An Alaskan Christmas by Jennifer Snow @harlequinbooks #review #christmasromance

Overview

In Alaska, it’s always a white Christmas—but the sparks flying between two reunited friends could turn it red-hot…

If there’s one gift Erika Sheraton does not want for Christmas, it’s a vacation. Ordered to take time off, the workaholic surgeon reluctantly trades in her scrubs for a ski suit and heads to Wild River, Alaska. Her friend Cassie owns a tour company that offers adventures to fit every visitor. But nothing compares to the adrenaline rush Erika feels on being reunited with Cassie’s brother, Reed Reynolds.

Gone is the buttoned-up girl Reed remembers. His sister’s best friend has blossomed into a strong, skilled, confident woman. She’s exactly what his search-and-rescue team needs—and everything he didn’t know he craved. The gulf between his life in Wild River and her big-city career is wide. But it’s no match for a desire powerful enough to melt two stubborn hearts…

Review

Erika has been ORDERED to take a vacation. A vacation is what she DOES NOT want. So, she is determined to make the best of a bad situation. She contacts an old friend, Cassie, and heads off for an adventure in Wild River, Alaska. And an adventure is just what she finds, along with something she was not looking for…love.

Reed is Cassie’s brother. He runs a search-and-rescue team. He and Erika knock heads a few times, but it just leads them to discover what they love about each other. I enjoyed Reed. He is tough, smart and HOT! What’s not to love. He and Erika make a great pair!

Give me a book set in Alaska and I am hooked. This is a sweet holiday romance with an edge. Check it out today!

Coming Home for Christmas by RaeAnne Thayne @harlequinbooks @raeannethayne #review #christmasromance

Overview

New York Times bestselling author RaeAnne Thayne returns to Haven Point to bring readers another heartwarming and inspiring story of Christmas romance—this time for Luke and Elizabeth Hamilton, a couple greatly in need of holiday healing and the magic of Christmas!

Hearts are lighter and wishes burn a little brighter at Christmas…

Elizabeth was trapped in a tangle of postpartum depression and grief after the death of her beloved parents and she couldn’t quite see the way back to her husband and their two beautiful kids…until a car accident stole away her memories and changed her life.

And when she finally remembered the sound of little Cassie’s laugh, the baby powder smell of Bridger, or the feel of her husband’s hand in hers, Elizabeth worried that they’d moved on without her. That she’d missed too much. That perhaps she wasn’t the right mother for her kids or wife for Luke, no matter how much she loved them.

But now, seven years later, Luke finds her in a nearby town and brings Elizabeth back home to the family she loves, just in time for Christmas. And being reunited with Luke and her children is better than anything Elizabeth could have imagined.

As they all trim the tree and bake cookies, making new holiday memories, Elizabeth and Luke are drawn ever closer. Can the hurt of the past seven years be healed over the course of one Christmas season and bring the Hamiltons the gift of a new beginning?

Review

Elizabeth has always had some form of depression. But, add postpartum depression on top of the recent death of her parents and it is just too much to bear. She leaves her family one night to protect them from herself and ends up disappearing for seven years. Due to a head injury from a car accident, Elizabeth lost her memory. When her memory finally returns, she is too afraid to go back.

Luke is determined to clear his name. He has been accused of Elizabeth’s death. Even though no body has been found, the district attorney is resolute in her decision that Luke killed his wife the night she left. Luke has secretly known for a while where his estranged wife is living. Luke has a lot of animosity toward Elizabeth so, he has no desire to allow her back into their lives. But…to clear his name…he shows up at her door.

This is a very unique Christmas romance story. Even though you can guess the outcome. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding what happened the night Elizabeth left. And how did Luke actually find her? And it’s not all romance and roses when she shows back up in her family’s life. Oh no…it’s tough on everyone.

Need an uncommon Christmas story with a familiar outcome. This one is for you. This is about overcoming past hurts to become a family again!

Summary:

A haunting thriller about a woman who attempts to save her brother’s life by making a dangerous pact with a network of vigilantes who’ve been hunting down the predators of Los Angeles.

