Before Everything by Victoria Redel

Overview

Before Everything is a celebration of friendship and love between a group of women who have known each another since they were girls. They’ve faced everything together, from youthful sprees and scrapes to mid-life turning points. Now, as Anna, the group’s trailblazer and brightest spark, enters hospice, they gather to do what they’ve always done—talk and laugh and help each other make choices and plans, this time in Anna’s rural Massachusetts home. Helen, Anna’s best friend and a celebrated painter, is about to remarry. The others face their own challenges—Caroline with her sister’s mental health crisis; Molly with a teenage daughter’s rebellion; Ming with her law practice—dilemmas with kids and work and love. Before Everything is as funny as it is bittersweet, as the friends revel in the hilarious mistakes they’ve seen each another through, the secrets kept, and adventures shared. But now all sense of time has shifted, and the pattern of their lives together takes on new meaning. The novel offers a brilliant, emotionally charged portrait, deftly conveying the sweep of time over everyday lives, and showing how even in difficult endings, gifts can unfold. Above all it is an ode to friendship, and to how one person shapes the journeys of those around her.

Review

This book was sort of blah for me. I was really surprised it hit me this way. This type of book is usually right in my wheelhouse. It started pretty depressing to begin with. Then the characters were completely disconnected to each other and the reader. I was shocked with the pettiness some of the characters showed.  I mean…one of their best friends is dying and they are wondering why they are not liked by the other women in the group. Come on…what’s important here! I did eventually bail on the book. I gave it a good ole college try. I made it through a quarter of the book before I decided it wasn’t for me. I usually don’t post bad reviews because the author works very hard to put a book out in the world. And this is just MY OPINION.

I received this novel from Netgalley for a honest review.

Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan #XOXperts

Overview

In this second of the sultry, Western-set Coming Home series from New York Times bestselling author Harper Sloan, Quinn Davis might finally have a shot at her own happily-ever-after—but will she let love in, or will she tell it to go ahead and kiss her boots?

Quinn Davis prefers to live her life quietly. She’s the stereotypical tomboy with two overprotective big brothers who have always been there to protect her, especially from devilishly handsome cowboys with silver tongues. That is, until Tate Montgomery comes riding into town. Their first meeting, however, is far from something out of a fairy tale and only further convinces Quinn that men aren’t worth her time.

The only place Tate Montgomery ever truly felt at home growing up was during the long, sweltering summer months he spent at his Gram and Paw’s farm in Pine Oak, Texas. Now, Tate has returned to his childhood sanctuary seeking a fresh start—but if he’s being entirely honest, he’s not just back for the wranglers and Stetsons. During those summers, Quinn was a friend-turned-young-love who Tate lost when life threw him a curveball and he cut all ties to his past; but all it takes is one glance at the raven-haired beauty he did his best to forget for him to realize just how much he’s been missing….

Review

Quinn has been hurt by Tate in the past. Never in a million years did she think she would ever hear from him again. Then comes the phone call….totally rocks her world!

First off…I love the title! And Quinn is not afraid to say it! She is a tough ol’girl and she can remodel a truck like nobody’s business. This is one of the things I love about Harper Sloan. Her female characters are no nonsense  and usually work hard to create their own world before they bring a guy into it. Especially Quinn, she doesn’t need a man.  She is her own person!

Tate is a fine, sexy, hot….oh heck…I could go on and on! Let me start again. Tate is a fine, sexy doctor. He fell in love with Quinn years ago. But circumstances pulled them apart. I don’t want to spoil anything….but this gets hot and spicy!! 🌶 🔥💋

This is the second in a series. I have read the first one,  The Lost Rider.  It is not necessary to read them in order.  But, neither one is to be missed.  Each have great characters, quirky sayings (I laughed so hard at a few, I nearly fell off the couch!) and steamy, sexy scenes. I  cannot wait for the next in the series…no way am I missing it!!

I received this novel from Simon and Schuster as part of the XOXPERTS.

Polio and Me by Ken Dalton

Overview

Polio and Me

By Ken Dalton

Genre: Personal memoir {discovery of polio vaccine}

The year is 1943. A five year old boy wakes up. He cannot stand or hold an apple in his hand. The boy is rushed to his family doctor, diagnosed with polio, and taken from his mother’s arms to the contagion ward at the county hospital.

