Yeager’s Mission by Scott Bell

Yeager’s Mission

By Scott Bell

Genre: Thriller, Suspense

After a number of earthquakes hammer the Sierra Madre region of Mexico, Grupo Verdugo, a splinter group of cartel enforcers, takes control of the drug shipping routes through that territory. Caught in the middle, a small orphanage high in the mountains, desperate for supplies to care for the children and the battered earthquake victims, reaches out to Abel Yeager for help.

Yeager and his friend Victor agree to deliver the needed food and medicine. But Grupo Verdugo seems to have a special interest in starving out the clergy and forcing them to bend to their will. They send a man known as the Executioner to stop anyone daring to assist the people.

Yeager and Victor are in for the biggest fight of their lives as they are forced to move forty children, a dozen sick and injured patients, and one feisty doctor out of the mission and through mountains infested with vicious killers.

Review

I fell in love with Yeager in his first book  Yeager’s Law. You can read my review here.

This novel did not dissappoint. Sometimes the second novels tend to drift off. This one is true to form and kept me in love with the strong, silent Marine, Yeager.

Yeager is determined to help the orphans affected by the earthquake. Due to some drug cartel issues, this may be a problem. This does not stop him!! (As you would guess). He just keeps giving as good as he gets!

This book never lets up. Action-packed, humorous,  scary, and full of adrenaline, this novel has it all…and did I mention Yeager….he is one tough cookie and FINE! *sigh*

I received this novel for a honest review.

I Will Send Rain by Rae Meadows

Overview

Annie Bell can’t escape the dust. It’s in her hair, covering the windowsills, coating the animals in the barn, in the corners of her children’s dry, cracked lips. It’s 1934 and the Bell farm in Mulehead, Oklahoma is struggling as the earliest storms of The Dust Bowl descend. All around them the wheat harvests are drying out and people are packing up their belongings as storms lay waste to the Great Plains. As the Bells wait for the rains to come, Annie and each member of her family are pulled in different directions. Annie’s fragile young son, Fred, suffers from dust pneumonia; her headstrong daughter, Birdie, flush with first love, is choosing a dangerous path out of Mulehead; and Samuel, her husband, is plagued by disturbing dreams of rain.

As Annie, desperate for an escape of her own, flirts with the affections of an unlikely admirer, she must choose who she is going to become. With her warm storytelling and beautiful prose, Rae Meadows brings to life an unforgettable family that faces hardship with rare grit and determination. Rich in detail and epic in scope, I Will Send Rain is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience, filled with hope, morality, and love.

Review

First of all…this cover is amazing. Perfectly matched to the story.

Annie Bell and her family are in the middle of the dust bowl just struggling to survive.  Her family is falling apart. With a few bad decisions, it is a battle whichever way they turn.

This is a read you will not soon forget. It is a powerful tale about the hardships of life. The feelings this book creates are unforgettable.   It’s like you are there experiencing the dust, drought and hunger. The characters are tough as nails but create an amazing bond with the reader. Will the family survive or will they do as many others and uproot and move west?

The author did a superb job describing the dust and it’s aftermath. I just couldn’t imagine fighting that battle along with a drought and outlandish heat. The way each character reacts to these trials is a story in and of itself. Each one react differently and with great consequences. This is a story which stays with you days after you have finished.

Don’t think this story does not jerk a tear either. Believe me, it does!! I do not want to give away a spoiler, just letting you know to be prepared!

I would love a sequel to this tale. It would be great to hear if some of the bad decisions actually turn out ok.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

My Sweet Audrina AND Whitefern by V.C.Andrews #XOXperts

Overview

V.C. Andrews, author of the phenomenally successful Dollanganger series, has created a fascinating new cast of characters in this haunting story of love and deceit, innocence and betrayal, and the suffocating power of parental love.

Audrina Adare wanted so to be as good as her sister. She knew her father could not love her as he loved her sister. Her sister was so special, so perfect — and dead.