Jazz can’t let her younger brother die.

Their foster mother Carol has always been fanatical, but with Jazz grown up and out of the house, Carol takes a dangerous turn that threatens thirteen-year-old Joaquin’s life. Over and over, child services fails to intervene, and Joaquin is running out of time.

Then Jazz gets a blocked call from someone offering a solution. There are others like her, people the law has failed. They’ve formed an underground network of “helpers,” each agreeing to murder the abuser of another. They’re taking back their power and leaving a trail of bodies throughout Los Angeles—dubbed the Blackbird Killings. If Jazz joins them, they’ll take care of Carol for good.

All she has to do is kill a stranger.

Jazz soon learns there’s more to fear than getting caught carrying out her assignment. The leader of the club has a zero tolerance policy for mistakes.

And the punishment for disobeying orders is death.

Review

Jazz is determined to remove her brother, Joaquin, from their foster mother’s home. Carol refuses to make sure Joaquin gets his much needed insulin. Plus, Carol is abusive in more ways than one. Jazz has had enough! When she receives an untraceable phone with an untraceable text message, Jazz takes a huge risk.

My heart went out to Jazz throughout this whole story. She is one tough lady just struggling through life. She gets kicked around but keeps getting up and fighting back. Then, when the Kill Club contacts her, she struggles with what is the right thing to do. I admired her in more ways than one. Not sure how I would have responded in her situation.

Talk about intense! This story just gets better and better as it moves along. Then…there are these crazy twists and turns which throws the reader for a loop! Just when I thought I knew how this story was going to turn out…it did a complete 180 degree turn! This is a lightening fast read and not to be missed!

Review

When Clint passes away, Caleb is determined to be there for his best friend’s window, Ellie and her daughter, Amelia. Caleb has always had feelings for Ellie but he is holding himself back because of his respect for Clint. When Ellie decides she is ready to move on, there is NO WAY another man is going to win her. He just will NOT stand for it!

Well! Caleb just stole my heart. He is strong and kind! The best type of cowboy there is! When he and Ellie FINALLY get together…it is no holds barred! I fell in love with both of these characters. They both struggle through their grief and with the help of each other, they find their way to true love. It’s not all peaches and cream…there are a few obstacles in the way. But that is just the tantalizing part of the story!

Don’t miss this sweet, tear jerker!

A Wedding in December by Sarah Morgan #review #christmasromance @harlequinbooks

Overview

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Christmas Sisters comes this funny, charming and heartwarming all new original Christmas novel. This is Sarah Morgan at her festive best!

In the snowy perfection of Aspen, the White family gathers for youngest daughter Rosie’s whirlwind Christmas wedding. First to arrive are the bride’s parents, Maggie and Nick. Their daughter’s marriage is a milestone they are determined to celebrate wholeheartedly, but they are hiding a huge secret of their own: they are on the brink of divorce. After living apart for the last six months, the last thing they need is to be trapped together in an irresistibly romantic winter wonderland.

Rosie’s older sister, Katie, is also dreading the wedding. Worried that impulsive, sweet-hearted Rosie is making a mistake, Katie is determined to save her sister from herself! If only the irritatingly good-looking best man, Jordan, would stop interfering with her plans…

Bride-to-be Rosie loves her fiancé but is having serious second thoughts. Except everyone has arrived—how can she tell them she’s not sure? As the big day gets closer, and emotions run even higher, this is one White family Christmas none of them will ever forget!

Review

Rosie is about to be married…but she is having second thoughts…BIG TIME! Katie, her sister, is determined Rosie is making a mistake…and boy is she planning on proving it. Maggie, their mom, is hiding her own big secret.

Sarah Morgan always creates the best characters with the best quips and funny interactions. This book made me laugh out loud in places. Not only is it funny…it is heartfelt and inspiring. And the setting of the beautiful mountains of Colorado is amazing. I felt like I was right there enjoying the scenery.

This is a perfect, fun romance for any season. But, the setting of Christmas and family wedding just puts the perfect spin on a great story.

