The Singer Sisters by Sarah Seltzer #bookreview @flatironbooks #audiobookreview @macmillanaudio

Overview

This program features multicast narration.

Two generations of a folk-rock dynasty collide over art, love, longing, and family secrets in this captivating and poignant debut

It’s 1996, and alt-rocker Emma Cantor is on tour, with her sights trained on a record deal. Emma’s got no lack of inspiration for her music — chiefly her mother Judie, a 1960s folk legend whose confessional songs made her an icon before her mysterious withdrawal from the public eye. Emma is baffled by Judie’s coldness, and is deeply shaken when she learns a long-kept secret about their family. When Emma uncovers more about her mother’s past, she is vaulted to new heights as a performer. But the knowledge she gains also propels her toward a musical betrayal that further fractures her relationship with Judie. Increasingly famous, but fragile and isolated, Emma grapples with her mother’s legacy and what it means for her own future.

With the richness of a beloved folk song, The Singer Sisters moves between ’60s folk clubs and ’90s music festivals, chronicling the ups and downs of stardom while asking what women artists must sacrifice for success.

Review

Judie left the music scene years ago, when she was on top! Now her daughter, Emma, has a chance to make it. Emma struggles with her relationship with her mother. She cannot understand why she just gave it all up. But Emma soon discovers her mother’s past and it is not what she expected.

This story really did not move fast enough for my taste. But, I did enjoy the characters. But all of them make bad decisions and just do not think of the outcomes of these terrible decisions.

I also enjoyed the music scene, especially Judie’s part in the 60s. Just loosey goosey! Emma is a bit more uptight. But these two have a lot to work out!

Y’all know I love a tag team of narrators. It truly makes the book more real. These narrators, Barrie Kreinik; Helen Laser; Stephanie Németh-Parker, are top notch!

Beyond Ivy Walls by Rachel Fordham #historicalfiction #bookreview @thomasnelson

Overview

Reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, a recluse and a young woman discover that the scars of life are no match against an act of love.

Iowa, 1903. All of Monticello believes Otis Taylor has been away fostering his musical genius. But the truth is that his father exiled him long ago, rejecting Otis’s appearance and the scars that came with it. Now that he is the last living Taylor, Otis has covertly returned to settle his family’s affairs and rid himself of his past for good. However, he soon discovers that he may not have been the only abandoned Taylor and begins a tireless search for his missing toddler niece.

At twenty-three years old, Sadie West left her family farm and found employment at the Hoag feather duster factory. It isn’t a romantic job, but she’s hardly had a glimmer of romance since her beau went off to college, leaving her with no promise of a future together. Desperate to save money and help her family make ends meet, she trespasses and finds shelter in an abandoned building–and is thrown in the path of the town’s mysterious bachelor.

Otis’s wounds are deep, but as Sadie’s friendship with him grows, she begins to fall for the man beneath the mask. Locating his long-lost niece, however, is more difficult than either could have imagined, and Sadie West may be the key to Otis Taylor finally finding his way home.

Review

Otis has returned to Monticello, Iowa. He is only going to stay long enough to sell his family home. He wants nothing to do with it. As he struggles through his memories and his past, he realizes someone is living in his family’s closed factory. He uncovers a stowaway! A young girl named Sadie is living there. These two slowly develop a unique friendship. Both soon discover love is in the air.

Now, this is classified as Christian fiction. As most of you know, this is not my favorite genre. I did find this tale a bit predictable in places but it is just an all around good read.

I love a story that has me researching. I was researching right off the bat. I had to know about the feather duster factory. And yes it did exist!

The characters, Sadie and Otis are great together! I enjoy their banter and the stories surrounding their situations. Sadie is struggling to keep her family from losing their farm. This is why she is working at the feather duster factory. And Otis, he is broken in so many ways…you will need to read this to find out!

Scandalous Women by Gill Paul #bookreview @wmmorrowbooks

Review

Mad Men meets the world of publishing in international bestselling author Gill Paul’s new novel about Jackie Collins and Jacqueline Susann, two dynamic, groundbreaking writers renowned for their scandalous and controversial novels, and the beleaguered young editorial assistant who introduces them.

1966, NYC: Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls hits the bookstores and she is desperate for a bestseller. It’s steamy, it’s a page-turner, but will it make the big money she needs? In London, Jackie Collins’s racy The World Is Full of Married Men launches her career. But neither author is prepared for the price they will pay for being women who dare to write about sex.

Jacqueline and Jackie are lambasted by the literary establishment, deluged with hate mail, and even condemned by feminists. In public, both women shoulder the outcry with dignity; in private, they are crumbling—particularly since they have secrets they don’t want splashed across the front pages.