Now she will come face to face with the dangerous, terrifying secret that everyone knows. Everyone except…

My Sweet Audrina

Overview

The long-awaited sequel to My Sweet Audrina, one of V.C. Andrews’s strangest, most beloved books—and now a Lifetime movie! Whitefern swallowed Audrina’s childhood—and now the sprawling Victorian mansion threatens her adult life too…

Audrina remembers a better time, when her husband, Arden, was a young man with a heart filled with devotion for her. He didn’t used to be this ambitious, expansive…this cruel. But then, the death of Audina’s father changed a great many things.

When the reading of her father’s will reveals that Audrina herself will control fifty-one percent of the family brokerage—the halls of Whitefern again don’t feel safe. Arden’s protestations become frantic, nearly violent. And while Audrina didn’t anticipate running the family business, she’s curious to do so. And she can’t help but wonder what had made her father change his will at the last minute? What did he know about Arden that she didn’t?

Trapped in the middle of it all: her fragile, simple sister—the beautiful, trusting Sylvia. Audrina promised her father she’d watch over the young woman. But after years of relative quiet, the dark days of Whitefern may have returned…

Review

I have not read V.C. Andrews since high school and Flowers in the Attic (didnt everyone read this one!)  And since I have been in a small reading slump lately and what better than V.C Andrews to pull me out.

These books had me engrossed from the very start. Between the eerie house with the locked doors and strange places, to the  weird characters like Vera with her brittle bones and her Femme Fatale ways…this is V.C Andrews at its best.  The way these characters interact are unique and bizarre. Their deviant behavior just amazed me from the very first word.

The family is exactly what you expect from one of these books, weird, strange and downright creepy especially with their family secrets and lies! It is psychological drama that lures the reader in with the expectations for more darkness and creepiness.  And did I mention the house…yes…I did…the house..I want to explore so badly!!

I did find Whitefern a little less enchanting than My Sweet Audrina. I don’t know if I read them too close together or if my expectation was too much. But, I found that Audrina was a little more strange than in the first book, almost too whiney for my taste. I also caught a few errors and the story and the characters were a little flat and did not  capture my attention like the first book.

What a psycho, abnormal gothic horror series. The foreboding atmosphere create a strange, odd  world to totally get lost in. I cannot wait to see what weirdness the next installment will take.

I received these novels from Simon and Schuster as part of XOXperts

Benjamin’s Field Trilogy by J.J. Knights – BOOK SPOTLIGHT

Book One: Rescue

Forward by retired NASA astronaut Jay Apt, PhD, veteran of four space shuttle missions.
Benjamin’s Field: Rescue’ has been awarded a five-star review by the literary site ‘Reader’s Favorite’ (readersfavorite.com).

Benjamin’s Field follows a rural farm family over the course of sixty years from the viewpoint of the youngest member, Jeremy Kyner. Beginning with America’s entry into World War I, Jeremy and his family are followed through war, peace, triumph, tragedy, heartbreak, and final happiness as the reader examines the role of family loyalty versus individual need, personal liberty and how it relates to society’s demands, religious prejudice, racism, intolerance, the role of charity, and the overwhelming need for humans to forgive one another. While still in manuscript form, Benjamin’s Field, Book One, Rescue, was advanced to the “Best Sellers Chart” of the peer review website YouWriteOn.com. In Book One, “Rescue,” a widowed farmer suffers an unspeakable loss during World War I. Burdened with grief, he learns from his nemesis, a dogmatic Catholic priest, that his son’s fiance has given birth to their crippled child. Unable to cope with the child’s deformity and confounded by his illegitimate birth, the farmer is battered by those closest to him with accusations of cruelty and intolerance until he finally reveals his true feelings and the reasons underlying his apparent bigotry. Set in a historical context, Benjamin’s Field is a compelling story about human dignity overcoming adversity, prejudice, and hatred. Interwoven with lighter moments, this dramatic and moving tale will take the reader on an emotional and sometimes humorous journey.”

Book Two: Ascent

In Book Two, “Ascent,” Jeremy Kyner, now a teenaged boy, becomes the focus of his teacher’s animosity because of his infirmity. With the help of two dedicated school friends and an unconventional Jewish blacksmith, he takes to the sky, defeating his teacher’s plans to institutionalize him and forcing her to divulge her own, dark, secret.

