The Final Deception by Heather Graham @harlequinbooks #review #suspense

Overview

THE FINAL DECEPTION

Witness the thrilling conclusion to the beloved New York Confidential series, in THE FINAL DECEPTION (MIRA Books; March 31, 2020; $26.99). Kieran and Craig are about to take on their most chilling case yet as they hunt for a deranged serial killer who has escaped from prison to satisfy his need to kill again.
When criminal psychologist Kieran Finnegan was released from her responsibility of counseling the brutal serial killer known as The Fireman, once he was incarcerated, she was relieved to escape the tendrils of his twisted inner world. The chill she received from her sessions with him has stayed with her despite trying to leave him in the past. However, some demons refuse to remain behind bars. When her FBI agent boyfriend Craig is called to a gruesome crime scene that matches The Fireman’s MO, news begins to spread that he’s escaped from prison.

Review

Kieran, a criminal psychologist, has been called to interview The Fireman. The Fireman is a serial killer. He hears voices telling him which person to kill and why. She just can’t shake the feeling there is more going on behind these voices.

Kieran is smart and I enjoy that in a character. She has good instincts and knows when to follow them. Craig, her FBI Special Agent boyfriend, is a perfect match for her. They really work well together and make a great team.

I have enjoyed Heather Graham’s books for years! She is an author which creates a great escape. There is danger, suspense, mystery and little bit of love scattered throughout her stories! You cannot go wrong with any of that! And this tale is full of suspense and creepiness. Plus, there is a cute, little dog!

This is the final novel in the New York Confidential series. I have not read any of the previous novels. (I will have to remedy that soon!) This is a stand alone tale. There are a few previous cases alluded to but it did not affect this story at all. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your copy today!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni @wmmorrowbooks @danitrussoni #fiction #review

Overview

From the New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author of the Angelology series comes a bewitching gothic novel of suspense that plunges readers into a world of dark family secrets, the mysteries of human genetics, and the burden of family inheritance.

It feels like a fairy tale when Alberta ”Bert” Monte receives a letter addressed to “Countess Alberta Montebianco” at her Hudson Valley, New York, home that claims she’s inherited a noble title, money, and a castle in Italy. While Bert is more than a little skeptical, the mystery of her aristocratic family’s past, and the chance to escape her stressful life for a luxury holiday in Italy, is too good to pass up.

At first, her inheritance seems like a dream come true: a champagne-drenched trip on a private jet to Turin, Italy; lawyers with lists of artwork and jewels bequeathed to Bert; a helicopter ride to an ancestral castle nestled in the Italian Alps below Mont Blanc; a portrait gallery of ancestors Bert never knew existed; and a cellar of expensive vintage wine for Bert to drink.

But her ancestry has a dark side, and Bert soon learns that her family history is particularly complicated. As Bert begins to unravel the Montebianco secrets, she begins to realize her true inheritance lies not in a legacy of ancestral treasures, but in her very genes.

Review

Bert receives a strange letter. This letter is informing her she is a countess and has a huge inheritance coming her way. She is hesitant, as most people would be, but it is intriguing. So intriguing that she gets onto a private jet with a lawyer she just met. This opens up a life she never dreamed of…then it all starts to unravel.

Wow…what a creepy, unusual read. This story takes you to a secluded area in Turin, Italy. And the secrets just keep unfolding. From Bert’s ancestors to the large, menacing castle, this novel is a wild ride indeed!

Now this story did take a weird turn toward the end of the book. But, that just melded the story together.

I loved this author’s first book Angelology. This story did not have quite the historical background as her first novel did. But, it is right up there as far as a fantastic read goes.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

Behind Every Lie by Christina McDonald @gallerybooks @christinamac79 #review #suspense

Overview

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of The Night Olivia Fell—an “emotionally charged mystery” (Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author)comes a thrilling new suspense novel about the insidious nature of family secrets…and their deadly potential.