1965, NYC: College graduate Nancy White is excited to take up her dream job at a Manhattan publishing house, but she could never be prepared for the rampant sexism she will encounter. While working on Valley of the Dolls, she becomes friends with Jacqueline Susann, and, after reaching out to Jackie Collins about a US deal, she is responsible for the two authors meeting.

Will the two Jackies clash as they race to top the charts? Will Nancy achieve her ambition of becoming an editor, despite all the men determined to hold her back? Three women struggle to succeed in a man’s world, while desperately trying to protect those they love the most.

Review

This is a unique novel about Jackie Collins and Jacqueline Susann, two dynamic, groundbreaking writers renowned for their scandalous and controversial novels, and the beleaguered young editorial assistant who introduces them.

To say I love this book is an understatement. This book hit me at just the right time and just the right place. But the nostalgia this brought back to me is amazing. I remember reading Jackie Collins when I was a young girl in high school. (GASP!) And there was so much in this book that I did not know.

Same with Jacqueline Susann. I was late to the game reading her. And I certainly did not know much about her life. And I did feel that this book had more about her than it did Jackie.

These two ladies changed the way women were viewed in publishing…no doubt! Not without trauma..but they each handled it in their own way.

Then there is Nancy. Nancy is just a young girl trying to break into the publishing field as an editor. Oh the stuff she goes through!

The Housekeeper’s Secret by Iona Grey @macmillanaudio @stmartinspress #audiobook #bookreview #smpinfluencers

Overview

This BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN HISTORICAL is a SUMPTUOUS, PAGE-TURNING DELIGHT filled with an enticing mix of FORBIDDEN ROMANCE and buried secrets.”—Ellen Marie Wiseman, New York Timesbestselling author of The Lost Girls of Willowbrook

Duty, desire, and deception reside under one roof.

Standing in the remote windswept moors of Northern England, Coldwell Hall is the perfect place to hide. For the past five years, Kate Furniss has maintained her professional mask so carefully that she almost believes she is the character she has created: Coldwell’s respectable housekeeper.

It is the summer of 1911 that brings new faces above and below the stairs of Coldwell Hall—including the handsome and mysterious new footman, Jem Arden. Just as the house’s shuttered rooms open, so does Kate’s guarded heart to a love affair that is as intense as it is forbidden. But Kate can feel her control slipping as Jem harbors secrets of his own.

Told in alternating timelines from the last sun-drenched summer of the Edwardian Age to the mud-filled trenches of WWI, The Housekeeper’s Secret opens its door to a world of romance, the truths we hold onto, and the past we must let go.

Review

Kate Furniss is the housekeeper of Coldwell Hall. This is the perfect hiding place for her. She is running from an abusive husband.

Then there is the footman, Jem Arden. He is at Coldwell Hall to find out what happened to his brother. His brother has been missing and he went missing from Coldwell Hall.

I enjoyed the mystery surrounding these two characters. And when their love blooms…it just might find them in a mess. Jem is strong and he protects Kate to the best of his ability. Kate is also tough, tougher than she knows. But will their strength protect them??

Boy this book is long! Longer than it needed to be. It just moved so slow. But the author created enough mystery surrounding the two main characters that I kept with it. I have only read one other novel by this author The Glittering Hour. And apparently I had the same thoughts about that novel.

I do believe the narrators, Raphael Corkhill; Shakira Shute, were another reason I kept listening to this book. They were truly fantastic.

A destination wedding in Italy’s Lake Como brings three best friends back together to face the secrets of the past in this romantic novel from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst.

Best friends Ava, Madison, and Chelsea made a pact to reunite for each other’s weddings when their careers sent them in different directions. But after one of them makes a choice that tears the group apart, an upcoming wedding might be their last chance to heal old wounds.

Ava is about to marry the man she loves in a lavish ceremony on the shores of Lake Como, but she’s haunted by the mistakes she’s made.

Madison’s made a name for herself as an influencer in the fashion world but is threatened by a scandal impacting everything she holds dear.

And Chelsea has the perfect family she always craved, but her professional dreams have fallen by the wayside.

As they return to Italy’s gorgeous coast, the three women revisit their life-changing first trip to Lake Como during college. When Madison comes face-to-face with the college sweetheart who was at the heart of one of the most pivotal times of her life, can they forge a new way forward?

Review

Ava, Madison and Chelsea are best friends. But life and bad decisions have torn them apart. Ava is about to get married and she is hoping to get them back together. But she is unsure if forgiveness is on the table.

These three young ladies each have different personalities and different dreams. I enjoyed all three! They definitely encouraged each other through hard times. They have been each other’s rock for years until one betrayed the other.

