Book Description
:

When the Angels attack, there’s NO REST FOR THE WICKED.
Father Montgomery, an elderly priest with a secret past, begins to investigate after his parishioners come under attack, and with the help of Jones, a young businessman with an estranged child, Montgomery begins to track down the origin of the Angels.

The Angels are naked and androgynous. They speak in a dreadful harmony with no clear leader. These aren’t biblical cherubs tasked with the protection of the righteous – these are deadly creatures of light that have the power to completely eradicate.

When Jones himself is attacked, Father Montgomery knows he has to act fast. He speaks to the Angels and organises a final showdown where he’s asked to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Book description

Eyes Like Lighthouses is Dane Cobain’s first book of poetry, distilled from the sweat of a thousand memorised performances in this reality and others. It’s not for the faint-hearted.

“I’ve never seen anyone do a stream of consciousness piece as talented as that. Very impressed.” – Mark Allsard-Will, author of Saskatch-A-Man and co-founder of Cuckoo’s Nest Press

Dane’s poetry is a multi-layered spiral of the macabre, quirky humour and disjointed imagery. Not only does he make you think, he captures the small forgotten moments of everyday life.” – Nikki Dudley, co-editor of Streetcake Magazine

The Blue Bath by Mary Waters-Sayer

OVERVIEW

Kat Lind, an American expatriate living in London with her entrepreneur husband and their young son, attends an opening at a prestigious Mayfair art gallery and is astonished to find her own face on the walls. The portraits are evidence of a long-ago love affair with the artist, Daniel Blake. Unbeknownst to her, he has continued to paint her ever since. Kat is seduced by her reflection on canvas and when Daniel appears in London, she finds herself drawn back into the sins and solace of a past that suddenly no longer seems so far away.

When the portraits catch the attention of the public, threatening to reveal not only her identity, but all that lies beyond the edges of the canvases, Kat comes face to face with the true price of their beauty and with all that she now could lose.

Moving between the glamour of the London art world and the sensuous days of a love affair in a dusty Paris studio, life and art bleed together as Daniel and Kat’s lives spin out of control, leading to a conclusion that is anything but inevitable.

REVIEW

Daniel is a not-so-famous artist, UNTIL…..he shows the portraits of a long lost love affair. Kat and her husband attend the opening at an art gallery.  She is amazed to see parts of herself on the walls.

This novel reminds me of Bridges of Madison County. It is very well written and the prose keeps you reading however, it is a bunch of fluff. I stayed mad at Kat most of the time. I was very dissappointed in her character as a person..and yes I am being a little judgemental. To me, she makes some very bad choices for no reason whatsoever. To me, Daniel and Kat are profoundly selfish.

I guess any book which can elicit such a strong feeling from the reader is not all that bad! Plus, The ending was surprising. It made the whole story worth reading.

I received this novel from Netgalley for a honest review.

No One Knows by J.T. Ellison #XOXperts

OVERVIEW

In an obsessive mystery as thrilling as The Girl on the Train and The Husband’s Secret, New York Times bestselling author J.T. Ellison will make you question every twist in her page-turning novel—and wonder which of her vividly drawn characters you should trust.

The day Aubrey Hamilton’s husband is declared dead by the state of Tennessee should bring closure so she can move on with her life. But Aubrey doesn’t want to move on; she wants Josh back. It’s been five years since he disappeared, since their blissfully happy marriage—they were happy, weren’t they?—screeched to a halt and Aubrey became the prime suspect in his disappearance. Five years of emptiness, solitude, loneliness, questions. Why didn’t Josh show up at his friend’s bachelor party? Was he murdered? Did he run away? And now, all this time later, who is the mysterious yet strangely familiar figure suddenly haunting her new life?

In No One Knows, the New York Times bestselling coauthor of the Nicholas Drummond series expertly peels back the layers of a complex woman who is hiding dark secrets beneath her unassuming exterior. This masterful thriller for fans of Gillian Flynn, Liane Moriarty, and Paula Hawkins will pull readers into a you’ll-never-guess merry-go-round of danger and deception. Round and round and round it goes, where it stops…no one knows.

REVIEW

Aubrey is a school teacher whose husband, Josh, has been missing for five years. The state of Tennessee finally declares Josh dead.  Aubrey cannot believe it. She feels deep down he is still alive and she cannot let go.

Every single character in this novel is flawed and screwed up!! There is no hero or knight in shining armor. I think this is one of the main reasons this tale is so enthralling. Each character plays a unique part in the deception.

The deceit and treachery running through this story really keep the reader riveted to the pages. Is he dead, is he alive, is he envolved in something??? The author did a great job keeping the outcome a secret.

There were many times in the story I just KNEW I had it figured out. There were many scenerios floating around my thoughts. So, needless to say, the ending was a bit of a shocker. I had part of it figured out but not all. I am trying desperately not to give any spoilers away. So be prepared.

A compelling tale indeed!!

I received this novel from Simon and Schuster as an XOXpert

Change of Scene by Mary Kay Andrews

OVERVIEW

This 100 page prequel novella to Mary Kay Andrews’s bestselling novel Beach Town is sure to delight fans and new readers alike.

Greer Hennessy is a movie location scout whose latest project has literally gone up in flames. After an avocado field accidentally catches fire on the set of her new movie, she is out of a job and practically run out of town. With her feisty grandmother Dearie, a Golden Age starlet who still has a lot of vigor left in her, complicating her life, Greer needs a bit of a rest. But Greer’s own mother then drops a bombshell on her that will change Greer’s life completely, and raise questions about her own father that she can’t ignore. In desperate need of a second chance, can Greer find what she’s looking for in the one last job she can get: a movie called BEACH TOWN? But first, she needs to find the perfect spot…

REVIEW

First of all…lightening fast read. Of course, it is a novella!