Thus begins his eleven year journey of surgeries, rehabilitation, and therapy so that one day, he can walk, unaided, across a stage and receive his high school diploma.

While the boy struggles through his childhood, and in spite decades of research, polio epidemics continue to paralyze and kill hundreds of thousands of adults and children well into the late 1950’s.

Polio and Me provides the heartbreaking story of polio’s devastating past, the struggle to overcome present, and promising future.

Review

There is many things I want to say about this memoir.  I learned so much. I love a book which has me doing research. This book had me on Google through most of it!

I cannot imagine going through what this author went through. How far we have come with healthcare.  When he is taken away at 5 years of age from his parents…no hospital would dream of doing that now. And the disability access he could not have at school….amazing how things have changed.

Being a pharmacist, I enjoyed the science part of this book. The developing of the vaccine was of great interest to me. I vaguely remember studying this in school.  It was fascinating to learn all the many obstacles and problems related to finding a vaccine. And how fortunate we are, these scientists went to all this trouble.

Sometimes the author repeats himself. This repetition can get a little confusing, especially if you are reading on a ereader…you think you accidentally paged turned. But, this is a compelling read with many wonderful aspects.  Kudos to the author for all he went through and overcame!

About the Author

Ken Dalton was born in Los Angeles in 1938. In 1943 he contracted polio and spent the next eleven years of his childhood in and out of hospitals.

After a successful thirty-eight year management career with Pacific Telephone Company, Ken retired to write golf and travel articles for Golf Digest, Golf Illustrated, Fairways and Greens, and Golf.com. During two NBC-TV Celebrity Golf Tournaments at Lake Tahoe, he interviewed Olympic Decathlon Champion, Bruce Jenner when he was Bruce, not Caitlyn, the mischievous Chicago Bears quarterback, Jim McMahon, the iconic Vice-President Dan Quail, and NBC Today show anchor, Matt Lauer.

Ken designed, built, and operated a 2000 case winery named Pommeraie Vineyards where he produced award winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

He has published six mystery novels, The Bloody Birthright, The Big Showstopper, Death is a Cabernet, The Tartan Shroud, Brother Can You Spare A Dime, and The Unsavory Critic.

Love, Alabama by Susan Sands

Overview

Emma Laroux’s a fallen Southern beauty queen whose past is barely whispered about in her small town. But the secrets and lies surrounding her scandal still haunt her, and something about Matthew Pope may hold the answers…if only she could put her finger on it.

Matthew Pope wonders what awful karmic thing he’s done to land him in Podunk, Alabama. But when he sees Emma Laroux again after all this time, he knows he’s still the only one who holds the key to unlocking the truth of her past…

Will a shared moment in time ten years ago threaten the best thing that’s ever happened to them – each other?

Review

Emma is a retired beauty queen. She runs her own business and keeps to herself as much as possible. Enter Matthew, who rocks her world when she least expects it.

Both of these characters are flawed and have had some terrible experiences in life. This is, to me, why they hit it off. They each recognize the damage and the strength in each other. As their pasts unfold it brings them closer until….Matthew has a secret!!

I never understand why characters don’t come clean when given the perfect opportunity.  It would make life so much simpler.  Which, I guess is why the author chooses not to do it. It keeps the story moving. Matthew has ample opportunity to tell Emma (and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why he didn’t want her to know). What would it change if she knew. His secret, in my opinion, is not that big of a deal. But, like I said, my opinion.

I did enjoy the setting of Alabama. Being a Mississippi girl, I felt right at home with all the small town characters.  The author did a fabulous job with all the quirky southern ways and especially the southern sayings. I caught myself grinning through most of this book because of the southern antics.

There is a twist at the end but it is rushed and almost like it was added as an afterthought. BUT! I did enjoy this book. It is cute, quirky and fun to read. It hit the right spot!

I received this novel from Netgalley for a honest review.

North to You by Tif Marcelo #XOXperts

Overview

In this warmhearted and charming debut from Tif Marcelo, a food truck chef and her long lost Army love clash when they cross paths in San Francisco.