I have enjoyed Jennifer Probst books for quite a while. This one is not my favorite but it is still a good read. It does slow down in the middle a bit but the characters and their struggle to find their way back to each other really kept me reading.

Galway Confidential by Ken Bruen #bookreview @penzlerpub

Overview

In this new installment of Ken Bruen’s beloved Jack Taylor series, the whiskey-swigging Irish detective investigates a series of violent attacks on the local convent’s nuns.

Jack Taylor wakes up from a coma to discover that much of the world has changed since he last walked the streets of Galway. The pandemic had hit while he was under, devastating the lives of many in his beloved city and beyond. Now, as Jack tries to recover from the attack that put him in the hospital and absorb the incredible changes in the world around him, a woman approaches him with a distressing case: two local nuns have been bludgeoned by a mysterious man wielding a hammer, and more are sure to follow. As the police fail to act while the violence against the Sisters escalates, Jack seems like their only hope.

Initially wary of becoming involved in the investigation, Jack finds he cannot stay away from the mystery surrounding these vicious attacks. He also cannot shake a feeling of darkness that has haunted him since he awoke from his coma—a darkness that is far too close for comfort. Luckily, an old friend is there to help see him through and there is always Jack’s dark wit and a drink to help shore up his mood.

Review

Jack has just awakened from a coma to discover the world he once knew is gone.

Jack is a unique character that you can’t help but fall for. He is matter of fact, no nonsense and a bit on the rude side. And I loved that for him. He does not take any prisoners, but don’t worry….the nuns take him to school.

This story had me laughing out loud in places due to snarky comments. It also had me gasping for breath because Jack had to catch this killer!!

This is part of a series and I have not read a single one. This is my first. I did not feel lost…well except for the coma part! I need to go back and read that book 😂. So, it is not necessary that you read these in order.

Overview

Follow Gertie MacIntyre from knitting circle to air stewardess in this glorious and romantic summer novel set in Scotland’s windswept Northern isles, by beloved New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan.

In the northernmost reaches of Scotland, where a string of little islands in the North Sea stretches towards Norway, lives Gertie MacIntyre, a proud island girl by birth. Her social circle is small but tight: family and friends, particularly the women in her knitting circle. In the whitewashed cottages of their hometown, everyone knows everyone, and the ladies of the knitting circle know more than most. In a place of long dark winters and geographic isolation, the knitting circle is a precious source of gossip, home, laughter, and comfort for them all. And while she knits, Gertie’s busily plotting what to do with the rest of her life.

When Gertie develops a crush on Callum Frost, who owns the local airline, she dares herself to take a job as an air stewardess on the little plane that serves the local islands. Terrifying at first, the sixteen-seat puddle jumper also offers the first taste of real freedom she’s ever known. Will Gertie’s future lie in the skies? Or will she need to go further afield to find the adventure she craves?

Review

Gertie lives on a little island in northern Scotland. She is a bit shy and her social circle is very limited. She has been offered a job at an airlines flying between the local islands. She decides to step out on the limb, leave her grocery store job, and take one in the friendly skies. Will Gertie finally succeed in finding adventure and maybe love??

Gertie is such a sweet girl, even if she is in a rut! I love that she is a big daydreamer. This gets her in trouble on more than one occasion! PLUS!!! She is a knitter! Being a knitter myself, I loved this part of the story. OH…AND ALSO, this book is set in my favorite place ever…SCOTLAND!

I enjoyed reading about Gertie. She came into her own and continued to grow throughout this novel. She decided to take a few risks and it was delightful to experience this with her!

As much as I loved the characters and the setting, this story is a bit predictable. That being said, it would be perfect for a road trip!

House of Glass by Sarah Pekkanen #audiobookreview #bookreview @macmillanaudio #smpinfluencers @stmartinspress

Overview

Wow, I loved this one so much! I didn’t want it to be over because I was enjoying it so much, but I couldn’t stop turning pages! House of Glass is a gripping thriller that was packed with surprises and compelling characters.”—Freida McFadden

The next thrilling novel from #1 New York Timesbestselling author Sarah Pekkanen, House of Glass.

On the outside they were the golden family with the perfect life. On the inside they built the perfect lie.

A young nanny who plunged to her death, or was she pushed? A nine-year-old girl who collects sharp objects and refuses to speak. A lawyer whose job it is to uncover who in the family is a victim and who is a murderer. But how can you find out the truth when everyone here is lying?

Rose Barclay is a nine-year-old girl who witnessed the possible murder of her nanny—in the midst of her parent’s bitter divorce—and immediately stopped speaking. Stella Hudson is a best interest attorney, appointed to serve as counsel for children in custody cases. She never accepts clients under thirteen due to her own traumatic childhood, but Stella’s mentor, a revered judge, believes Stella is the only one who can help.

