The Five Stages of Courting Dalisay Ramos by Melissa De La Cruz #bookreview @recordedbooks #romance #audiobook

Overview

A sweet and spicy multicultural romantic comedy that that blends the rich tapestry of Filipino courtship rituals with the modern complexities of love, family, and cultural expectations, written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Evan Saatchi can’t keep his eyes off his new co-worker, Dalisay Ramos.

Newly arrived from Manila to lead their travel app’s Asia division, nothing matters more to Dalisay than tradition and family. When Evan asks her out, she soundly rejects him for his cheek.

Evan learns from his Filipino friends that Dalisay expects more from potential suitors. If he wants a chance with her, he’s going to have to go through the Five Stages: the courtship ritual that lovers in the Philippines have performed for generations.

At first, Evan is skeptical—what, exactly, does “servitude” entail? And he has to sing?! But when Dalisay bets Evan that he doesn’t have the nerve to make it through the stages, the game is on.

As Evan attempts to prove to Dalisay that he can win her heart—and the bet—Dalisay is driven to distraction by Evan’s sexy labors, and soon their “courtship” turns into a sizzling secret.

But when modern love and family expectations collide, Dalisay and Evan must find a way to carry a rich history into a shared future.

Featuring a memorable cast of characters navigating the intersection of cultural traditions, workplace dynamics, and the magic of true love, this heart-warming Asian American romance is perfect for fans of Kevin Kwan books, Red String Theory, and other voicey Asian American authors. Melissa de la Cruz thoughtfully explores the push and pull of contemporary desires and deep-rooted familial expectations, all set against the backdrop of a will-they-won’t-they workplace romance that will leave readers swooning.

Review

Dalisay and Evan have recently started working together. When Evan asked her out, it was a definite no from Dalisay. She is very traditional in her Filipino heritage. She expects Evan to go through the five stages of courting.

This book was a bit of a hit and miss for me. There were places that I felt Dalisay was a bit mean to Evan. But, maybe it was just me. I did enjoy their banter. And when he did the boy band number…that had me giggling!

However, even though the courting started out as a joke, I felt the relationship was more one-sided. Evan cared more than Dalisay in my opinion.

The narrator, Amielynn Abellera, did a pretty good job, especially with the accents!

Lenny Marks Gets Away With Murder by Kerryn Mayne #bookreview @stmartinspress #smpinfluencers

Overview

Lenny Marks is excellent at not having a life.

She bikes home from work at exactly 4pm each day, buys the same groceries for the same meals every week, and owns thirty-six copies of The Hobbit (currently arranged by height). The closest thing she has to a friendship is playing Scrabble against an imaginary Monica Gellar while watching Friends reruns.

And Lenny Marks is very, very good at not remembering what happened the day her mother and stepfather disappeared when she was still a child. The day a voice in the back of her mind started whispering, You did this.

Until a letter from the parole board arrives in the mail–and when her desperate attempts to ignore it fail, Lenny starts to unravel. As long-buried memories come to the surface, Lenny’s careful routines fall apart. For the first time, she finds herself forced to connect with the community around her, and unexpected new relationships begin to bloom. Lenny Marks may finally get a life–but what if her past catches up to her first?

Equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming, Kerryn Mayne’s stunning debut is an irresistible novel about truth, secrets, vengeance, and family lost and found, with a heroine who’s simply unforgettable.

Review

This is an emotional read but it is also cute in places. I love a good book which takes you through a roller coaster to get to the ending.

Lenny is a character you do not want to miss. She is probably on the autistic spectrum, but, it could be the trauma from her childhood. Lenny is holding in all her memories. She has completely blocked out everything that happened to her. Then one day she receives a letter from the parole board. Her step father is about to be released from prison. This triggers something in her. Her memories gradually start to come to the forefront of her mind and she slowly falls apart.

Lenny weaves herself into your heart! And she is much stronger than she looks. This is where the reader is deceived! Not everyone is who you think they are!

Bitter House by Kiersten Modglin #audiobookreview @dreamscapeaudio #bookreview

Overview

Vera Bitter is dead, but her secrets have yet to be buried.

After the tragic death of Bridget’s parents, her grandmother took her in. Vera Bitter raised her from behind a closed door—cold and uncaring from the moment she arrived at Bitter House. After Bridget’s high school graduation, Vera kicked her out without so much as a goodbye, and Bridget never heard from her again. Which is why, when she receives word of Vera’s passing and discovers she’s inherited the family manor, she’s immediately filled with dread.

Those worries are amplified when she arrives at Bitter House after years away to find an enigmatic piece of her past waiting for her. Growing up, there was only one person Bridget distrusted more than her grandmother, and that was Cole Warner—the son of Vera’s house manager and the bane of her childhood existence. Now, he’s her new housemate.