Camille Marino has got a full plate. As the sole guardian of her eighteen-year-old sister and the head chef and owner of a food truck, she’s used to life being a juggling act. With food to cook, social media accounts to manage, and a little sister to look after, she doesn’t have time for much else.

That is, until Drew Bautista walks back into her life.

Drew is Camille’s former high school crush and he returns to San Francisco to repair his relationship with his father before he ships out for deployment. By helping his father renovate his failing Filipino restaurant, he hopes to win back his respect. But when sparks fly between Drew and Camille—his father’s major competition and sworn enemy—Drew is conflicted. Should he join his father in the war against her food truck? Or surrender to the woman who’s given him a second chance at love?

Review

Camille is in the restaurant truck business (a unique story line!).  She not only owns her on business, she is guardian to her little sister.  To say her life is tough and busy is an understatement.  Then she runs into her old flame 🔥!  He complicates her life in a good way…until…..she parks her ugly food truck in front of his father’s restaurant.

I love the setting of this book. San Francisco is an amazing city. I enjoyed the many city attractions the author placed throughout this tale.  We visited several years ago and I fell in love, especially Haight-Ashberry. This is the location where Drew and Camille run into each other and start their amazing relationship.

Drew!! Oh sweet, heavenly Drew! Not only is Drew hot..especially in the army t-shirt…YES..I so pictured that in my head, he is kind and loving….just not all together truthful. And that gets his cute little behind in hot water. He has a legitimate reason for not exactly telling the truth. Does it turn out the way he planned? Not so much!

Camille is one tough lady. I LOVE STRONG FEMALE LEADS! Camille is hardworking, smart and just an all around good gal. She and Drew are fantastic together. Even when his little secret comes out. Of course she is mad and fiery. What a way to heat up the pages!

I so enjoy warm, quirky, fun reads. This one had a little bit of everything, great setting, great story, strong woman and one hot guy to boot! I cannot wait to see what this author has up her sleeve next. Need a good summer read…..this is it for you!

Master of Alaska by Roger Seiler

Master of Alaska

By Roger Seiler

Genre: Historical Fiction, Historical Romance

Book Description

The detail and research that author Roger Seiler used – from biographies to actual letters and reports by the Governor Baranov himself – creates a riveting story.

Master of Alaska – a compelling Historical Fiction about the first governor of Alaska sent to the colony by Russia in 1790 – George Washington was President at the time. Master of Alaska starts in October 1790 when Aleksandr Baranov left his family in Russia and sails across the North Pacific to Kodiak to become the chief manager for Tsarina Catherine the Great’s colony in the far Northwest of North America. Baranov is shipwrecked, saved and adopted by the Aleut natives. Later he is forced to marry Anooka the daughter of the tribal chief, despite still having a wife back in Russia to save his men from starvation. Only slated to serve five years, Baranov spends the next 28 years in Alaska, surviving natural disasters, a massacre of his people at Sitka, meddling competing Russian authorities, a British attempt to undermine his colony and an assassination attempt. Interestingly, Baranov’s native wife and teenage daughter play an intricate role and contribute much to his success and survival in Alaska. Baranov built an empire and sought peace with the warring Tlingit, and thanks largely to his efforts Alaska is part of the U.S. today.

Review

The first Govenor of Alaska!! Wow!  Baranov was a tough old bird!! The wilds of Alaska comes out in droves in this read. Baranova is shipwrecked, starved, saved, starved again, but he comes out on top.

What a read. This is a very well researched historical account of the beginning of Alaska.  I am amazed at the intricacies that weave throughout this novel. The politics in Russia which lead to Baranov setting sail for parts unknown.  Also, the politics of the Aleut natives, or maybe I should say, the customs of the natives, really create a unique tale for history buffs.

I love all books set in Alaska. Why? I really could not tell you. This read was enjoyable to me because of the setting and the history woven within. That being said, it is a little long winded and wordy in places. But, enjoyable nonetheless!

I received this book from the author for a honest review.

Excerpt: Nanuq (p. 38)

INTRO: After being rescued from their shipwreck on Unalaska Island by the Aleuts, Aleksandr Baranov and his Russian crew of 53 men had faced a food supply problem. Baranov solved the problem by learning the Aleut’s methods of seal hunting and then killed enough seals to provide food through the arriving winter.