From the moment Stella passes through the iron security gate and steps into the gilded, historic DC home of the Barclays, she realizes the case is even more twisted, and the Barclay family far more troubled, than she feared. And there’s something eerie about the house itself: It’s a plastic house, with not a single bit of glass to be found.

As Stella comes closer to uncovering the secrets the Barclays are desperate to hide, danger wraps around her like a shroud, and her past and present are set on a collision course in ways she never expected. Everyone is a suspect in the nanny’s murder. The mother, the father, the grandmother, the nanny’s boyfriend. Even Rose. Is the person Stella’s supposed to protect the one she may need protection from?

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Review

This story leads the reader on a merry chase! And I enjoyed it! I knew something was wrong in this house and with this family but I just had no idea what kind of twist was coming! And everyone, including the nine year old Rose, is a suspect.

Rose’s nanny has recently died. She fell or was pushed out her bedroom window. Now her parents are getting divorced. Stella Hudson is a best interest attorney, appointed to serve as counsel for children in custody cases. She never accepts clients under thirteen due to her own traumatic childhood, but Stella’s mentor, a revered judge, believes Stella is the only one who can help. As Stella comes closer to discovering the secrets surrounding this family, she knows she herself is in danger and time is running out.

I enjoyed how this author slowly reels you in. She creates such a web of deception and lies! Did Rose kill her Nanny? She keeps sharp objects hidden everywhere. And now she is not talking. What about Rose’s parents? Affairs were had!!!! And what about the grandmother? She has some unique ideas about who should have custody. You need to read this to find out!

The narrator, Laura Benanti, is not really my favorite. She tended to speed up during the intense sections. And, in general, too dramatic for me.

The Thirteenth Husband by Greer Macallister #audiobookreview #historicalfiction @recordedbooks

Overview

That’s about all we get out of life, rich or poor, isn’t it, a few hours of enjoyment here and there? I think it is folly to allow a single chance for pleasure to slip past you.”—Aimée Crocker, 1911

From the acclaimed author of The Arctic Fury and The Magician’s Lie

Tearing through millions of dollars, four continents, and a hearty collection of husbands, real-life heiress Aimée Crocker blazed an unbelievable trail of public notoriety, private pain, and the kind of strong independent woman the 1880s had never seen.

Her life was stranger than fiction and brighter than the stars, and she whirled through her days as if she was being chased. Greer Macallister brilliantly takes us into a world you won’t soon forget.

Review

Aimee Crocker’s father died when she was just a young girl. He left her millions of dollars for her inheritance. As Aimee grows up, she proceeds to keep the reporters busy with her extravagance and her many husbands.

I say this quite frequently, I love a book which has me researching. And believe me, I looked this lady up right from the get go. She was eccentric, extremely rich and never let anything get in her way. I mean, she got divorced in the late 1800s, almost completely unheard of for women. She partied with kings, visited mediums, and even married into Russian nobility.

She is a fascinating character, however, this story is a bit monotonous and long. I also felt the ending is a bit rushed. But I am so glad I read it. Aimee Crocker was indeed a unique person and I am I learned about her.

The narrator, Suzanne Toren, is just ok. This is going to sound weird, but, I could hear her smacking between sentences. It is more prevalent in the first half of the book, or maybe, I just got used to it.

The Body Next Door by Maia Chance #bookspotlight @harlequinbooks

Overview

Moody and mesmerizing, The Body Next Door takes readers on a twisty, creepy, and compelling ride through family dysfunction and betrayal.”
—Darby Kane, internationally bestselling author of The Engagement Party

They buried their secrets, but not deep enough…

Hannah McCullough’s life is far from perfect, but you’d never know it by looking at her. Instead, you’d see a beautiful young mother wholly devoted to her two children and a docile wife utterly besotted with her self-made millionaire husband, Allan. You’d see the designer clothes she wears, the luxury car she drives, the dewy-eyed au pair she employs.

You wouldn’t see the dark secret she carries.

But when a construction crew unearths the body of a young girl near the McCulloughs’ vacation home on Orcas Island, Hannah has no choice but to confront her past. She wonders how much Allan knows about the victim and the apocalyptic cult she was connected to. Meanwhile, Allan can’t seem to understand why his beautiful young bride, as polished and pristine as the collectible artifacts in his glass case, would threaten their fairy-tale lifestyle by digging too deep, in places she knows she shouldn’t.

As the police investigation into the gruesome discovery deepens, the facade of Hannah’s picture-perfect marriage starts to crumble, and she soon finds herself on a dire hunt for answers. And Hannah’s search takes an unexpected turn after she crosses paths with three strangers with shocking secrets of their own.