Owning the house she was once forced to leave with a man she’s always despised forces Bridget to confront feelings and questions she’s been running from since the day she was driven away from Bitter House.

Then the first letter arrives.

And with it, a world of secrets, darkness, and deception is unlocked. Years ago, Bridget tried and failed to find sanctuary inside the shadowy halls of Bitter House, and as she struggles to imagine a future there now, she discovers a terrifying truth: behind the iron gate and stone walls of the old estate, nothing is quite what it seems. Bitter House has secrets and, if she can’t decide whom to trust, danger lies in wait.

From million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin comes a bone-chilling, thoroughly enjoyable, and achingly addictive thriller set within the walls of a mysterious old manor with a sinister secret.

Review

Vera Bitter has recently passed away. She has left her unique home to her granddaughter, Bridget and her manger’s son, Cole. Bridget was kicked out by her grandmother when she turned 18 and she has no idea why. And now she has to share this house with someone she never trusted, Cole.

Bridget and Cole despise each other. Or rather, Bridget has some trust issues where Cole is concerned. These two were raised together but the mistrust runs deep. However, these two are going to have to work together to unravel all the mysteries and questions literally dropped at their door. Someone is leaving mysterious letters about Vera’s past.

This author has recently become one of my favorites! She has some great intensity and unique situations. And this story is right at the top. I enjoyed all the secrets and the creepy house. I did feel the ending was a bit too neat and tied with a bow! But, getting to the end is twisty and not exactly what I expected! I love a book which has me guessing.

The narrators, Lauren Ezzo; Melanie Carey, are excellent!

The Day He Never Came Home by Andrew Deyoung @pppress #bookreview

Overview

A wonderfully compelling and wildly intelligent exploration of moral corruption.”― William Kent Krueger, New York Times bestselling author

He conned first, but she conned harder.

Regan Peters knows her husband John wants to give her and their children a good life. The long hours he puts in as a financial advisor prove his dedication, and despite how mysterious he is about his past, that’s been enough for her to get through the hard days. Until the FBI shows up at their door, and Regan learns that her husband has been running a Ponzi scheme, is mixed up with dangerous criminals, and has been living under an assumed identity all these years. Everything she thought she knew about her life has been a lie.

That includes the present John gifted her the day before he disappeared―a lake house, bought with cash, and put in her name only. With her life falling apart, Regan must make a split-second decision: does she tell the FBI about the house? Or does she buy some time to forge her own path to saving herself? But one compromise inevitably leads to another, and one dangerous secret builds on the next.

When her lies of omission to the FBI agents begin to raise questions, Regan becomes inextricably embroiled in John’s crimes, the true extent of which are just beginning to be revealed. Now that her comfortable life is clearly over, Regan is learning she is capable of far more than she ever imagined. She will do anything to protect herself, her children, and their future. Anything.

To protect her family, one mother’s lie of omission leads to another in this twisty, suspenseful domestic thriller, perfect for fans of Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me.

“Surprising and smart and wonderfully original, this page-turner of a thriller is completely entertaining.” ― Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling author of One Wrong Word

Review

Regan and her husband have just had a wonderful day. He has bought her a lake house and she is beyond excited. But the next day, he does not come home and the FBI are at her door. They are accusing him of stealing money from his investors. She is now on her on and navigating this terrible mess!

After a rough 24 hours Regan begins to think about her options. And she is not going to sit back and watch her world fall apart. And boy…does she take action!

This book starts out so strong and I could not stop reading. Now, it did slow down a bit in the middle. But, the hook was set and I had to see where this story was headed.

As a reader, you may not start out thinking Regan is super smart…but her true colors come out and she takes no prisoners!

One Last Shot by Betty Cayouette #bookreview #romance @stmartinspress #smpinfluencer

Overview

From the creator of viral TikTok account Betty’s Book List, a debut romance about a supermodel and a photographer with a past marriage pact who meet again ten years later on a photoshoot in Cinque Terre, Italy.

From the moment Emerson and Theo met as teenagers, they were inseparable. But just when they finally expressed their feelings to one another, they were torn apart.

Now, supermodel Emerson is nearing her twenty-eighth birthday, and she’s tired of looking for love in all the wrong places. When the calendar reminder for the marriage pact she and Theo made as teens goes off on her phone, she realizes this is it—her chance to rekindle the only romance that ever really made sense. Emerson convinces her grumpy agent to book her as the face of the fashion campaign that Theo, now a fashion photographer, is shooting. The good news: the campaign is being shot in ridiculously romantic Cinque Terre, Italy. The bad news? Theo might not be as happy to see her as she’d hoped.

