Author Q&A

I Grew With You

By Sarah Molitor

What inspired you to write a book for children about the experience of pregnancy and childbirth?

The day I found out I was pregnant was also the day I had a meeting with the publisher to pitch ideas for my very first children’s book. I remember thinking to myself, “How cool would it be to write a book for children and mothers about the journey of pregnancy and how a baby grows?” And instantly the words I Grew With You came to mind. So it was truly inspired by finding out I was pregnant with our sixth child.

I also knew I wanted it to be a sweet story that a mother could read to her child that would be endearing to both of them. I know my boys are so excited to watch my tummy grow and this book was a way to let them in on all the ways a mommy and baby inside her grows as they anticipate the birth of the child.

Why did you decide to show the entire journey from conception to birth, instead of focusing on one aspect?

It’s so important to me that I acknowledge that life begins at conception. From the very beginning, your child was created specifically for you. And as each mother finds out that she is pregnant, the anticipation builds from those early moments no matter how long you carry your child. I believe the whole process of pregnancy all the way to delivery is important for seeing the miracle of life versus just focusing on one specific moment.

I also believe it brings out the joy (and often humor) from the moments and changes that each month brings throughout pregnancy. People love to see something from start to finish and I Grew With You allows for that!

The book also highlights a diverse group of women. Why was that an important focus for you as well?

As I was imagining this book, I was also imagining all the different mothers that could be touched by reading it to their little ones. Or just having it as their own keepsake. And I’m keenly aware that no two mothers are alike whether in look or personality or how they carry their child (and so much more). So diversity in the book was a very important thing for me to highlight. I want children to know how each mother is beautifully different during pregnancy. And I also want them to turn the page and suddenly say “hey, that mommy looks like you!” which allows for a depth of connection to the book and the story. In this book you will see nine different mothers which speaks to the diversity of motherhood and all women!

As mothers read this book to their children, how do you think it will encourage them?

I’m imagining the moments when mother’s first read this to their children and how special it will be. I believe it will encourage the mother in how incredible she is for the pregnancy(s) she has experienced and all the highs and not so highs she may have experienced. I believe she will feel more empowered and proud of being a part of the miracle of bringing life into the world. And I also believe it will create a unique bond between the mother and her child(ren) because they will get a glimpse into what mommy (and daddy) went through to bring them into the world. Overall I Grew With You gives a unique, special, humorous and beautiful view into the beginning of motherhood and this ultimately fosters a deeper connection between mother and child.

How could this book change someone’s opinion about pregnancy and childbirth?

First of all, I believe it will show the beauty of how life begins at conception and how much that child, from the very beginning, means to a mother. The excitement, the anticipation, the sharing in the news- all of it. But I also believe it will challenge people in their views of pregnancy and childbirth. If you have given birth, you know all the aches and pains and stretching and growing that happens. It’s not all glowing skin and easy peasy. This book gives a simple and sweet look into how the process of pregnancy changes the mother physically and emotionally just as much as the baby inside her grows and develops as well.

What advice do you have for parents as they start having discussions with their children about pregnancy, childbirth, starting a family, etc.?

I love having age-appropriate conversations about these topics with my children as well as an open line of communication that they can ask us whatever questions they will have and we will always give them an honest answer. My advice would be to always communicate in whatever way feels most comfortable for your family and allow children to be involved in knowing the process and how they are a unique part of that too.

This answer may look different at different stages but it’s so important that we include them in the process. When they are included, it allows them to feel a part of everything that is going on whether that’s announcing the pregnancy to family and friends or learning how the baby grows inside the mother each month and all the new developments that happen. And this gives children their own special bond with mommy and the new baby to be. The more children are involved, the more involved they want to be which is exciting for them and ultimately builds up the family unit in the best way.

Your publisher, Good & True, produces very family-friendly, faith-based content for children. Why was it important to you to partner with a publisher like that?

It is so important to me that we build a foundation for our children that’s filled with value! Value for the children and value for the parents as well. I always want to know that whatever I’m hearing, watching, seeing or reading is safe for the whole family and never brings up unexpected discomfort.

Good and True is committed to these same values and I wanted my book to align with a publisher who would prioritize this. I’m so thankful they do and it’s been evident through the whole process. Consumers will always know that content coming from Good and True is content they can trust for their families, their homes and whoever they share it with.