As he and his men prepared to leave for Kodiak up the Alaska Peninsula in large Aleut rowboats,Toyon Putuguq invited Baranov into his big barabara next to a ceremonial fire, along with Kuponek and some other Aleut men. The room was quiet as the men entered and took their places around the central fireplace. Baranov saw this was going to be an important ceremony and payed close attention.

After another long and silent moment, Toyon Putuguq spoke to Baranov in the Aleut language, which Baranov by then knew well: “Baranov has learned Native ways. Baranov is the only Russian who learned to hunt well with Native ways and speak our language well. And Baranov worked for the village, not just himself. “Now Baranov is part Aleut,” he continued. “So now, as toyon, I give Baranov an Aleut name: Nanuq, blessed by the sacred fire spirit. Nanuq is the polar bear, the great white hunter.

”With your Native name, I give this skin of Nanuq. I got it from an Eskimo up north. It has great powers.”

Baranov Meets Anooka (p. 82)

INTRO: After Aleksandr Baranov had reached the Russian settlement at Three Saints Bay on Kodiak Island, he took command of the colony. The Aleut village chief, named Grigor by the Russians, had learned to speak Russian and invited Baranov into his longhouse to confer. As they sat in front of the central fire, Baranov took from his pocket a bright copper plate engraved with Tsarina Catherine’s coat of arms and gave it to Chief Grigor as a gift.

Chief Grigor’s eyes widened in amazement as he examined the copper plate closely. “This is important,” he said.

It was exactly the reaction Baranov wanted. He continued, “I look for a long future of friendship between us. We can help each other in many ways. I must explore Montague Island, over here, and need some of your men as guides.”

”Great Nanuq, do you have a woman?”

Baranov was taken aback. “I have a wife in Russia.”

”In Russia? What good is that? Take my daughter for wife. Then I be your father, and we work together as one. This way we make powerful alliance.”

Before Baranov could react, Chief Grigor turned and called out to his daughter in his Native tongue, “Anooka, come here!”

From a dim recess of the lodge, a slender seventeen-year-old in deerskins approached with unusual youthful dignity. She had glistening long, black hair flowing over her shoulders, and set in an oval face were the high cheek bones common to many Natives. Her big, warm, brown eyes looked out from under lovely arched eyebrows. Clear, tan skin, a straight, pretty nose, and a mouth with soft lips completed her. To Baranov, Anooka was strikingly beautiful. Though reserved, the self-confidence of her rank allowed her to glance at the strange Russian in front of her, and then she faced her father.

In the Kenaitze dialect of the Alutiiq language, the chief told her, “Turn around and face the great Russian Nanuq.” She did so. With no hint of shyness, she looked Baranov right in his eyes. Her intelligent dark eyes held his stare as an equal for a long moment, until she yielded a slight smile, revealing perfect white teeth, and looked down.

Nanuq quickly collected himself and, wanting to get back to the negotiations for guides, replied, “Chief Grigor, your offer is most generous. But as I said, I already have a wife in Russia.”

Grigor insisted, “But not here. How long has it been, great Nanuq, since you’ve had a wife at your side?”

Baranov stared at him in silence. He didn’t want to offend the man, but the proposal was absurd.

The chief tried once more. Certainly an alliance with this Russian Nanuq would greatly benefit his own stature in the eyes of his people—and especially their southern enemies, the hated Tlingit.

”I see. Well, you need a wife here! And we need a strong alliance.”

”A Russian can only have one wife.”

”Poor man! Poor man!” said Grigor in mild disappointment. He knew that making such alliances, especially with one as strong as Nanuq, could take time and much negotiation. But just how strong was Nanuq, anyway? Maybe he should be tested. There was more than one way to impress the Tlingit with Kenaitze power. Grigor motioned to Anooka to return to her work.

“Well, then, the least I can do for you is give you the guides you need.”

Anooka sat on a blanket in the back of the longhouse, where she had been making a bear claw necklace for her father. Why did Father want to give her to this man? Though short, he looked strong and intelligent, but strange. Could she ever want him? She knew what she wanted would count for nothing. Her father would decide, and she had to trust him to choose well for her. She would ask one thing: that her father wait until he really knew a man before he made his choice. As his daughter, she deserved at least that, and the chief had only just met this Nanuq.

