characters, especially Alice.

Alice is trapped and she doesn’t even know it. But as the years pass, she slowly begins to understand what is happening and she is going to have to let Kip go. As the reader, you see this years before she does and it breaks your heart in more ways than one!

The narrators, Joniece Abbott-Pratt, Chanté McCormick are fantastic. Y’all know I love a good tag team and these two are great!

Need a wonderful historical fiction novel about family, racism, and life…THIS IS IT!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest opinion.

Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell @hyperionavebook #bookreview

Overview

In her most imaginative novel yet, number one New York Times best-selling author Lisa Jewell (None of This Is True) launches the Marvel Crime series of thriller books for adults with an original story starring the private detective Jessica Jones.

Meet Jessica Jones: retired superhero, private investigator, loner. She tried her best to be a shiny spandex crimefighter, but that life only led to unspeakable trauma. Now she avoids that world altogether and works on surviving day-to-day in Hell’s Kitchen, New York.

The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK. The twins don’t act like themselves, and they now have flawless skin, have lost their distinctive tics and habits, and keep talking about a girl named Belle. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something “perfect”.

Traveling to a small village in the British countryside, Jessica meets the mysterious Belle, who lives a curiously isolated life in an old farmhouse with a strange woman who claims to be her guardian. Can this unworldly teenager really be responsible for the Randall twins’ new personas? Why does the strange little village of Barton Wallop seem to harbor dark energies and mysteries in its tight-knit community?

A mother’s intuition is never wrong. And Jessica knows that nothing in life is perfect—not these kids, not her on-again, off-again relationship with Luke Cage, and certainly not Jessica herself. But even as she tries to buy into the idea that better days are ahead, Jessica Jones has seen all too clearly that behind every promise of perfection trails a dark, dangerous shadow.

Breaking the Dark, the first book in the brand-new Marvel Crime series, introduces fans to a grittier, street-level side of the Marvel Universe, and will continue with original novels featuring fan-favorite characters like Luke Cage, written by S.A. Cosby, and Daredevil, written by Alex Segura.

Review

Ok, I did not realize this story is a bit on the Sci-fi side of the book world. Not really my genre at all. But, I did read it. So, take my review with a grain of salt!

Amber Randall is seeking help from private investigator, Jessica Jones. Jessica does not really believe Amber when she says her twins are not right. The twins have just returned back to the states after a long stay with their father in the UK. The twins don’t act like themselves, and they now have flawless skin, have lost their distinctive tics and habits, and keep talking about a girl named Belle. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something “perfect”.

This is not your usual Lisa Jewell. She is one of my favorite go to suspense authors. As usual, she has wonderful characters. This is what kept me reading. I love Jessica. She is a hot mess but she is also intelligent and a bit snarky!

I also enjoyed the hunt to find out what happened to the twins! What kind of brain washing or experience did they actually have? This is where the story deviated from the normal. It involves human blood and not the vampire kind.

If this is what you like, you will enjoy this one. It is just a bit far fetched and “out there”. But, it is not going to stop me from reading this author, I will just skip this series.