The Glittering Hour by Iona Grey #review #historicalfiction @stmartinspress @iona_grey

Overview

Selina Lennox is a Bright Young Thing. Her life is a whirl of parties and drinking, pursued by the press and staying on just the right side of scandal, all while running from the life her parents would choose for her.

Lawrence Weston is a penniless painter who stumbles into Selina’s orbit one night and can never let her go even while knowing someone of her stature could never end up with someone of his. Except Selina falls hard for Lawrence, envisioning a life of true happiness. But when tragedy strikes, Selina finds herself choosing what’s safe over what’s right.

Spanning two decades and a seismic shift in British history as World War II approaches, Iona Grey’s The Glittering Hour is an epic novel of passion, heartache and loss.

Review

The Glittering Hour is set in England prior to WWII. The roaring 20’s and 30’s is an exciting time in the lives of many people, especially Selena. She is definitely trying to break the mold her parents expect her to conform to.

Selena is wealthy, young socialite. Her parents have no intention for her to marry, or have anything to do with, Lawrence. Lawerence is a poor, starving artist. These two manage to fall in love and have a pretty good time of it, until a catastrophe happens. You better keep tissues on hand…this story is reeks havoc on all your emotions.

I did find part of this story a little wordy and tedious, especially at the beginning. I wanted it to move faster in places. However, there was just something about these two characters and this time period which kept me reading. And boy! Am I glad I did!

The Wicked Redhead by Beatriz Williams @WmMorrowBooks @authorbeatriz #review #releaseday

Overview

The dazzling narrator of The Wicked City brings her mesmerizing voice and indomitable spirit to another Jazz Age tale of rumrunners, double crosses, and true love, spanning the Eastern seaboard from Florida to Long Island to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

1924. Ginger Kelly wakes up in tranquil Cocoa Beach, Florida, having fled south to safety in the company of disgraced Prohibition agent Oliver Anson Marshall and her newly-orphaned young sister, Patsy. But paradise is short-lived. Marshall is reinstated to the agency with suspicious haste and put to work patrolling for rumrunners on the high seas, from which he promptly disappears. Gin hurries north to rescue him, only to be trapped in an agonizing moral quandary by Marshall’s desperate mother.

1998. Ella Dommerich has finally settled into her new life in Greenwich Village, inside the same apartment where a certain redheaded flapper lived long ago…and continues to make her presence known. Having quit her ethically problematic job at an accounting firm, cut ties with her unfaithful ex-husband, and begun an epic love affair with Hector, her musician neighbor, Ella’s eager to piece together the history of the mysterious Gin Kelly, whose only physical trace is a series of rare vintage photograph cards for which she modeled before she disappeared.

Two women, two generations, two urgent quests. But as Ginger and Ella track down their separate quarries with increasing desperation, the mysteries consuming them take on unsettling echoes of each other, and both women will require all their strength and ingenuity to outwit a conspiracy spanning decades.

Review

Ella has changed her world! She has quit her job, left her husband and has moved into a new apartment. She discovers some unique information about a previous tenant of her new space. This sends her on a quest to find out more.

This novel is broken down into two different time periods, 1924 and 1998. I actually enjoyed the more recent time period better than the past. This is usual for me. I think the mystery element, the apartment and the characters were much better during this part of the story. The rum runners and the prohibition area had a great many characters and seemed a little disjointed.

Beatriz Williams last couple of books have not hit their mark with me. They have just been ok. This one is actually pretty dogone good! It is still a little wordy but I really enjoyed it. Especially the mystery surrounding the apartment. Very unique!

Our Better Angels by Jonathan Reckford @JReckford @MacmillianUSA #review #nonfiction

Overview

Inspiring and insightful, Our Better Angels: Seven Simple Virtues That Will Change Your Life and the World celebrates the shared principles that unite and enable us to overcome life’s challenges together.