This started a little slow for me. But, in true MKA fashion, the story twists and turns and soon the reader is enveloped into the plot and there is no turning back.

Greer has made a huge mistake as a movie location scout. And as a result, she looses her job. This leaves her NO MONEY but plenty of time to reconnect with her family.

Dearie is her grandmother and BOY is she a pistol.  After getting kicked out of one nursing home, Greer must find her a new place to live. On top all this, Greer finds out her mother has cancer.

I love MKA! All her books are awesome. Great characters, funny and serious all at the same time. This mix is classic MKA and extremely entertaining. I have met her a few times and she is as magnificent as her books.

This is a prequel to MKA’s novel Beach Town.  Beach Town will be released in paperback on May 3, 2016.

I received this book from Netgalley for a honest review

Darkness by Karen Robards #XOXperts

OVERVIEW

New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards continues her penchant for “fantastic storytelling” (RT Book Reviews) with this next heart-pumping romantic suspense novel, the tale of a brilliant ornithologist trapped on the remote Attu Island in Alaska, fighting for her life—and that of a handsome stranger—before they’re swallowed up in darkness forever.

BOOM. That’s the sound that changes everything for Dr. Gina Sullivan, a renowned ornithologist on a group research grant trip on the remote island of Attu, Alaska. When an everyday outing turns sinister at the onset of one of Attu’s infamous storms, Gina expects thunder and lightning—but what she doesn’t see coming is the small jet plane that drops out of the sky and into the water mere feet from her boat. Even more unprecedented: there’s a sole survivor from the crash, and he needs Gina’s help. But it turns out that rescuing the stranger and getting them both out of the oncoming storm is just the beginning. Because the more Gina learns about James “Cal” Callahan, he of brooding eyes and muscled frame, the more she fears—for herself, and for him.

Cal has made a career of trading on government secrets and emerging unscathed—until a routine pickup goes horribly wrong and lands him in ice-cold water. Literally. He knows the plane crash was no accident and that there could very well be an enemy force currently combing the Alaskan island ensuring there were no survivors. Now if only the arrestingly beautiful bird-watcher with the clear-blue gaze would stop watching him, well, like a hawk. Cal convinces Gina to return to base camp and help him covertly get off the island. But when Gina makes it safely back to camp and finds her entire team murdered, all bets are off, and as darkness envelops the island, she must decide: trust a man she barely knows, or go it alone and risk running straight into the arms of a killer?

REVIEW

Gina is a professor studying birds on the island of Attu. She witnesses a plane crash. This is just not any plane crash! This is all about the murder of one of the plane’s passengers. When Gina finds a survivor, it turns her life around in more ways than one.

I have been in a reading slump lately. Started several, just couldn’t finish. When this novel came in my XOXpert shipment, I knew this would be a great read to move me out of my slump. I have not read a Karen Robards novel in a long time. This was like visiting an old friend.

This is the perfect beach read….it is set in on a COLD Alaska island called Attu. Perfect for a hot summer day!!!

The setting is amazing. I did not realize Attu was the only place a WWII battle was fought on American soil. Of course, I had to google it. I really want to visit this place someday!

Gina and Cal are at odds on many levels. They can argue with the best of them….then, as you can guess, they heat up the pages nicely. Gina takes no crap off of Cal! Makes the whole story very entertaining!

Start to finish, this is a divine read. The setting, the characters and the chase reveal an absorbing story!

I received this novel as part of the XOXperts.

Flare-Up by Felicity Young – BOOK SPOTLIGHT

Flare-UpBy Felicity Young

Genre: Fiction / Crime

Publisher: HarperCollins Australia

Outback murders, dodgy thieves, organised crime and arson – a small outback community is crackling with nerves, as Cam Fraser investigates.

Sergeant Cam Fraser’s letter of resignation is signed sealed but as yet undelivered. It’s sitting in the car when he travels out to help the wife of an old acquaintance with a bit of shearing. Rita’s husband Pizzle has gone missing so Cam is lending a hand, but there’s a stench around the shearing shed that he can’t ignore. What Cam finds when he searches inside will derail his plans for retirement and set a rural community — already on alert for an arsonist lighting bushfires — on edge.
Author Bio

Felicity was born in Germany and attended boarding school in the UK while her parents travelled the world with the British army. She thinks the long boring plane trips home played an important part in helping her to develop her creative imagination.

Felicity settled with her parents in Western Australia in 1976, became a nurse, married young and had three children. Not surprisingly, it took ten years to complete an Arts degree (English lit) at UWA.

In 1990 Felicity and her family moved to a small farm 40 kilometers NE of Perth where she established a Suffolk sheep stud, reared orphan kangaroos and embarked upon a life of crime writing.

On a nonfiction kick!!

I guess it is good to have diversity.  I didn’t even realize I was doing this!!! I bought these two books at The Southern Festival of Books and I just put them on my TBR shelves to be picked up later….well…I guess it’s later!!

As most of you know I am a huge baseball fan. I enjoyed this book immensely. Doc Graham was a generous, smart, and talented man. This is a very well written and informative book. Well researched and it covered his medical career as well as, his baseball career.

This touches on the many haunted places in different souther states. It is not limited to hospitals as the title says. This is a unique read. I enjoyed reading about the many haunted places in the south, especially Mississippi.  However, this is not well written. I wanted more information…or something was missing.