The two embark on a four-day campaign that tests not only their feelings, but their ability to keep their hands off one another. But as roadblock after roadblock keeps them apart, Emerson starts to wonder: will this photoshoot be the key to getting one last shot at love, or will it be a final goodbye?

Review

This is an adorable tale of two friends, photographer Theo and super model Emerson. These two have been the best of friends since high school. But life got busy and these two lost touch. But Emerson’s phone alerts her one day of their marriage pact. All of Emerson’s feelings come rushing back. But has Theo married? Will he feel the same way?

Of course these two do not make it easy! There are a lot of misunderstandings and some hurt feelings. But as you can guess, (yes it is a romance novel, so no surprises!) the chemistry just can’t help but pull them together with great force!

I enjoyed these two, especially Emerson. For her to be a super model, she is really down to earth. Add in the setting of Italy and this is a romance you will definitely enjoy!

Beyond Summerland by Jenny Lecoat #historicalfiction #bookreview @harlequinbooks

BEYOND SUMMERLAND

Author: Jenny Lecoat

Publication Date: July 2, 2024

ISBN: 9781525831546

Format: Trade Paperback

Publisher: Harlequin Trade Publishing / Graydon House

Price $18.99

Book Summary:

Beatriz Williams meets Laura Spence-Ash in this fast-paced and tension-filled novel about secrets and betrayal in a small community recovering from war, and the two young women at the center of a volatile mystery.

In June of 1945, Jersey is in the midst of change as the German occupation of the Channel Islands comes to an end. However, demands for punishment are rising for those suspected of collaborating with the Nazis. Neighbor turns against neighbor as distrust flourishes and accusations fly, especially towards women who had romantic relationships with the German soldiers.

When Jean Parris learns that her father, who died in a German prison, was reported to the Nazis by an anonymous woman, her rage hits a boiling point. The suspect, Hazel Le Tourneur, denies the accusation but has a motive for wanting Jean’s father gone. Then, when Hazel catches Jean secretly meeting with a German soldier, the women form an unexpected bond in the face of ruinous consequences. With tension running high and secrets at every turn, the truth behind the accusations may be more complicated than anyone could imagine.

Review

The war is finally over. Jean and her mother have just discovered that her father, who was taken away by the Nazis, has died in prison. They are still wondering who in their town turned him in for his contraband radio. They will not rest until they discover the traitor.

There are a lot of moving parts to this tale…lies, betrayals, and more lies. The Nazis have just left the Channel Islands and the whole town is trying to regroup. But, there is so much mistrust because everyone sees everyone else as a collaborator with the Nazis. When Jean discovers one of their neighbors, Hazel, had a fight with her father, the whole family causes so much grief for this poor woman. They are determined that Hazel is the one who turned him in and caused his death. But, they soon discover that he was not as upstanding as they thought.

I did feel the ending was a bit rushed. Also, I was not a fan of any of the characters. Jean does redeem herself in the end and she was my favorite. But all of these characters lie to each other 😂. You know, real life stuff😏.

Elsewhere by Sarah Tierney @dreamscapeaudio #audiobookreview #bookreview

Overview

A psychologically gripping novel of estranged sisters, deep secrets, and tense twists from “an elegant and thrilling new voice” (Emma Jane Unsworth, author of Animals).

At the height of summer, two sisters reunite at a remote cottage. They’ve long been distant from each other, literally as well as emotionally: Anna is a free-spirited wanderer and Catherine is career-focused and settled in one place. So, some tension is not surprising, but it rapidly escalates when odd things start happening during the all-night twilight on the wild peninsula.

Who’s the watchful girl with a baby and what does she want from the sisters? Who bangs on their windows in the early hours then disappears into the woods? What does the sad-eyed Scottish man Anna is falling for know about it all? And how does it link back to an event twenty years ago that the sisters never talk about—the incident that created all this confusion, dislocation, and longing in the first place?

This suspenseful, knowing novel explores how psychosis creeps in on the back of isolation and suspicion; the shadow that motherhood casts over women’s lives, even when there is no child; and how buried trauma always winds its way up to the surface—sometimes in the strangest and most frightening ways.

Review

Two sisters, Anna and Catherine decide to get away. These two do not necessarily get along. They are just too different. This trip is to bring them back together and mend some fences. They end up at a remote cottage in the Scottish Highlands. But there is more going on in the psychosis of the mind than either expect.

Now, the reason for the 3 star rating on this one is that there are places where the story does not flow as well as it should. And it is a bit confusing. But! It is creepy as all get out! And I did enjoy it, especially the setting of Scotland. I could just picture the sea and Fort William. Oh! And the creepy house! I am all about a house in the middle of nowhere and yes…while traveling through Scotland…you will see that lone house…

I love a good tag team of narrators. And this team of Lorna Bennett and Kat Rose-Martin is pretty dad-blame good.