Ultimately, what do you hope parents and children take away from I Grew With You?

My ultimate hope is that families will read I Grew With You and walk away feeling a greater sense of family and love for each other. Also that parents and specifically mothers will feel a greater sense of pride in their families and the beauty of who each of them uniquely are. I hope this book will touch mothers of all ages and stages in a powerful way allowing them to remember the journey of pregnancy and all that they accomplished to have the family they do now. And that everyone would value the beauty and frailty of life and how much power and love one life can hold within them.

What other projects are you working on?

There are a couple things I am working on actually. First off, I am working on a second children’s book with Good and True. YAY! This one will be vastly different from I Grew With You. It will be a very playful, bright and colorful book filled with animals! And will talk about how important each person is to the world and how important it is to share our joy with others. I know it will be such a fun book for parents and children alike.

I am also working on a potential proposal for my first adult book. It’s still in the rough stages but my hope is that it will be an encouragement to women everywhere. I’m excited for both of these projects and looking forward to seeing them come to fruition.

Where can readers purchase a copy of I Grew With You?

Pre-orders are set to launch on Wednesday, July 14 (which we are VERY excited about). I Grew With You will be available to pre-order at goodandtruemedia.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christianbook.com and anywhere books are sold. I Grew With You is set to officially release on October 26.

Oh William! by Elizabeth Strout @randomhouse @lizstrout #5star #bookreview #fiction

Overview

Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout explores the mysteries of marriage and the secrets we keep, as a former couple reckons with where they’ve come from—and what they’ve left behind.

“Elizabeth Strout is one of my very favorite writers, so the fact that Oh William!may well be my favorite of her books is a mathematical equation for joy. The depth, complexity, and love contained in these pages is a miraculous achievement.”—Ann Patchett, author of The Dutch House

I would like to say a few things about my first husband, William.

Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are.

So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us. What happens next is nothing less than another example of what Hilary Mantel has called Elizabeth Strout’s “perfect attunement to the human condition.” There are fears and insecurities, simple joys and acts of tenderness, and revelations about affairs and other spouses, parents and their children. On every page of this exquisite novel we learn more about the quiet forces that hold us together—even after we’ve grown apart.

At the heart of this story is the indomitable voice of Lucy Barton, who offers a profound, lasting reflection on the very nature of existence. “This is the way of life,” Lucy says: “the many things we do not know until it is too late.”

Review

William is on a quest to find his long lost sister. He had no idea she existed and now he is determined to find her. William is a character we all know. He is a father, an unfaithful husband and a son who has been lied to. How he has handled all of this has not been great. He is human and he has made some mistakes. When he brings his ex wife, Lucy, along with him to Maine, it opens ups some old wounds along with some new ones!

William is someone in which half the time I want to hug and protect and the other half I want to pinch and say “watch your mouth!” Then there is Lucy. She has made mistakes in her life and she is learning to live with her decisions. Even though they have been divorced for quite a while and are now friends, these two still have lots of baggage.

No one does dysfunction like Elizabeth Strout. She takes the reader on a tour of therapy. She makes you, as a reader, examine your own life. Sometimes you are the victim and sometimes you are the aggressor. The first time I read a novel by this author, I was not a fan! However, I saved that novel and some of the underlined passages. And I have always come back for more! So, there is something about this author which makes such a huge impression. And this novel about William is one that opens your eyes to many issues between husbands, wives, children and mothers.

Once Upon A Wardrobe by Patti Callahan @harpermusebooks @pcalhenry #5starread #bookreview #fiction

Overview

Indie Next Selection | Buzz Books Selection | POPSUGAR “Best New Books of October” | CountryLiving “Best New Books for This Fall” | Atlanta Journal-Constitution “10 Must Read Southern Books This Fall” | Booklist Queen “Most Anticipated”

From Patti Callahan, the bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis, comes another enchanting story that pulls back the curtain on the early life of C. S. Lewis.

“Where did Narnia come from?”

The answer will change everything.

Megs Devonshire is brilliant with numbers and equations, on a scholarship at Oxford, and dreams of solving the greatest mysteries of physics.

She prefers the dependability of facts—except for one: the younger brother she loves with all her heart doesn’t have long to live. When George becomes captivated by a brand-new book called The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and begs her to find out where Narnia came from, there’s no way she can refuse.