Benjamin’s Field is a historical novel about human dignity overcoming adversity, prejudice, and hatred. Interwoven with lighter moments, this dramatic and moving story will take the reader on a journey of inner exploration.

Book Three: Emancipation
Book Three, “Emancipation,” opens as America is on the cusp of World War II. Jeremy Kyner, now a man, is barred from military service at a time when America is almost defenseless against marauding German submarines. Finally joining a group of volunteer civilian pilots that represents the country’s best hope to counter the Germans, Jeremy confronts a deadly enemy from an unexpected quarter and is offered a chance of achieving final emancipation.

Benjamin’s Field is a historical novel about human dignity overcoming adversity, prejudice, and hatred. Interwoven with lighter moments, this dramatic and moving novel will take the reader on a journey of inner exploration.

Trojan by David Wallace – Book Spotlight

Trojan

By David L. Wallace

Genre: Thriller

Victor Walker’s sole responsibility as Sr. Manager of White House Defense Armament Systems, was to ensure America’s flagship armament servers remained up and operational, to protect against major attacks, both foreign and domestic. His performance garnered him praise for his genius from both the office of the President and the Secretary of Defense.

On the evening of August 7th, a dark cloud overshadowed his otherwise bright and shining existence. Suddenly and without warning, all flagship armament servers crashed – a complete meltdown. Star Wars, Air Force One, Doomsday Briefcase and Guidance Systems were all rendered useless. As Victor raced to ID the root cause of the disaster to avert a non-defensible strike on America, he found something didn’t pass the smell test. Indicators pointed to a rodent on the loose – to a Trojan – to a mole within America’s government that was assisting a hostile enemy.

The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict

Overview

A vivid and mesmerizing novel about the extraordinary woman who married and worked with one of the greatest scientists in history.

What secrets may have lurked in the shadows of Albert Einstein’s fame? His first wife, Mileva “Mitza” Marić, was more than the devoted mother of their three children—she was also a brilliant physicist in her own right, and her contributions to the special theory of relativity have been hotly debated for more than a century.

In 1896, the extraordinarily gifted Mileva is the only woman studying physics at an elite school in Zürich. There, she falls for charismatic fellow student Albert Einstein, who promises to treat her as an equal in both love and science. But as Albert’s fame grows, so too does Mileva’s worry that her light will be lost in her husband’s shadow forever.

A literary historical in the tradition of The Paris Wife and Mrs. Poe, The Other Einstein reveals a complicated partnership that is as fascinating as it is troubling.

Review

A truly fascinating read. I enjoyed so many things about this book, the science, the time period and the characters.

I love learning when I read. I guess that is why I find historical fiction so appealing. This is a wonderful book that fits the bill! I never knew Einstein was married to another physicist. What a strong woman Mileva must have been. To succeed during an era where only men were allowed to, was an amazing feat indeed. Then to get divorced! She was truly ahead of her time.

The only reason I give this 4 stars is I wanted more! It is a fiction book and I understand that. But, I wanted to feel more attached to Mileva. I wanted more embellishments.

This is still an amazing and intriguing read! It is not to be missed by any historical fiction reader!

Resolution Huck Finn’s Greatest Adventure by Andrew Joyce

Resolution: Huck Finn’s Greatest Adventure

By Andrew Joyce

Genre: Historical Fiction/Action Adventure

It is 1896 in the Yukon Territory, Canada. The largest gold strike in the annals of human history has just been made; however, word of the discovery will not reach the outside world for another year.

By happenstance, a fifty-nine- year-old Huck Finn and his lady friend, Molly Lee, are on hand, but they are not interested in gold. They have come to that neck of the woods seeking adventure.

Someone should have warned them, “Be careful what you wish for.”

When disaster strikes, they volunteer to save the day by making an arduous six hundred mile journey by dog sled in the depths of a Yukon winter. They race against time, nature, and man.

With the temperature hovering around seventy degrees below zero, they must fight every day if they are to live to see the next.

On the frozen trail, they are put upon by murderers, hungry wolves, and hostile Indians, but those adversaries have nothing over the weather. At seventy below, your spit freezes a foot from your face. Your cheeks burn—your skin turns purple and black as it dies from the cold. You are in constant danger of losing fingers and toes to frostbite.