You’ll Never Find Me by Allison Brennan @harlequinbooks #bookreview

Overview

Nothing brings family together like crime. In the first book in the thrilling new Angelhart series from New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan, private investigator Margot Angelhart helps clients the law overlooks, but when she takes on a case more dangerous than she imagined, teaming up with her estranged siblings may be her only hope for survival.

Working alone as a private investigator is tough. Estranged from her PI family, Margo Angelhart does what she must to get by—including taking on sordid cases that pay the bills, even if she’d rather be helping those the justice system has failed.

That is, until a cheating husband case she’s working intersects with her siblings’ corporate espionage investigation, forcing Margo to cooperate with the Angelhart firm. Now, as the siblings compare notes, it’s clear they need to work together before a white-collar crime escalates to murder.

With far more questions than answers and a key suspect on the run, they’ll need the whole family to pitch in. But as they investigate the ever-twisting mystery, Margo isn’t sharing everything. Can she learn to trust her family and heal their once-close relationship before her secrets put those she loves most in danger?

Review

This novel has several story lines. They are unrelated to each other but they flow well together wrapped around the wonderful, private investigator, Margo.

Margo takes on cases that the law can’t help. She has just helped a young girl and her two children escape from her abusive husband. And this husband is not letting it go. He is out for blood and it just might be Margo.

Margo also has been hired by a lady to follow her cheating husband and get proof of his misdeeds. Margo hates these cases. But the more she follows the husband the more she realizes the wife may be the problem.

I have read several Allison Brennan’s books and there is not a bad one in the bunch. And I truly enjoyed this novel as well. This has great intensity and great characters. I never knew which way this was going to turn next.

Veridian Sterling Fakes It by Jennifer Gooch Hummer @wunderkindpr @ LUAuthors #bookreview

Overview

In this colorful and humorous tale, a hopeful young painter finds herself embroiled in the world of art heists…and possibly responsible for the counterfeits needed to cover them up.

Freshly graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, Veridian Sterling is ready to hang her work in any of the countless New York galleries that are sure to give her a show. The problem is only one will, and they’re not interested in her art so much as her personal assistant skills.

No glitz, no glam, and definitely none of the money she needs to help her struggling mother finally realize her dream of starting her own business after having sacrificed everything for Veri to go to art school. So when she overhears her new boss discussing the impressive finder’s fee for a lost van Gogh, Veri takes matters into her own hands. Maybe her own artwork isn’t celebrated, but she knows how to copy what is, and maybe those skills can help lead to a discovery.

But when a famous art dealer takes her under his wing (and his charming driver takes her interest), Veri realizes she’s in deeper than she expected, and quite possibly with the wrong people. With her mother’s dreams and her own future at stake, Veri will have to pull out every trick she can think of to wipe her canvas clean and erase the mess she’s created before she goes down for someone else’s crimes.

Review

I fell for Veri right from the start. She is struggling to make it as an artist. She has recently graduated from Rhode Island School of design where she won a prestigious award. But, after visiting tons of galleries, she has no chance to get a show. She does eventually get hired as an assistant to an extremely demanding boss. And boy…does this lead her astray!

Veri is such an adorable character. She wants to do right but life just keeps pulling her in a different direction. Enter Tate! Tate is the handsome driver for a famous art dealer. Here is where the fun begins. Veri may just end up committing some crimes if she is not careful.

I enjoyed this funny, tangled and amusing story. Such adorable characters with a bit of a dark side!

Overview

After a soul-crushing stint at music school, Sarah Mandelbaum thinks her star is finally on the rise when she’s recruited by the fabulous Fiona Campbell for a top spot at high-fashion Sophistiquée magazine.
But almost as soon as she slips into her first pair of stilettos, Sarah realizes that between the plotting and scheming of the industry’s Fashion Flamingos and outrageous demands from Sophistiquée’s creative director Henri-François Bernard, her fall is imminent. Caught between the need to pay off her staggering student loans and the struggle to regain her self-confidence, Sarah seems completely stuck between that proverbial rock and a hard place.
But with the help of a tattooed guitar teacher, a statuesque Southern pastry chef, 90-lb financial analyst with anger management issues, and a rockstar muse, she discovers the true path to her return. The question is: Will she take it?

Review

Sarah has lost her chance in music school but she has another glorious opportunity at the high-fashion Sophistiquée magazine. But her failure at the magazine is eminent. However, a new opportunity has rolled around…will she take it?

Well! Sarah is a character I absolutely loved! My heart went out to her on more than one occasion but she is a trooper and nothing can keep her down!

I loved all the 1990 fashion trends and…of course the band references are fantastic!

This story will keep entertained with fabulous characters and wonderful nostalgia!