Despite her timidity about approaching the famous author, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with the Oxford don and his own brother, imploring them for answers. What she receives instead are more stories . . . stories of Jack Lewis’s life, which she takes home to George.

Why won’t Mr. Lewis just tell her plainly what George wants to know? The answer will reveal to Meg many truths that science and math cannot, and the gift she thought she was giving to her brother—the story behind Narnia—turns out to be his gift to her, instead: hope.

Review

Meg is a student of mathematics at Oxford. When her terminally ill brother, George, asks her to read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to him, it changes her perspective. George sends her on a quest to find out about Narnia. Meg ends up visiting C.S. Lewis or Jack, as he is called, at his home. This opens up a whole new world for Meg and George.

I have never been a huge fan of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.. GASP! But, I loved this book! It is truly magical and so well written! I enjoyed reading about Jack’s life and family! It adds a whole new perspective to a writer’s process. Add in George and his illness, and you have a fabulous tale you will not soon forget!

Need a book that will take you an an imaginary ride and possibly bring tears to your eyes…THIS IS IT!

After Happily Ever After by Leslie A. Rasmussen @suzyapbooktours @leslierauthor #bookreview #fiction

Finalist in the 2021 Book Excellence Awards for the category of Marriage.

2021 award winner for the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

Release Date: April 6, 2021

About The Book:

Maggie Dolin is forty-five and isn’t dealing with getting older very well. Seventeen years ago, she gave up her job in publishing to raise her daughter, Gia—but now her only child is about to leave for college, and Maggie isn’t sure what her new purpose will be. She’s been the caretaker and nurturer for so long that she can’t even remember the last time someone took care of her. She wishes Jim, her husband of nineteen years, would take that role on—but he’s been distracted and disconnected, and she’s convinced he’s hiding something from her. Her self-involved, judgmental mother and resentful brother, meanwhile, are certainly no help, and her father—the only person in her life who’s always been there for her and asked nothing in return—is dealing with increasingly serious health issues, leaving Maggie without her rock.

As all these stressors pile on, a chance meeting with a younger man causes Maggie to act in a way that is completely out of character for her. As she gets deeper in, she’s forced to make some big decisions about what she wants and deserves—decisions that could change her life forever.

After Happily Ever After deals with love, marriage, family, the empty nest, aging parents and what happens when they all come crashing down at the same time.

Review

Maggie’s life is changing. She is not sure where she goes from here. She gave up her job in publishing years ago to take care of her daughter, Gia. Well, Gia is flying the coop. This leaves Maggie with nothing to hold on to. Her husband is distant, her father is in a difficult stage of Alzheimers and Maggie needs a focus. And it SHOULD NOT be what she focuses on…you have to read this to find out!

Maggie is a character which struck a chord with me. It may not have been a good chord…half the time I wanted to jerk her bald headed (especially over the hot guy!). And the other half, I wanted to hug her and tell her it was going to be ok. Maggie definitely created some huge feelings in me!

This is a tale most women can relate to at one point or another. The aging parents, the life we thought we would have, the children…it is all in this novel. I laughed in places, I probably should not have laughed! And I definitely felt like crying in others. I enjoy a good emotionally creative novel!

From award-winning author Tara Laskowski, The Mother Next Door is an atmospheric novel of domestic suspense in which the strive for perfection ends in murder…

Review

The Ivy Five is a group of neighborhood women who throw a huge Halloween bash every year. It is the block party to end all block parties. But this year is a bit different. These women start to receive threatening messages. Their secrets are about to be revealed. Will they survive what others do not know?!

I have never been a huge fan of novels about friends. I don’t know why…just not my thing. However, this novel may have changed all that! Talk about twisted and full of secrets. I thought I had it figured out…then it twisted again. Now, it does have quite a few characters. But the author did a great job with their individuality. This helped me to keep up with who is who and who did what!

The intensity just keeps building the more you read. Not only that…the questions just keep mounting. I swear…everyone has a secret they are hiding!

Need a good, twisted novel about friends…this is it! Grab your copy today!

The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke @berkleypub #bookreview #fiction

Overview

Two sisters go missing on a remote Scottish island. Twenty years later, one is found–but she’s still the same age as when she disappeared. The secrets of witches have reached across the centuries in this chilling Gothic thriller from the author of the acclaimed The Nesting.