Baranov looked into the shadows for Anooka, straining for another glimpse of her youthful beauty. Grigor noticed.

Kiss Carlo by Adriana Trigiani

Overview

From Adriana Trigiani, the beloved New York Times-bestselling author of The Shoemaker’s Wife, comes an exhilarating epic novel of love, loyalty, and creativity—the story of an Italian-American family on the cusp of change.

It’s 1949 and South Philadelphia bursts with opportunity during the post-war boom. The Palazzini Cab Company & Western Union Telegraph Office, owned and operated by Dominic Palazzini and his three sons, is flourishing: business is good, they’re surrounded by sympathetic wives and daughters-in-law, with grandchildren on the way. But a decades-long feud that split Dominic and his brother Mike and their once-close families sets the stage for a re-match.

Amidst the hoopla, the arrival of an urgent telegram from Italy upends the life of Nicky Castone (Dominic and his wife’s orphaned nephew) who lives and works with his Uncle Dom and his family. Nicky decides, at 30, that he wants more—more than just a job driving Car #4 and more than his longtime fiancée Peachy DePino, a bookkeeper, can offer. When he admits to his fiancée that he’s been secretly moonlighting at the local Shakespeare theater company, Nicky finds himself drawn to the stage, its colorful players and to the determined Calla Borelli, who inherited the enterprise from her father, Nicky must choose between the conventional life his family expects of him or chart a new course and risk losing everything he cherishes.

From the dreamy mountaintop village of Roseto Valfortore in Italy, to the vibrant streets of South Philly, to the close-knit enclave of Roseto, Pennsylvania, to New York City during the birth of the golden age of television, Kiss Carlo is a powerful, inter-generational story that celebrates the ties that bind, while staying true to oneself when all hope seems lost.

Told against the backdrop of some of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, this novel brims with romance as long buried secrets are revealed, mistaken identities are unmasked, scores are settled, broken hearts are mended and true love reigns. Trigiani’s consummate storytelling skill and her trademark wit, along with a dazzling cast of characters will enthrall readers. Once again, the author has returned to her own family garden to create an unforgettable feast. Kiss Carlo is a jubilee, resplendent with hope, love, and the abiding power of la famiglia.

Review

Isn’t the cover just FABULOUS!! You can’t tell from the picture but the paper is all bright and shiny! #coverlove!

This book is a little slow starting but it kicks in and you just fall in love with everyone!! Especially Nicky. Even when he makes a decision you want him to make…but yet you don’t want him to make …Capisce??? You must read the book to find out what I am talking about!!

This book starts in Italy, moves to Pennsylvania where everything takes place. Nicky is a taxi driver and is part of a large Italian family. And I mean LARGE. Nothing like a big Italian family in the midst of a love story!  There are lots of characters to keep up with but each are different and this adds so much to the story. I especially love the dispatcher/telegram operator, Hortense. She is an excellent minor character which keeps everyone in line! She has such a great sense of humor.  She keeps everything rocking and rolling.

I am not going to give anything away…and I soooooo want to. There is a lot of Italian, Shakespeare, love, food and impersonations. Yes…impersonations.

I just love, love, love this book!! She told me I would and I did!! She, I mean Adriana Trigiani herself. And she is super amazing!!

I met Adriana Trigiani for the first time this year at BEA. She was absolutely my favorite author. We talked Nabs and Jackson, MS. (Read Big Stone Gap to find out about nabs…if you are a Yankee…southerners know all about them. They are a staple!) This lady stayed over an hour past her signing time to sign everyone a book who was in line! She loves her readers!

Also…my bag came from Kindred Spirit.  I had tons of people at the expo who wanted it! Check out their styles.

Review

First off let me say…I love this cover! So inviting.

Vanessa finds old letters in a coffee can. They are love letters suggesting a arduous, secret love affair. Little does Vanessa know…these letters lead to a shocking revelation of hidden secrets of her own past.

This is such a sweet read. Vanessa needs her life transformed and the letters give her a new purpose to find the lovers.  This creates many opportunities for her. It also opens up a new world for her to experience.

This book states the obvious, repeats a few phrases, and is overly dramatic in places. The story does keep you interested. The mystery surrounding the letters is very creative and moving!

Great for a beach read!