If you can’t remember it, how do you prove you didn’t do it?

Eva Hansen wakes in the hospital after being struck by lightning and discovers her mother, Kat, has been murdered. Eva was found unconscious down the street. She can’t remember what happened but the police are highly suspicious of her.

Determined to clear her name, Eva heads from Seattle to London—Kat’s former home—for answers. But as she unravels her mother’s carefully held secrets, Eva soon realizes that someone doesn’t want her to know the truth. And with violent memories beginning to emerge, Eva doesn’t know who to trust. Least of all herself.

Told in alternating perspectives from Eva’s search for answers and Kat’s mysterious past, Christina McDonald has crafted another “complex, emotionally intense” (Publishers Weekly) domestic thriller. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell’s I Found You and Karin Slaughter’s Pieces of Her, Behind Every Lie explores the complicated nature of mother-daughter relationships, family trauma, and the danger behind long-held secrets.

Review

Eva is going to find out who murdered her mother. The crazy thing is…she thinks it could be her. Her memories were damaged when she was struck by lightening. She has flashes of images from the night her mother was murdered. But, these flashes are so convoluted that they are no help at all.

This novel is told by two different narrators, Eva and Kat. Kat is Eva’s mom. Kat has had a unique life and Eva has been kept completely in the dark. She thought she knew her mother, but the more she investigates, the more she finds out…She did not know her mother at all.

I love the intensity in this story. The author just keeps building and building and then adds in a few twists. You have no idea how this is going to end up.

This is a fast paced, unique story. It leaves you guessing all the way through. I loved The Night Olivia Fell and this novel is right up there with it.

The Woman in the Mirror by Rebecca James @minotaurBooks #review #fiction

Overview

For more than two centuries, Winterbourne Hall has stood atop a bluff overseeing the English countryside of Cornwall and the sea beyond.

In 1947, Londoner Alice Miller accepts a post as governess at Winterbourne, looking after Captain Jonathan de Grey’s twin children. Falling under the de Greys’ spell, Alice believes the family will heal her own past sorrows. But then the twins’ adoration becomes deceitful and taunting. Their father, ever distant, turns spiteful and cruel. The manor itself seems to lash out. Alice finds her surroundings subtly altered, her air slightly chilled. Something malicious resents her presence, something clouding her senses and threatening her very sanity.

In present day New York, art gallery curator Rachel Wright has learned she is a descendant of the de Greys and heir to Winterbourne. Adopted as an infant, she never knew her birth parents or her lineage. At long last, Rachel will find answers to questions about her identity that have haunted her entire life. But what she finds in Cornwall is a devastating tragic legacy that has afflicted generations of de Greys. A legacy borne from greed and deceit, twisted by madness, and suffused with unrequited love and unequivocal rage.

Review

Rachel was adopted at birth and never knew her legacy. She is determined to find out where she came from…may not turn out the way she expects. After several leads direct her to a weird house in Cornwall, she finds strange information about her family. It is ripe with selfishness, dishonesty and derangement. She is determined to find out more and to settle her curiosity once and for all.

Well! This was a nice change of pace for me. It is not the best written book but I enjoyed it all the same. Yes, I knew what was coming next. There are really no surprises. But, I loved the setting of the old house and with all the weirdness surrounding it! It really had a gothic mystery feel. And Rachel showed intelligence and diligence. The mystery surrounding her and the house is gripping and has just enough strangeness to keep you glued to the pages.

March Escapes and Escapades #wrapup #marchreads

Has this not been the craziest month ever. I am essential personnel and the longer I have worked, the more scared I am. My county is considered a “hot spot” in the state of Mississippi. We have more coronavirus cases per capita than just about any county in our state. And it just keeps growing. STAY HOME PEOPLE!

Here are some of my escapades for March.