When single mother Liv is commissioned to paint a mural in a 100-year-old lighthouse on a remote Scottish island, it’s an opportunity to start over with her three daughters–Luna, Sapphire, and Clover. When two of her daughters go missing, she’s frantic. She learns that the cave beneath the lighthouse was once a prison for women accused of witchcraft. The locals warn her about wildlings, supernatural beings who mimic human children, created by witches for revenge. Liv is told wildlings are dangerous and must be killed.

Twenty-two years later, Luna has been searching for her missing sisters and mother. When she receives a call about her youngest sister, Clover, she’s initially ecstatic. Clover is the sister she remembers–except she’s still seven years old, the age she was when she vanished. Luna is worried Clover is a wildling. Luna has few memories of her time on the island, but she’ll have to return to find the truth of what happened to her family. But she doesn’t realize just how much the truth will change her.

Review

Liv has been commissioned to paint a mural inside an old lighthouse in Scotland. While she is there, she discovers the strange history surrounding the island and the lighthouse. The lighthouse was once a prison for witches.

Liv is a character which broke my heart with her struggles. She is trying to raise three daughters with very little money and no family to speak of. So when this opportunity arose…Liv jumped on it. And this job changes all of their lives!

This story is a little weird in places…or rather…not my usual genre. I love to read about witches but there are a few things in this tale that are just “out there”. However, there is a lot of history in the novel. That kept me reading and enjoying. Add in the creepy lighthouse on an island in Scotland and I was hooked!

Three Sisters by Heather Morris @stmartinspress @macmillanaudio #historicalfiction #5starread

Overview

This program includes exclusive archival audio.

From Heather Morris, the New York Timesbest-selling author of the multimillion-copy best seller The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka’s Journey: a story of family, courage, and resilience, inspired by a true story.

Against all odds, three Slovakian sisters have survived years of imprisonment in the most notorious death camp in Nazi Germany: Auschwitz. Livia, Magda, and Cibi have clung together, nearly died from starvation and overwork, and the brutal whims of the guards in this place of horror. But now, the allies are closing in and the sisters have one last hurdle to face: the death march from Auschwitz, as the Nazis try to erase any evidence of the prisoners held there. Due to a last minute stroke of luck, the three of them are able to escape formation and hide in the woods for days before being rescued.

And this is where the story begins. From there, the three sisters travel to Israel, to their new home, but the battle for freedom takes on new forms. Livia, Magda, and Cibi must face the ghosts of their past – and some secrets that they have kept from each other – to find true peace and happiness.

Inspired by a true story, and with events that overlap with those of Lale, Gita, and Cilka, The Three Sisters will hold a place in listeners’ hearts and minds as they experience what true courage really is.

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Review

Before their father passed away, he made his three daughters make a promise. Livia, Magda, and Cibi must do everything in their power to stay together. They each take this promise, and they do stay together, for the most part. Then WWII happens and the three are separated. Two are able to stay together in a concentration camp. But the third is saved from their fate because of a Christian doctor. However, after a few years, they all three end up together in Auschwitz. The horrors they have seen and experienced live with them throughout the years to come.

This story is heart wrenching in so many places. How these three survived is an amazing tale. They survived because of kindness of others or just by chance and sheer luck. And their tale does not stop after Auschwitz. They continue to live not far from each other and share in their trials and tribulations.

Heather Morris has done it again. I am amazed at the research which went into this novel. And the narrator, Finty Williams did an excellent job, perfect inflection and voices. She really brought the story to life!

Eight Perfect Hours by Lia Louis @atriabooks #romance #fiction #bookreview

Overview

I read Eight Perfect Hours in one sitting, in four perfect hours, because I couldn’t bear to put it down without knowing the ending. Lia Louis has become a must-buy author for me.” —Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author

In this romantic and heartwarming novel, two strangers meet in chance circumstances during a blizzard and spend one perfect evening together, thinking they’ll never see each other again. But fate seems to have different plans. From the acclaimed author of the “swoon-worthy…rom-com” (The Washington PostDear Emmie Blue.

On a snowy evening in March, thirty-something Noelle Butterby is on her way back from an event at her old college when disaster strikes. With a blizzard closing off roads, she finds herself stranded, alone in her car, without food, drink, or a working charger for her phone.