“When the waters rise, so do our better angels.”―President Jimmy Carter

Jonathan Reckford, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity, has seen time and again the powerful benefits that arise when people from all walks of life work together to help one another. In this uplifting book, he shares true stories of people involved with Habitat as volunteers and future homeowners who embody seven timeless virtues―kindness, community, empowerment, joy, respect, generosity, and service―and shows how we can all practice these to improve the quality of our own lives as well as those around us.

A Vietnam veteran finds peace where he was once engaged in war. An impoverished single mother offers her family’s time and energy to enrich their neighbors’ lives. A Zambian family of nine living in a makeshift tent makes room to shelter even more. A teenager grieving for his mother honors her love and memory by ensuring other people have a place to call home. A former president of the United States leads by example with a determined work ethic that motivates everyone around him to be the best version of themselves.

These stories, and many others, illustrate how virtues become values, how cooperation becomes connection, and how even the smallest act of compassion can encourage actions that transform the world around us. Here are tales that will make readers laugh and cry and embrace with passion the calling of our better angels to change the way we take care of ourselves, our families, our communities, and the world.

Review

The author of this book is the CEO of Habitat for Humanity. He explores, through powerful stories, seven virtues. These are kindness, community, empowerment, joy, respect, generosity and service. Each of these stories are wonderfully inspiring and encouraging. This really shows how strong everyone is when they come together to help each other.

I am always amazed how great some people truly are. My job makes this difficult to see in the general public. So, this book really moved my soul. As I was reading these truly inspirational tales, I felt refreshed and uplifted! Sometimes you just need something to restore your heart! This one hit the spot!

Brief Excerpt:

She was in her back yard. Birds were singing in the trees, and she was aware of the distant sound of a lawnmower. She knelt in the soil, planting seeds of zucchini, carrots and tomatoes. It was long, dirty work, but she loved it. There was something fulfilling about planting a vegetable garden. Something reassuring about the promise of growing your own food.

She heard the phone in the kitchen ring. Wiping her hands on her jeans (she never used gloves), she ran to get it, wondering absently, when did I plant a garden?

She spoke to Zoe briefly; she’d asked for Jack, who was at work, to plan a joint gift for Martin, and Maggie was little help.

As she hung up, a movement from the window caught her eye. Her hand froze on the wall-mounted handset as she looked at the woman standing on the other side of the bridge.

Some memory from a different time tried to surface, but she was unable to grasp it. What was it? This woman. Where had she seen her before? She finally let go of the phone and walked to the window. The woman was looking at her, too.

There was something dripping from her left arm. And she held something in her right hand. What was that?

Maggie stepped outside onto a thin blanket of snow. Hadn’t it just been warm? When did it snow?

The woman waved at her then. Waved with the hand that held something. Maggie moved closer, smiling and waving back.

“Hello! Did you come from the trail?” She stopped.

The woman was holding a severed hand.

Maggie’s hands flew to her face, and she covered her mouth before she could scream.

The woman smiled and lowered her waving hand – the hand that was holding what must be her other hand because, at this closer proximity, Maggie could see her left hand was indeed missing from its arm, and severed roughly, at that, hence the steady stream of blood flowing into the snow.

Oh my God!” she yelled and ran toward the woman, who quickly held out the severed hand, as if to say, stop.

Maggie skidded in her tracks, her eyes riveted on the woman. She watched as she brought the forefinger of the hand to her lips and said, “Shhhhh. He’ll hear you.” She looked in the direction of the farm.

Dark rivulets of blood flowed from the stump of the hand down her arm, and the blood on the finger smeared over her lips.

Maggie sank to her knees, screaming, and in some trick of perspective, the woman appeared on Maggie’s side of the bridge, again bringing the forefinger of the severed hand to her lips as she shushed her. Her eyes were wide in – what? – fear?

Maggie flew backward at the shock of the woman’s sudden closeness, and just as suddenly she was standing above her, smiling down at her, her mouth impossibly wide, stretching her face grotesquely. “There was so much blood,” the woman said, her mouth widening into a gaping, black hole in her face as her jaw stretched to her chest and the word “blood” seemed to go on forever. Maggie felt certain she’d be engulfed by it and live in this terror forever.