It is into this world that Huck and Molly race.

They cannot stop. They cannot turn back. They can only go on. Lives hang in the balance—including theirs.

Review

Huck, and yes I mean the real Huck Finn, and Molly are on their greatest adventure yet. I love how the author has taken two famous fictional characters, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, and created a tale around their middle aged selves. Huck Finn met Molly years ago and by happenstance meet up again and never part ways.

I was intrigued from the very start just by the characters alone then the story takes the reader on an adventure like none other. I felt every wind chill and every fear, including the wolves!!!! The time period and the setting alone are enough to keep the reader moving along. But then the Indians and nature start to take its course and this story is unstoppable.

This novel is part of a series however, it is a very nice stand alone read.

I received this novel for a honest review

Paper Castles by Terry Lee

Paper Castles
By Terri Lee
Genre: Romance/Women’s Fiction
IN SAVANNAH GEORGIA, THE GARDENS AREN’T THE ONLY THINGS KEEPING SECRETS.
“I want to know what goes on in your head,” Adam said. “What do you think about? What are your dreams?”

“My dreams,” Savannah said, picking up her spoon and stirring her coffee again. She stared into the swirling depths as if she could conjure up the specter of the girl who once had dreams to spare. “Funny thing is—I got everything I wanted.”

Where do you go when you find out everything you wanted isn’t what you need?

Savannah Palmerton picks up a brush and heads to an art class, desperate to find a piece of the girl she used to be, before the country club dances and the boring dinner party conversations. In 1963 the country is still playing in her innocence, but there are rumblings beneath the surface. The fabric of America is just beginning to fray around the edges. So it is in Savannah Palmerton’s life.

Love, betrayal and family secrets create a lethal cocktail that has Savannah’s world unraveling at her feet. Set against a southern backdrop of garden parties and civil rights marches, Paper Castles is a sultry mix of sweet-tea and murder. Sex and secrets.

Paper Castles is the best kind of love story. Where a woman must first learn to love herself.

Review

Basically, Savannah is unhappy in her life, even though she has received everything she has every wanted. She starts to explore her options….

I found Savannah to be a little selfish and maybe just a tad whiney. I love strong women characters and Savannah did not make the cut. I also, truly, madly, deeply dispised her husband. Of course, it is 1963 and many things have changed, but he just absolutely tripped my trigger.

This is a story about family, secrets and betrayal on the largest level. There is a lot HEAT and many twists and turns.  The tale keeps you fascinated, that is for sure!

I love, love, love the setting of this book!! Savannah, GA and Tybee Island, GA are wonderful places. I do wish the author talked more about these historic towns. Could have added a lot to the story for me.

I received this novel from the author for a honest review.

Author Bio

ROMANCE MAY BE PRETTY BUT LOVE STORIES ARE REAL.
Down every road is a story. The telling of my story has a distinct before and after quality to it. My life before, was a love story. A Hallmark movie. With a couple of I Love Lucy episodes thrown in for good measure. Boy meets girl in High School. Sweeps her off her feet and marries her. But after 41 years of love and laughter the bottom fell out with the uttering of one little word. Cancer. A love I thought I’d grow old in, slipped away in the middle of the night. Leaving me to ask, what now?

Thankfully the writing that sustained me through my entire life was there to catch me when I fell. At first I poured it all out onto the pages of my journal. A mix of words, ink, and tears tucked safely between the leather covers.

Here I am in the after part of my story. But the after is also the NOW. Eventually the purging of emotion led me back to another story that had been pushed to the back burner during trying times. Characters who had been waiting patiently began to nudge and push. It was time to sit down at the computer and let the story be told. Let the healing begin.

When I ask the question, who am I now?…I realize though the road may have changed, I’m still a storyteller.

If it’s one thing I know about, it’s love. But I’m not interested in simply writing about; boy meets girl. My tag line is: Romance may be pretty but love stories are real. And that’s where I want to be when I’m writing…down deep where the real story lives. Because love is messy. And glorious. I want to roll around in a story and fall in love. Want to come with me?