All seems lost until Sam Attwood, a handsome American stranger also trapped in a nearby car, knocks on her window and offers assistance. What follows is eight perfect hours together, until morning arrives and the roads finally clear. The two strangers part, positive they’ll never see each other again but fate, it seems, has a different plan. As the two keep serendipitously bumping into one another, they begin to realize that perhaps there truly is no such thing as coincidence.

With plenty of charming twists and turns and Lia Louis’s “bold, standout voice” (Gillian McAllister, author of The Good Sister), Eight Perfect Hours is a gorgeously crafted novel that will make you believe in the power of fate.

Review

Noelle is stranded on the highway. Her phone is dead and her mother is alone. She is completely stressing! Until a handsome American, Sam, knocks on her window to check on her. This leads to 8 hours together…stuck…these are the best 8 hours of Noelle’s sad life. When Sam and Noelle part the next morning, they know they will never see each other again. But, fate has a way of intervening.

Noelle is a person who tries to be the best for everyone. She is the full time caretaker of her mother and it is completely derailing her life. She is giving up so much to be everything to everyone.

Sam is an adventurer. He is strong and smart. As these two slowly realize they are meant to be together, it brings out their strengths. Especially Noelle!

This looks like a Christmas romance, but it is not. It is winter tale about two random people who keep randomly running into each other! It is adorable and perfect for a cold winter night! I laughed out loud in several places…especially with Noelle’s brother. You need to read this to find out!

Need a sweet romance with fabulous characters…this is it! Grab your copy today!

Overview

Wicked and smart. Everything you want in a great thriller.”
-Adrian McKinty, New York Times bestselling author of The Chain

One secret.
Eight cryptic words.
Lifetimes of ruin.

From New York Times and Internationally bestselling author

Wayland Maynard is just eight years old when he sees his father kill himself, finds a note that reads I am not who you think I am, and is left reeling with grief and shock. Who was his father if not the loving man Wayland knew? Terrified, Wayland keeps the note a secret, but his reasons for being afraid are just beginning.

Eight years later, Wayland makes a shocking discovery and becomes certain the note is the key to unlocking a past his mother and others in his town want to keep buried.

With the help of two friends, Wayland searches for the truth. Together they uncover strange messages scribbled in his father’s old books, a sinister history behind the town’s most powerful family, and a bizarre tragedy possibly linked to Wayland’s birth. Each revelation raises more questions and deepens Wayland’s suspicions of everyone around him. Soon, he’ll regret he ever found the note, trusted his friends, or believed in such a thing as the truth.

I Am Not Who You Think I Am is an ingenious, addictive, and shattering tale of grief, obsession, and fate as eight words lead to lifetimes of ruin.

Review

Wayland has just discovered that his dad might not be dead. But! How can this be! His father shot himself in front of Wayland when Wayland was just 8 years old. This sets him on a course of disaster and despair.

Wayland is a character which tore out my heart. There were times I wanted to reach out and hug him. Then there were times I wanted to pinch his head off. His life is a struggle and there are definitely ways in which he makes it worse.

This is a story you will not soon forget. I have read a couple of Eric Rickstad novels. And they have all been 5 star reads. He hit it out of the park with this one. This is unique, captivating and the intensity it over the top! And the narrator, Steven Weber is fantastic. His portrayal of Wayland could not have been better.

Review

Wren has a date tonight. She is not a big dater. But, the guy on the Torch app quoted from one of her favorite authors. Adam is not a jock, like you usually see. He looks normal and just right for her. These two become an item…until Wren is ghosted. Then a private detective shows up. He is sure Adam is responsible for some other missing girls.

Wren is a character with a tragic past. Wren changed her name after the tragedy that took her family. She now has created a famous advice column/podcast called Dear Birdie. She also thinks she has her past well hidden. But, she is not as protected as she thought.

Bailey Kirk, the private detective, knows exactly who she is and he knows her past. He is determined to track down Adam. But, things go wrong! Very, very wrong!

This is the best book by this author…hands down! There are so many layers and twists and turns. I swear…I could not stop reading and when I could not read it for…well life…I was thinking about it.

Need a FANTASTIC thriller! RUN…DON’T WALK to get this one!