Before all this came about, thanks to some sweet friends, we went to one of the Ole Miss Baseball games. My husband and I are huge baseball fans. We are just not huge college baseball fans. But, I can honestly say..I had a blast that day and it will most likely be the only baseball game I attend this year…OMG!

If you know anything about Ole Miss…they are a party school. So why not have a solo cup race. Three of these pictures are of the Solo cup race…that is so funny to watch.

And of course if you visit Oxford, MS, you MUST visit Square Books. There is not a better book store in the south!

Now on to my Escapes. I will say, I had a good bit of trouble focusing this month. I am sure many of you have had the same issue. Well, anyway…here we go.

My Audible Reads for March #audible #audiobooks #audioreads

Wow! March has been the longest month EVER! I had just an ok month for audible reads.

Here are my audible reads for March

The Silent Girls

This is very good and suspenseful. Kept me guessing most of the way through.

The End of the Affair

This story did not hold my interest at all. I abandoned it about 45 minutes into it. But, I might give it another shot at a later date.

Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker

Now this one…this one is super good. It has been quite a while since I have had a Civil War book. This one is well researched, well written and well narrated.

Now tell me about your March audible books! Inquiring minds want to know!

Code Name Hélène by Ariel Lawhon #review #historicalfiction @doubledaybooks @ariellawhon

Overview

Told in interweaving timelines organized around the four code names Nancy used during the war, Code Name Hélène is a spellbinding and moving story of enduring love, remarkable sacrifice and unfaltering resolve that chronicles the true exploits of a woman who deserves to be a household name.
It is 1936 and Nancy Wake is an intrepid Australian expat living in Paris who has bluffed her way into a reporting job for Hearst newspaper when she meets the wealthy French industrialist Henri Fiocca. No sooner does Henri sweep Nancy off her feet and convince her to become Mrs. Fiocca than the Germans invade France and she takes yet another name: a code name.
As LUCIENNE CARLIER Nancy smuggles people and documents across the border and earns a new nickname from the Gestapo for her remarkable ability to evade capture: THE WHITE MOUSE. With a five million franc bounty on her head, Nancy is forced to escape France and leave Henri behind. When she enters training with the Special Operations Executives in Britain, she is told to use the name HÉLÈNE with her comrades. And finally, with mission in hand, Nancy is airdropped back into France as the deadly MADAM ANDRÉE, where she claims her place as one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance, known for her ferocious wit, her signature red lipstick, and her ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied Forces. But no one can protect Nancy if the enemy finds out these four women are one and the same, and the closer to liberation France gets, the more exposed she–and the people she loves–will become.

Review

Hélène is a reporter at the early part of the war. She meets and marries Henri, the love of her life. He is sent to protect the Maginot line. While he is gone, she drives and ambulance and ends up, in a convoluted way, with the resistance. She helped change the history of WWII. And because of all her undercover activities, she saved a multitude of lives.

When this story began, I was in awe of Hélène. And I pretty much stayed that way through the whole book. This woman was a powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with. However, the story is a little muddled, especially in the middle. But, boy am I glad I read it. I learned so much! What an amazing lady and and an amazing story of her life.

Not when she’s this close to ending it once and for all. Review

Rowan is still struggling to uncover all the secrets about her family. The more she finds out the more entangled the mystery becomes.

Rowan is a great character. She and Billy are fantastic together. I love how this author is very subtle with the love stuff. She always has great lead characters which depend on each other through thick and thin.

This story will keep you on the edge of your seat. This author just keeps putting out fantastic reads. She has the best characters and some of the best plots out there. From the first word till the very end…you will be captivated.

Do not miss this book…heck do not miss the whole series! And I would read them in order. Each book picks up where the last one ended.

A Conspiracy of Bones by Kathy Reichs #review #fiction #mystery @scribnerbooks

Overview

It’s sweltering in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Temperance Brennan, still recovering from neurosurgery following an aneurysm, is battling nightmares, migraines, and what she thinks might be hallucinations when she receives a series of mysterious text messages, each containing a new picture of a corpse that is missing its face and hands. Immediately, she’s anxious to know who the dead man is, and why the images were sent to her.

An identified corpse soon turns up, only partly answering her questions.

To win answers to the others, including the man’s identity, she must go rogue, working mostly outside the system. That’s because Tempe’s new boss holds a fierce grudge against her and is determined to keep her out of the case. Tempe bulls forward anyway, even as she begins questioning her instincts. But the clues she discovers are disturbing and confusing. Was the faceless man a spy? A trafficker? A target for assassination by the government? And why was he carrying the name of a child missing for almost a decade?

With help from a number of law enforcement associates including her Montreal beau Andrew Ryan and the always-ready-with-a-smart-quip, ex-homicide investigator Skinny Slidell, and utilizing new cutting-edge forensic methods, Tempe draws closer to the astonishing truth.

But the more she uncovers, the darker and more twisted the picture becomes…

Review

Tempe is on the outs with her new boss. When she receives some strange text messages about an unidentifiable corpse. She oversteps in more ways than one.

It has been quite a while since I have read a book by this author. Years ago she was a favorite. But, as the years have passed other authors have worked their way in. So, I took advantage when this came up for me.

I will be honest, this was just a so-so read for me. I did not feel like the story really went anywhere. It was a slow start and just never really grabbed me. Plus, I hated Tempe’s boss! You will have to read this to discover what that witch…ugh..excuse me…woman was up to. But, I still found it intriguing in places. Especially the mystery around the child’s disappearance and the unidentifiable body. I did wonder how Tempe was going to link all the clues together. It is a fast moving, quick read. I just think there are other books by Kathy Reichs which are much more captivating.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

The Honey-Don’t List by Christina Lauren @gallerybooks #review #fiction

Overview

From the New York Times bestselling author behind the “joyful, warm, touching” (Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author) The Unhoneymooners comes a delightfully charming love story about what happens when two assistants tasked with keeping a rocky relationship from explosion start to feel sparks of their own.

Carey Douglas has worked for home remodeling and design gurus Melissa and Rusty Tripp for nearly a decade. A country girl at heart, Carey started in their first store at sixteen, and—more than anyone would suspect—has helped them build an empire. With a new show and a book about to launch, the Tripps are on the verge of superstardom. There’s only one problem: America’s favorite couple can’t stand each other.

James McCann, MIT graduate and engineering genius, was originally hired as a structural engineer, but the job isn’t all he thought it’d be. The last straw? Both he and Carey must go on book tour with the Tripps and keep the wheels from falling off the proverbial bus.

Unfortunately, neither of them is in any position to quit. Carey needs health insurance, and James has been promised the role of a lifetime if he can just keep the couple on track for a few more weeks. While road-tripping with the Tripps up the West Coast, Carey and James vow to work together to keep their bosses’ secrets hidden, and their own jobs secure. But if they stop playing along—and start playing for keeps—they may have the chance to build something beautiful together…

From the “hilariously zany and heartfelt” (Booklist) Christina Lauren comes a romantic comedy that proves if it’s broke, you might as well fix it.

Review

Carey is working as an assistant to Melissa Tripp. James is an assistant to Rusty Tripp. Melissa and Rusty are a powerful tv remodeling duo. These two have secrets and are slowly falling apart. Carey and James have their work cut out for them!

I am a huge fan of this writing duo. However, this book is not my favorite. I think it is because I am not a fan of Melissa and Rusty Tripp. Melissa is a total “B” word and she mistreats everyone. Rusty is just there. He is a womanizer and a big ole flirt. But, he kind of felt like a minor character till the end.

I also did not feel connected to Carey until about the middle of the book. That being said…it is still a pretty good read… just not their usual caliber of work…IN MY OPINION.

This is a fast paced, cute story. It just fell short for me. But, you may want to give it a shot! It is entertaining and enjoyable.
